Councilmember Kevin Dayhoff Arts Council report for the June 10, 2019 Westminster mayor and Council meeting:

Councilmember Kevin Dayhoff Arts Council report for the June 10, 2019 Westminster
mayor and Council meeting:

There are quite a number of other events coming to the Arts Council.

For the sake of time, I will just mention two events here. For more information
go to: www.CarrollCountyArtsCouncil.org

I was not able to attend the
annual Art in the Park festival held on the grounds of Westminster City Hall. In
1993 I exhibited at the first Art in the Park and have exhibited a number of
times in the past, but this year I volunteered to help with the horses at the
annual Equestrian Special Olympics.

By all reports, this year’s
Art in the park went well – and was well-attended. This year, according to a
May 29, 2019 article by Cat Righter in the Carroll County Times - Susan
Williamson, the visual arts coordinator with the Carroll County Arts Council,
said that about 58 artists participated. Read the full story here: https://www.carrollcountytimes.com/entertainment/cc-en-art-park-20190528-story.html

“The Art of the
Musical Instrument” June 20 through August 9, 2019

Some of the highlights
include: “The Art of the Musical Instrument” Exhibit at the Carroll Arts Center

The Carroll Arts Center is
proud to be hosting a new exhibit in the Tevis Gallery from June 20 through
August 9, 2019. The “The Art of the Musical Instrument” weaves together sound,
narrative, history, and actual musical instruments. Guest curator Ryan A.
Koons, PhD, focuses on musical instruments as crafted art objects with diverse
histories as well as objects that create beautiful sounds.

This exhibit coincides with a
performance by Wherligig,
the Carroll-based traditional Celtic and Nordic acoustic ensemble, who will perform on Saturday, June
29 at 8 pm using several instruments from the exhibit.

Also on exhibit in the
Community Gallery are artworks by members of the Carroll County Camera Club in a show titled “Lens Art”
featuring new works in a variety of photographic styles.

The public is invited to a … reception for both exhibits on Thursday,
June 20, 2019 from 5 to 7 pm
.
Complimentary hors d'oeuvres and cash bar will be part of the festivities. The
exhibit is free and open to the public.

Respectfully submitted Councilmember
Kevin Dayhoff. Any questions, never hesitate to be in touch.

Babette’s Feast’ is scheduled to shown at the Carroll Arts Center

Babette’s Feast’ is scheduled to shown at the Carroll Arts Center at 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on November 16, 2018.

Carroll Arts Center
91 W Main St, Westminster, Maryland 21157

Sadly, Stéphane Audran just passed away on March 27, 2018. Read more here: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/27/obituaries/stephane-audran-who-starred-in-babettes-feast-dies-at-85.html. We can all agree that the Françoise Nyssen, France’s culture minister said it best, ““her presence, her elegance and her inimitable voice remain and resonate.”

According to the NY Times, “Although ‘Babette’s Feast’ was her best-known movie internationally — it won the Oscar for best foreign language film in 1988 — Ms. Audran by then had been famous for decades in France, most notably for her work in the films of the director Claude Chabrol, to whom she was married from 1964 to 1980."

According to the Carroll Arts Center, “Beautiful but pious sisters Martine (Birgitte Federspiel) and Philippa (Bodil Kjer) grow to spinsterhood under the wrathful eye of their strict pastor father on the forbidding and desolate coast of Jutland, until one day, Philippa's former suitor sends a Parisian refugee named Babette (Stéphane Audran) to serve as the family cook. Babette's lavish celebratory banquet tempts the family's dwindling congregation, who abjure such fleshly pleasures as fine foods and wines.

“Film Lovers in Carroll County (FLICC) continues their annual tradition of screening a movie right before Thanksgiving that brings attention to hunger in our own community along with a canned food drive. Bring a non-perishable food item and get a free small popcorn.

“Sponsored by JeannieBird Baking Company and Performance Food Group

See Dick Hull's latest photography at the Carroll Camera Club’s annual exhibition, Lens Flair” at the Carroll Arts Center.

January 29, 2015 KED

On Friday, February 9, 2007, Dick Hull retired from Carroll Land Services. The creative genius that made Carroll Land Services so successful can still be seen through the lens of his camera.

Find his latest work at the Carroll Arts Center in an exhibit with the Carroll Camera Club’s annual exhibition, Lens Flair.” http://www.carrollcountytimes.com/news/local/ph-cc-carroll-county-camera-club-20150120,0,2829628.story

According to Carroll County Times writer Jacob deNobel, the exhibition started on Thursday, January 22, 2015 and is “running until Feb. 28. The exhibition features photography from the group's 38 members and families, with subjects including nature photography, still-lifes, abstract images and landscapes

[…]

Mr. deNobel quotes Mr. Hull to remark, “Richard Hull, a nature photographer from Manchester who will be exhibiting in the show, said he began taking pictures in the mid-'80s when he became involved with underwater photography. When he bought his first digital camera in 2005, he had trouble with the new technology, though soon embraced the tech wholeheartedly.

“‘I’m not a computer guy, so to learn computers and the programs was pretty tough," Hull said. "In my opinion, it really is superior a lot of the time, even though there are people who would hate to hear me say it.’”

Carroll County Arts Center: Puros: Vistas of Cuba receptionThursday, January 8 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm

On View December 11 - February 28, 2015

Additional Details: The public is invited to a celebratory reception for both exhibits on Thursday, January 8 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.  There will be complimentary hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar.

In the Director’s Hall Gallery, “Puros: Vistas of Cuba” will feature works of art created by five local photographers that depict people, places and perspectives that are purely Cuban. The photos were taken during their May 2014 Cuban adventure sponsored by the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce.

The term "puros" refers to an authentic Cuban cigar, which has been contraband in the US since the trade embargo initiated in the early 1960s. That same embargo also strictly limits travel between the two countries.

The artists exhibiting are Stella Fouts (Millers, MD), Sharon Hafner Yingling (Westminster, MD), Don Hobart (Westminster, MD), Becki Maurio (Westminster, MD), and Mike McMullin (Westminster, MD).
