NEW YORK, N.Y.- One of the most acclaimed painters of his generation, George Tooker (1920-2011) possessed an originality and depth of vision that is unsurpassed in modern American art. For over sixty years, he has been highly regarded for his luminous and often enigmatic work. His themes range from alienation and the dehumanizing aspects of contemporary society to personal meditations on the human condition. By reducing action and anecdote to subtle gestures and juxtapositions that carry meaning and express essential truths, Tooker created modern allegories without traditional narrative content. Tooker died at his home in Hartland, Vermont, on Sunday, March 27 at the age of ninety. The cause was kidney failure according to DC Moore ... More  http://www.artdaily.org/index.asp?int_sec=2&int_new=46129

Explore Carroll: DAYHOFF: Watching your parking meter as the wheels of justice slowly turn

Fifty-five years ago, parking meters -- those silent silver sentinels of the Westminster business district -- were the source of a court case that stemmed from a simple "failure to communicate."
According to a newspaper account from March 21, 1946, the "long awaited court action against the parking meters for our city will be heard in the Circuit Court for Carroll County, with Associate Judge Clark, of Howard County, on the bench." ... http://www.explorecarroll.com/opinion/5292/watching-your-parking-meter-wheels-justice-slowly-turn/

LONDON (REUTERS).- He helped create one of rock's greatest bands, but the late Syd Barrett always considered himself a painter before a Pink Floyd founder. Speaking at an exhibition of the troubled musician's canvases and letters, his sister Rosemary Breen said Barrett could never understand why people put his brief success with Pink Floyd ahead of his lifelong passion for art. ...http://www.artdaily.org/index.asp?int_sec=2&int_new=45807

Kevin Dayhoff - The Tentacle: A Tribute to David Broder, A Reporter’s Reporter

March 16, 2011  http://tinyurl.com/4r4ahfv

David Broder, A Reporter’s Reporter
David S. Broder, 81, the well-respected dean of letters for The Washington Post for over four decades, has died from complications of diabetes.

In an era when too many writers shoot from the hip with commentary that is only rivaled by a bar room conversation with an inebriated unicorn, Mr. Broder always seemed to have a certain depth and gravitas to his work.

A prolific writer, The New York Times noted “Mr. Broder, whose last column was published February 6, was often called the dean of the Washington press corps and just as often described as a reporter’s reporter, a shoe-leather guy who always got on one more airplane, knocked on one more door, made one more phone call.

“He would travel more than 100,000 miles a year to write more than a quarter-million words. In short, he composed first drafts of history for an awful lot of history.”

In spite of that level of productivity, in the week since his death, I have been a bit unnerved by how many of my colleagues are not aware of the life and work of such a distinguished journalist, who seemed to effortlessly sit on either side of the typewriter as a hard-news newspaperman and a political commentator.

Although many could not recall his work at The Washington Post, it was only after I called attention to his numerous appearances on Washington Weekand Meet the Press that Mr. Broder came to life...  http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=4284

EAGLE ARCHIVE By Kevin Dayhoff Posted 3/13/11

It seems to be cold, flu and sinus season, compounded these days by state and local governments wrangling with budgets, controversial legislation, tax revenue declines and concerns about unemployment and the economy.

With all that in mind, I'm reminded that it was 112 years ago last Sunday that aspirin, one of the most widely used drugs in the world, was patented.

Actually, origins of this medicine, found in most everyone's medicine cabinet -- including our current Board of County Commissioners, I'd wager -- dates back to the beginnings of written history.

In an age when wonder drugs are being formulated in laboratories throughout the world, chances are you may not be aware the active ingredients of aspirin -- acetylsalicylic acid -- were originally discovered as a plant extract from willow and poplar trees, and the shrub spirea.

Ancient Sumerians and Egyptians used the plant extract as a remedy for pain, fever and inflammation.

The first modern-day clinical trial for aspirin was reported by… http://www.explorecarroll.com/opinion/5244/facing-issues-day-heres-ode-little-pain-reliever/
