Melissa Dorrance Disciplemakers Spring 2013 Exciting New Steps

Exciting New Steps!

God's work in Spring 2013

It has been a whirlwind year since I first joined staff with DiscipleMakers back in August 2012 and God has been at work in huge ways this year, both in my life and in those of college students!  I am so thrilled and captivated by the vision and mission that I now have before me to “Go and make disciples of all the nations!”  Here are a few recent highlights from this past semester:
Focus: DiscipleMakers just held its week-long end of year student conference Focus!  We had a combined 240 students across both weeks.  Not only did several students give their lives to Christ, but also many others were deeply impacted by the Gospel teaching throughout the conference and the heart seeking community.  One student remarked, "The reminder God gave me this week about how I'm called to walk by His grace was really refreshing. I often forget that God gives me grace because HE is good...not because I'm good."
Gettysburg Graduation: After 4 years of academics, fun, and friends, it was hard to say goodbye to Gettysburg, but also immensely exciting!  I am very thankful to have graduated on May 19th with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religious Studies, and am now excited to begin full-time with DiscipleMakers!  It was bittersweet to say goodbye to all of my close friends from Gettysburg especially the dear brothers and sisters whom I met through DM and who have gotten to know my heart, failures, and joys these past 4 years in a deep way.
Baccalaureate: The day before Graduation I had the privilege of delivering the Baccalaureate address to the senior class.  Not only was this a huge testament to how God has been at work in my life building me in influence among the professors and students of the institution, but it was even more exciting, because I got to share the Gospel with my graduating class and was able to exhort them to root their identities in something less temporal than academic success or temporary jobs and relationships.  Here is a link to the brief speech if you are interested in listening!
Support-Raising: God is at work in powerful ways!  I began full-time support-raising on May 21st and God has really blessed those efforts by building up a prayer and financial support team.  Currently I am 46% of the way towards achieving my financial goal for my ministry with DiscipleMakers.  Praise God for providing people like yourselves who are eager to pray for or financially support this mission.  I am so blessed to have you all as partners in ministry!
Engagement:  There have been even more changes in my life!  Just this past week on June 13th I got engaged to Andy Cimbala!  Andy works for DiscipleMakers and leads the ministry at Shippensburg University.  We couldn’t be more giddy and excited about where the Lord has been leading our relationship and are eager to get married and begin ministering the Gospel together as a team!
Andy and I right after engagement!  Here is a link that tells more!

Prayers:

Thank you for supporting me with your prayers and finances!  I am deeply awed by how God has worked in all of your hearts and am so encouraged to have you as fellow laborers for the truth!

  1. Please pray for my continued support-raising: that God would raise the necessary funds swiftly and that He would refocus me on the true purpose of support raising, to encourage people with the Gospel and with how God is at work in the world.
  2. Please pray for current students as they are home over the summer.  Often students are returning to broken homes and communities where they must experience and wrestle with shame, loneliness, anxiety, or the lure of false “idols.”
  3. Please be praying for Andy and I as we plan our wedding and continue to grow in relationship with each other!  Pray we would grow daily in our love for Jesus and that He would remain the foundation of our relationship.  Only Jesus will keep our relationship flourishing and grounded for the years to come!

Ice Cream

Ice Cream

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream.

In Jupiter, Florida, we stopped over at a family member’s house, Brian and Trudy’s, for ice cream.

And ah, well, we had just a few flavors from to choose…

Grammy bicycling with roommate c 1946

The bicyclers. Evelyn Fluck and Nadine Eustis bicycle on the campus of Gettysburg College around 1946. Click here for a larger image: http://twitpic.com/okryf or here: http://kevindayhoff.tumblr.com/post/235665311/the-bicyclers-evelyn-fluck-and-nadine-eustis

In May 2003, when this picture, from approximately 1946, of Grammy Evelyn Fluck Babylon on a bicycle with her roommate, Nadine (Deanie) Eustis at Gettysburg College became available; Grammy was asked to give us some additional information about the picture. Here, in part, is her response:

Grammy - how about keyboarding in a few words about this occasion for the family. When do you remember the picture being taken? What was the name of your roommate? Where was the picture taken? Did you bicycle a lot? Who took the picture? Did you have any goats at the time?

Grammy responded:

“No goats, but we had names for our bicycles. Mine was Pega'sus, and I'm sorry that I can't remember Deanie's bicycle's name. Nadine Eustis (Deanie) was my roommate for four years. She came from New Rochelle, NY… she was very down-to-earth, … very intelligent.

“She majored in French and was Phi Beta Kappa. Married a minister, Ted Lindquist, and made a very good minister's wife, I am led to believe.

“The picture was taken just outside our dorm on the G-burg campus, although I don't remember the occasion. We frequently bicycled around the battlefield. I as reminded, as I saw the picture, that Mamma had made the jacket that I am wearing. She'd probably made the plaid jumper I had on, also, but I don't remember that as well. She made most of my dresses and coats.

“I bought the bicycle with money that I had earned during the summer after my sophomore year as the nature counselor at a church girls' camp in the Poconos.

“We ‘parked’ the bikes just outside the door to the dorm. We lived in the tiny room that was straight across the hall from that door. My bike was stolen during my senior year. No, of course, I had not put the lock on it that night.

“But life got busy with dates with fellas who had cars - like Dave - and a bicycle was not as big a necessity as it once had been, so Pegasus was not replaced.

“Deanie died just before we came home from Florida this year, and Ted found that picture and sent it to me. I was really pleased to get it because it is very good of Deanie.

“Sorry, that's a few more than a ‘few words,’ but you shouldn't get these old folks started if you don't want to hear a good bit. Love, Grammy”

“Guy Babylon, from New Windsor, long-term keyboardist for Elton John has passed away” http://explorecarroll.com/obituaries/3374/babylon/

September 3, 2009 By Kevin Dayhoff

Guy Babylon, 52, died Wednesday evening in Los Angeles, California, according to family sources and Elton John’s official website.

He was born on December 20, 1956, in New Windsor, the son of Graham and Mary Babylon, owners of the Babylon Vault Company, a Carroll County business that has manufactured burial vaults since 1930.

After he attended Francis Scott Key High School he earned his BFA in music composition from the University of South Florida. In 1980, six months after graduation he moved to California, where he quickly established himself as an accomplished keyboardist and composer and respected session musician.

Babylon, as a young man, was known to be a national level swimmer and a family member noted with pride that he once beat Mark Spitz, of Olympic swimming fame. Babylon died of an apparent heart attack while swimming.

Elton John, who according to his official web site, is on holiday in Nice, France, said: “I am devastated and heartbroken at the death of Guy Babylon. Guy played over 1000 shows with me, and we worked together on The Road To El Dorado, Aida, Billy Elliot, Lestat and Gnomeo and Juliet, as well as on countless albums.

“He was one of the most brilliant musicians I ever knew, a true genius, a gentle angel - and I loved him so much. David and I send our deep condolences to Kathy, Max, Ben and Jessica, to Guy's parents, to Kathy's parents and to all his immediate loved ones.’

The web site reports, “Guy's first performance with Elton was for a benefit at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles in July 1988, and his first world tour as part of the Elton John Band began two months later in Miami, Florida.

“Guy became lead keyboardist on May 26, 1992, and has been the only synth man on stage since the Walden Woods Benefit Concert in the fall of 1993.”

UPDATE: Be sure to read Jennifer Jiggetts’
Carroll County Times story. She did a great job: “Elton John's keyboardist, New Windsor native dead” at 52 By Jennifer Jiggetts, Times Staff Writer Friday, September 04, 2009

http://www.carrollcountytimes.com/articles/2009/09/04/news/local_news/newsstory3_keyboardist_new_windsor.txt

When he was in seventh grade, Guy Babylon and several of his New Windsor friends formed a band.

They performed at the New Windsor carnival, gave small concerts by Babylon’s pool and won many talent shows in Carroll County. The band rehearsed wherever it could.

Those practices would set the foundation years later for a more famous gig for Babylon: backing up Elton John.

Babylon, John’s lead keyboardist, died Wednesday night in California. He was 52.
