Arbor Day Activities and Tree City USA for Westminster

In commemorating Arbor Day, the City of Westminster Tree Commission has undertaken projects to enhance the tree canopy, landscaping, and appearance of downtown Westminster.

Among the many projects is a scheduled installation of three Cherry Trees at Belle Grove Square Thursday April 2, 3:30 pm, where Mayor Tom Ferguson will read an Arbor Day proclamation, declaring Arbor Day and Westminster’s dedication to it. The trees are replacements for other trees that were in poor health and that posed a threat to safety. The remaining trees have been inspected for safety issues as well as pruned, if necessary.

Another three replacement trees will be installed on Willis St. in cooperation with the Parkview condominium association—again due to health issues. Another 11 street trees will be installed on West Main, Pennsylvania Ave, and John St, replacing trees that were previously removed or had died.

Over 120 large shrubs (Bottlebrush Buckeye) were installed along the Wakefield Valley Trail. These plants will eventually provide shade for the trail, provide habitat for wildlife, and reduce the mowing necessary in that area.

The activities are coordinated by the Westminster Tree Commission, a group of local volunteers charged with overseeing the City’s robust urban tree canopy program. Thanks to the efforts of the Tree Commission and the City’s grounds maintenance staff, Westminster achieved Tree City USA (Arbor Day Foundation) designation for the 21st consecutive year in 2008. Only five other municipalities in Maryland have earned this distinction more often than Westminster.

If you have any questions about the event, or if you want to participate on the Tree Commission, please contact Tim Rogers, Natural and Cultural Resources Planner, at 410-848-4628.

WBAL Snow Advisory for Carroll County

March 7th, 2007

Good morning - before you venture outside, be aware that the dreaded winter four letter “S” word is back. Hopefully for its last hoorah of the winter.

The Westminster City Street Department is already at work… true to form. No surprise here. I can only imagine they are getting a little tired of this.

I’m tired of winter. Spring can come anytime now.

_____

Issued at: 4:07 AM EST 3/7/07, expires at: 12:30 PM EST 3/7/07

Snow advisory remains in effect until 7 pm est this evening for northern central and western maryland, the district of columbia northern and northwestern virginia, and much of the eastern west virginia panhandle, A strong clipper weather system moving into the appalachian mountains early this morning will cross the mid atlantic today. Light snow will begin during the early morning hours and will begin to affect the morning commute.

1 to 3 inches of snow is expected today in the advisory area. Snow will end around nightfall.

A snow advisory means that periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow covered roads and limited visibilities, and use caution while driving.

Exulted Ruler elect: Presently Unemployed

Exceptional Secretary elect: Presently Unemployed

May 13th, 2005

MML President Barrie Tilghman
Maryland Municipal League
1212 West Street
Annapolis, MD 21401-3635

Dear Maryland Municipal League President Barrie Tilghman,

Unemployed Berlin Mayor Rex Hailey, Unemployed Forest Heights Mayor Paula Noble and myself would like to take this opportunity to petition the MML for the formulation of a new Maryland Municipal League Department to be so entitled “The Maryland Unemployed Mayor’s Association” (MMLUMA).

The MMLUMA could be of invaluable service to elected and appointed Maryland public officials, although, we would agree to not ever give anyone, any election advice. We anxiously await your decision, please advise.

Meanwhile, as I am sure you are aware, Tom Ferguson was elected Mayor of the City of Westminster on May 9th, 2005. Mayor Ferguson will do a fine job for our community. Please join me in welcoming and wishing Mayor Ferguson, Godspeed and the best of luck. Please take every opportunity to speak with Westminster Mayor Ferguson about the benefits and value of the MML.

It is with deepest regret that I resign my position as Member at Large of the Maryland Municipal League Board of Directors.

I was first elected to Maryland Municipal League’s Board of Directors, Member-at-Large on June 13th, 2000. I have had the honor to serve on the Board of Directors for the past five years.

It has been a great pleasure working with you, the other Board members, MML Executive Director Scott Hancock and the wonderful, capable and competent MML Staff, elected and appointed public officials throughout the State of Maryland.

It has been an enormous joy to have witnessed the MML continue to grow, prosper, and make an invaluable contribution to all the citizens of Maryland, for whom we have the honor to serve.

If the Board should decide to appoint a replacement for my vacated Member at Large seat, I highly recommend Mt. Airy Council President John Medve.

As I look forward to taking some time off to spend with my family and look forward to whatever opportunities await in the future. I will greatly miss working the MML.

Again, it has been my pleasure to work with you and I wish everyone associated with the MML the very best future. Thank you for all your work.

With best regard, I am

Very truly yours,

/s/

Kevin Dayhoff
