Snappy Retorts To Rude Holiday Questions

Snappy Retorts To Rude Holiday Questions

Welcome to December! Get out the tissue paper and the bows. While you're at it, get out the tissues and the waterproof mascara. It's the holiday season, sweetie. Just face the fact that somebody in your family will make you cry before the month is out.

I don't care whether you're Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Shinto or a practicing atheist; if you're female and you have relatives, you'll be making weepy, baby-seal eyes at somebody's casual question while "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" plays endlessly in the background....

[...]

To prepare in advance for assaults both real and imagined, I asked my friends Sam and Antoinette to compile a series of replies to help the most fragile egos survive the rest of 2011 with the fewest tears — while having the most fun possible.... http://www.baltimoresun.com/hc-op-barreca-christmas-time-questions-1202-20111202,0,2306352.column

ArtLex on the Fluxus Movement

ArtLex on the Fluxus Movementhttp://www.artlex.com/ArtLex/f/fluxus.html

Fluxus - An art movement begun in 1961/1962, which flourished throughout the 1960s, and into the 1970s. Characterized by a strongly Dadaist attitude, Fluxus promoted artistic experimentation mixed with social and political activism, an often celebrated anarchistic change. Although Germany was its principal location, Fluxus was an international avant-gardemovement active in major Dutch, English, French, Swedish, and American cities. Its participants were a divergent group of individualists whose most common theme was their delight inspontaneity and humor.

Fluxus members avoided any limiting art theories, and spurned pure aesthetic objectives, producing such mixed-media works as found poems, mail art, silent orchestras, and collages of such readily available materials as scavanged posters, newspapers, and other ephemera. Their activities resulted in many events or situations, often called "Aktions" works challenging definitions of art as focused on objects -- performances, guerilla or street theater, concerts of electronic music many of them similar to what in America were known as Happenings.

In Latin and other languages, "Fluxus" literally means "flow" and "change." Similarly, the related English word "flux" is used variously to mean "a state of continuous change," "a fusion," and "a gushing of fluid from a body."... http://www.artlex.com/ArtLex/f/fluxus.html

Joseph Beuys was born May 12, 1921, in Krefeld, Germany

During his school years in Kleve, Beuys was exposed to the work of Achilles Moortgat, whose studio he often visited, and was inspired by the sculptures of Wilhelm Lehmbruck. Beuys began to study medicine in 1940, but his studies were interrupted when he joined the army and served as a fighter pilot.

During a mission in 1943, he was badly injured when his plane crashed in a desolate region of south Russia. This experience would resonate in all of his later work...

Adults and teenagers enjoy presents, too, and that's why the Neighbor in Need's holiday shop tries to offer something for every member of the family, from young to old.

"Who wants to wake up on Christmas morning and not have something?' said Holly Hutchins, deputy director of the program. "That's the focus of the program, we serve the whole household."

Created in 1987 through the Human Services Program of Carroll County, Neighbors in Need has the goal of helping low income families and individuals during the holidays.

    Sideline View By Steve Jones

The decision last week by the Baltimore Ravens to move their summer training camp from Westminster's McDaniel College to the team facility in Owings Mills came down to hearts and minds.

To thousands of football fans in the Baltimore area whose hearts belong to the football team, the Ravens were presented with an easy choice.

Since coming to Baltimore from Cleveland in 1996, the Ravens conducted training camp at McDaniel every summer until this past one, when the club remained at its Owings Mills base due to a late resolution to the lockout. It seemed logical that the Ravens would return in 2012, because you don't break with tradition.

But tradition isn't what it used to be, especially in sports, and the world is light-years removed from 1996.

The Ravens' brass used their heads when finalizing last week's decision to move training camp to their spacious and comfortable Owings Mills complex. Sad as it may be to Carroll and Westminster, the decision makes sense on many levels... Yahoo's future: Facebook's OpenGraph?

    Hat Tip: - Dec 5, 2011 (edited) - Public

Yahoo News is seeing huge returns from Facebook's Open Graph, is this the future of Flickr?

Here Mike Kerns, who runs social and personalization at +Yahoo! News talks to me about the effects Yahoo has seen thanks to the inclusion of Open Graph technology from Facebook (AKA "frictionless sharing").

I think this could be the future of Yahoo's strategy. Why? I know this will be an unpopular view here, but you can't ignore the effect that they are seeing "the numbers have beaten all of our expectations," Kerns sees. Over 10 million people joined. 600% increase in traffic from Facebook to Yahoo. Demographic shift: marked increase in users under 30 years old.

These numbers show that this is a strategy that Yahoo should expand on....https://plus.google.com/111091089527727420853/posts/LoPcxYYsaYS
