I do not recall visiting the St. Luke's Winters Lutheran Church before. I have heard great things about the church and I was excited to take advantage of opportunity to go to the fall dinner meeting of the Lutheran church men of the Westminster Conference. Especially since my pastor at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church at 21 Carroll Street in Westminster is the new Dean of the Westminster Conference...

I did a little research on the church and found that it has a nice - informative website... Hopefully I can write an article on the church in the future for the Baltimore Sun Carroll Eagle: http://www.baltimoresun.com/search/dispatcher.front?Query=Dayhoff&target=adv_article

Organization of St. Luke's (Winters) Lutheran Church

Cemetery Tombstone Inscriptions (18th & 19th Century)

According to a church history, written by Betty Munshaur, the church’s historian emeritus, which appears on the church website

St. Luke's (Winter's) Lutheran Church is the fifth oldest surviving Lutheran Church in what is now Carroll County, Maryland.

Antiquated books at Gettysburg Lutheran Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania state that our church was organized as the Evangelical Lutheran (Winter's) Church in 1783. Our first evidence of the name of St. Luke's (Winters) Lutheran Church was in the Articles of Incorporation of March 30, 1856.

It is believed that some of our earliest settlers in Carroll County, New Windsor (Frederick County until 1837) worshipped in homes and groves long before St. Luke's (Winter's) Lutheran Church was organized.

It has been recorded that as early as 1766 George Francis Winter, who was one of the earliest settlers near the town of New Windsor, received an application from German colonists in Pennsylvania for land for the erection of a prospective Lutheran church, and for land for farming purposes. It has been stated by historians that a log church was erected in 1772.

However, the church was not organized until 1783, eleven years later, apparently under the direction of The Rev. Johann Daniel Schroeter. This organization was documented in our old record book at the Gettysburg Seminary. The old register dated 1783-1884 is still intact, and is kept at the Seminary because of its antiquity.

On March 30, 1856, our church was incorporated under the name of St. Luke's (Winter's) Lutheran Church. Most of the first members (communicants) of our church were German immigrants.

The old register at Gettysburg is in old German, as well as some of our old tombstones in the cemetery. Both the German Reformed and Lutherans used our church at one time. We were probably served by the same itinerant preachers as the Taneytown charge, and we were once part of the Westminster charge.

In 1870, we were part of the Uniontown Parish. This union lasted until 1979 (109 years). In 1979, we decided to take on the responsibilities of our own full-time pastor.

Our present church was built in 1875, and has been remodeled several times. The parish hall was added in 1958.

Caroline’s hands – our dried mangoes.

Caroline’s hands – our dried mangoes.

August 21, 2013

Long road trips require ample portions of dried mangoes in order to properly maintain the mind, body, spirit and soul to be appropriately prepared for the journey.

Pictured here are the all-important hands that handled the dried mangoes on our recent trip to the 2013 Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Churchwide Assembly in Pittsburg during the week of Aug. 12-17 in Pittsburgh.

This picture was taken on our way up the road to Pittsburgh on August 10, 2013. It captures a moment in which the dried mangoes are in Caroline’s hands as she waxes poetically upon the importance and spirituality of this food of the Gods…

The Assembly took “action on some 80 ‘memorials’ or requests from synods asking for Churchwide Assembly action on significant issues,” according to a thoughtful and comprehensive article written about the assembly by Lutheran magazine writer, Elizabeth Hunter, “Paperless in Pittsburgh.” The article by Ms. Hunter appeared in the August edition of the magazine.

Ms. Hunter noted that voting members faced “Some big decisions … amid daily worship, prayer and Bible studies under the theme "Always Being Made New," based on 2 Corinthians 5:17.”

At the 2013 Lutheran Churchwide Assembly, 952 voting members from the ELCA's 65 synods and 9,638 congregations elected a new presiding bishop and secretary, and deliberated and adopted various budgets, financial campaigns, social statements.

Last week, Caroline Babylon, Evelyn Babylon, Beth Clementson and I volunteered at the 2013 Churchwide Assembly that was hosted by the Southwestern Pennsylvania Synod.

It was the last biennial gathering of the ELCA's highest legislative authority before the assembly transitions to a triennial cycle, according to Ms. Hunter.

“Always being made New” was the theme of The Evangelical Lutheran Church in American 2013 Churchwide Assembly that took place August 12-17, 2013 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, Pittsburgh, PA.

The Happy Lutherans celebrate Monday FEBRUARY 18, 2013 to commemorate the death of Martin Luther

The Happy Lutherans celebrate Monday FEBRUARY 18, 2013 to commemorate the death of Martin Luther

A big Hat Tip goes out to Bill Babylon for calling to our attention that:

Monday, February 18, 2013 is not only a United States national holiday, but also an international holiday…

467 years after Martin Luther’s death a national holiday has been proclaimed to remember the great reformer.

All Federal and State offices are closed, as well as banks and schools (check your newspapers for other closures).

Some appropriate ways to mark the occasion are:
Wear red (chartreuse doesn't count)
Nail something to a door.
Stand somewhere and refuse to budge.
Do something paradoxical.
Translate something into German.
Set your ring tone to "Ein Feste Burg"
All Lutherans may have this day as a personal holiday (check with your employer).

(Note: It also seems to be President's Day. Apparently, the best way to observe that is to buy something- perhaps even a President!)

This message brought to you by the Happy Lutherans

The first Sunday in Lent at All Angels by the Sea Episcopal Church in Long Boat Key

The first Sunday in Lent at All Angels by the Sea Episcopal Church in Long Boat Key

Sunday, February 17, 2013

After a quick breakfast, we walked to church.

We attended church at the 10 a.m. services at All Angels by the Sea Episcopal Church - http://www.allangelslbk.org/ 563 Bay Isles Rd. | Longboat Key,  FL 34228-3142 (941) 383-8161

In all of my travels, this has to be one of the most welcoming and friendliest churches I have visited in many years.

An idea for later in the week: The Sandpipers - Men's Fellowship Meeting Tue - Feb 19, 2013 11:30 am - 1:30 pm All Angels Men's Fellowship Group , The Sandpipers, meets Tuesday, February 19 at 11:30 a.m. for a time of fellowship, followed by lunch, and a lecture on the sinking of the USS Indianapolis during WWII. Call the church office, 941-383-8161, to register.
