Susan Williamson, the visual arts coordinator at the Carroll Arts Center, is the recipient of the 2018 Delta of Maryland Lifelong Learner Award from the Phi Beta Kappa national honor society at McDaniel College.

This award is given to an individual or group from the greater Westminster community who has “pursued intellectual inquiry beyond their professional field or fields, thus demonstrating the liberal arts value of lifelong learning,” according to a news release from the college.

Mitchell K. Alexander, McDaniel College director of Event Services

February 19, 2014

I learned today from my friend on Facebook, Mahlia Joyce that my dear friend Mitch Alexander has passed away from a heart attack… I am so sad and my heart and prayers go out to his family and friends. Mitch was a wonderful friend for many-many years. He was always good for a big hug, a huge smile and a kind word.

Dr. Ethan A. Seidel wrote:

Rest in peace Mitch...

We regret to inform the McDaniel community that Mitchell K. Alexander, director of Event Services, passed away today, Feb. 19, following a heart attack. He earned his bachelor’s degree in History with a minor in Education from WMC in 1980 and worked in Student Affairs as a part-time Decker Center building manager during the evenings and weekends. While an undergraduate here, he was named to Who’s Who Among American College Students and the recipient of the Lynn F. Gruber Leadership Award

After teaching middle school science for a year at Saint Francis Academy in Baltimore, Mitchell returned to the College as assistant director of College Activities. In 1986, he completed his master’s degree in School Administration. He left for a promotion in 1988 and served as director of Student Activities at Post College in Waterbury, Connecticut. He returned 16 months later to WMC as student activities director.

In a 1993 edition of the student newspaper, Mitchell was described as having, “the whole campus in his hands.” His legacy is one of empowering student groups to organize and create successful events for the campus community. More recently, his campus knowledge was invaluable for his expertise and guidance for event staging and set-ups.

He is survived by his wife Mildred Artis Alexander, class of 1981, and their two children, Blake and Paige.

Information regarding funeral services will be shared when available.

Dr. Ethan A. Seidel

It only took about 120 years, but an 1891 graduate of then-Western Maryland College, now McDaniel, recently made a donation to the college.

It was announced at McDaniel College's recent trustee-faculty dinner that about $6.7 million from the estate of 1891 alumnus Philip Henry Dorsey, of St. Clements Bay, will be used to establish an endowment for scholarships, according to information provided by the college.

This is the largest bequest for scholarships in the college's history. In contrast to the college's finances in the 1890s, one can only imagine how Dorsey's classmates would marvel at the size of the donation, especially since the first 25 years of the college were fraught with concern over the school's debt.

Local historian Dr. Jim Lightner said in an interview that Dorsey was one of 18 students to earn a bachelor's degree from the college in 1891. The college's total enrollment at the time was 154, he said.

In an era when communities are increasingly turning to higher taxes and bigger government to provide quality of life services in a community; Carroll County still turns to the large number of volunteers and philanthropic groups in our community — which are supported by donations of time, talent and money, and not tax dollars.

The Rotary is among the stalwart examples of this attitude in Carroll. Kev McClellan writes, “Cancer is a terrible thing, and by raising awareness, we can fight it. I'm running across the country to help raise awareness for cancer for the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults.

“Any donation will help me with my journey. Pennies, Nickels, Dimes, Quarters! So if you see me, my pockets will gladly take your spare change!

“If you can spare some money, you can donate electronically here. Even $5 helps a lot!
