Lance Armstrong and King Sisyphus by Kevin E. Dayhoff http://tinyurl.com/cctpxp2

Lance Armstrong and King Sisyphus by Kevin E. Dayhoff http://tinyurl.com/cctpxp2

August 29, 2012

Last Thursday, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency decided, without a single credible shred of evidence, that since professional cyclist Lance Armstrong did not prove himself to be innocent, he is guilty and could not have been successful in his storied career without the use of drugs.

Before Mr. Armstrong retired from professional cycling in February 2010, he had passed approximately 500 drug tests in his long, celebrated, and distinguished athletic career. It is believed that there has never-ever been a single positive test…

[…]

“There’s something very much of the feel of a witch hunt to this. If Armstrong was doping, then by God take away his awards and give him a medal for being the smartest damn athlete on the planet.”

… we live in an era where the purpose of government is to criminalize the successful. Whether you are successful in business, art, professional sports – or whatever, the basic tenant of government is that you simply must be guilty of something. The purpose of bureaucracy is to prove it.

Whether you are guilty or not is unimportant. For the government, what is critical is that you be accused. That’s all that is necessary. The media will take care of the rest – by suggestion, innuendo, and nefarious association.

Your job is to endeavor to prove that you are innocent. It is a task that makes the myth of Sisyphus look easy.

You remember Sisyphus. There are many interpretations and versions of the story – including my favorite, “The Myth of Sisyphus” by Albert Camus… http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=5314

September 7, 2006 celebration of the 35th anniversary of Junction

September 7, 2006 celebration of the 35th anniversary of Junction

I’ve been a member of the board of Junction since October 2000.  This is a group photo of the staff and board on September 7, 2006, when we celebrated our 35th anniversary.

Junction is a local Westminster Carroll County Maryland private nonprofit agency for substance abuse prevention and outpatient drug treatment.  It provides prevention, intervention, and treatment of substance abuse for individuals, their families, and the community through education, counseling, community collaboration, and leadership in Carroll County.

It was incorporated on September 27, 1971.  A month after incorporation, on December 6, 1971, it opened its doors in the historic Carroll County Jail on Court Street in Westminster.

Hat Tip: Mark Yount.  The staff of Junction on approximately October 16, 1971…  According to Yount, “…  (Junction) opened it's doors for business in 1971, but there were many of us that helped fix it up when the county gave it to the non-profit organization in 1970. I remember being in there then at age 15 scraping and painting walls. Little did I know that I would be working there someday for nearly 25 years. Here is a picture from 1971 of many of the youth who helped make this project work.”

Perhaps it is time to rethink the War on Drugs

Perhaps it is time to rethink the War on Drugs

March 28, 2009

I have slowly but surely evolved in my thinking to the point that I agree that it is time to re-assess our country’s “War on Drugs.”

Above and beyond the fact that is not appropriate to wage war on your own citizens; it is becoming obvious that this is not a problem that can be solved with law enforcement alone.

It has been an extraordinarily expensive war – and it is not working.

At this point, I’m not sure that I go along with legalizing it; perhaps it is time to emphasis treating it as a medical problem.
