How Journalism is Changing in Today's World NOVEMBER 17, 2019

In today's world journalism has become a risky business. Newspapers are closing up shop every day in light of the digital age and in many ways it seems the profession is under attack both figuratively and literally. Reporters are being gunned down in newsrooms and the public is becoming more and more suspicious of the profession as the result of the concept of fake news. Bob Blubaugh is the editor of the Carroll County Times in Maryland and has been in the journalism field first as a sports reporter and now as an editor for over 20 years. He is experiencing these concerns firsthand and yet remains committed to the idea of community journalism and the important role it continues to play in our lives.

The profession of journalism is in a precarious state these days as a result of the concept of "fake news," the influence of social media and the threat to the very existence of print media as a result of the digital age.

Bob Blubaugh, editor of the Carroll County Times in Maryland, recently talked with me for my first episode of The Human Condition with Lisa Gregory. He gives an insider's view of the challenges editors and reporters are facing, including the very real threats and violence inflicted upon on them, as well as talking about his love of community journalism and how important it is now more than ever.

In its recent newsletter, the Society of Professional Journalists
has taken the opportunity to remind us about the Oct. 1, 1910 bombing of the Los Angeles Times building.

The 1910 bombing of the Los Angeles Times has been the

The weapon: 16 sticks of dynamite and a windup alarm clock.

The target: The old Los Angeles Times building, an 1886
brick-and-granite edifice known as "the fortress," on Broadway and
First Street, across the street from where The Times is located today.

The bomber: J.B. McNamara, who was linked to an ironworkers
union that ordered the attack — part of a radical bombing campaign to go after
anti-union strongholds in the early days of the 20th century.

Twenty-one people died in the early hours of Oct. 1, 1910,
when the explosive device ripped an entire wing off The Times building. A night
editor and a telegraph operator were among the dead, and dozens of others were
wounded and maimed. A report published in The Times two days after the incident
described the scene as an "awful pit of death."

Heralded as the "crime of the century," the
bombing has been the subject of books (such as "Deadly
Times" by Lew Irwin) and it has figured in documentaries (Peter Jones'
"Inventing L.A.: The Chandlers and Their Times").

America's greatest rock journalist. Died way too young: December 14, 1948 – April 30, 1982.

Lester Bangs is the folk hero of every freelance writer. In the early 1970s I was inspired to write as much stuff as I could and send it in to as many magazines and newspapers as possible dreaming of getting a break like Mr. Bangs did in 1969.

Alas, all I did was collect an extremely impressive collection of wonderfully worded rejection letters. His writing was awesome and back in the day I tried to read everything he wrote... For years I saved a box of his stuff from Rolling Stone and later, Creem.

His death on April 30, 1982 was a harsh lesson in reality for all of us with a typewriter and a dream. For a classic adventure in reading, try: "Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung: The Work of a Legendary Critic: Rock 'n' Roll as Literature and Literature as Rock 'n' Roll," published posthumously in 1987...

"A hero is a goddamn stupid thing to have," legendary rock critic Lester Bangs said two weeks ago. Actually, it was actor Erik Jensen, impersonating Bangs — his hero. The setting was a rehearsal room at the Kirk Douglas Theatre in the Culver City neighborhood of Los Angeles, where Jensen and director Jessica Blank were working on the one-man play they wrote about Bangs (who died in 1982, at age 33), How to Be a Rock Critic. The past week has been a lesson in journalistic humility for me.

After a career of thinking and writing about how the kind of mainstream journalistic institutions at which I worked set the local and national agenda, I had a moment of clarity with a voice in my head saying, "Not so much any more, my self-important friend."

If you are interested in art movies, see Citizen Kane. If you are interested in screwball comedy, check out His Girl Friday. If it's history you're after, watch All the Presidents Men. If you want to see a classic journalism movie, rent one of the multiple versions of The Front Page.

But if you want to see a movie that actually shows you what life is like inside a newsroom, how reporters work together to get a story, and how "the story" is not always about the big expose but sometimes just about getting the little details right, this is your movie.

You can also watch Ron Howard's The Paper, but it's a pale imitation of this movie.

The film brings up, a mere 53 years ago, issues that are relevant today - the tabloids versus real, factual news, and the meaning of a free press. These debates continue today, but unfortunately, it seems that the tabloid type of journalism is winning. As for a free press - our press might be freer than many, but it isn't entirely free. As anyone who lost money in the great savings and loan scandal can tell you, important stories disappear from the front pages all the time.

Bogart's strong performance is the engine that keeps this film going, and there's a nice performance by Kim Hunter as his ex-wife. Deadline USA reminds us of the good old days, when you could believe what you read in the New York Times.”

Coverage of the fashion designer's passing was just the
latest example of a sad journalistic tradition

When news broke that respected fashion designer L'Wren Scott
had passed away on Monday, The New York Times noted her suicide with the
regrettable headline "Mick Jagger's Girlfriend Found Dead."

The Times wasn't alone in its faux pas; the Associated Press
dutifully tweeted, "BREAKING: Law enforcement: Mick Jagger' [sic]
girlfriend, L'Wren Scott, found dead in NYC of possible suicide." Though
the AP managed to slip Scott's name in the headline of the report, both news
organizations seemed to agree: Scott's death was newsworthy only because of her
romantic association with a legendary rock and roller. Editors at neither The
New York Times nor the Associated Press seemed to grasp that Scott's untimely
death was newsworthy because of her professional accomplishments.

One would think that after the stroganoff incident, the Gray
Lady in particular would have found a better way to note the passing of
accomplished women, but it clearly hasn't. The poor handling of Scott's death
speaks more broadly to the difficulty of recounting a woman's life — namely the
determination of a hierarchy of facts, a project that should seem gender
neutral but rarely is. It often seems natural enough to define women by their
relationships — wife, mother, girlfriend, etc. — and let famous men be
memorialized for their accomplishments, their family lives taking a backseat.
This was certainly the case with the aforementioned stroganoff incident, in
which the Times' obituary writers downgraded Yvette Brill from rocket scientist
to pretty good cook.
