The only actor nominated for an Oscar in Spike Lee's film
"BlacKkKlansman," is white.

Feb. 24, 2019

In recent years, watching the Oscars has become tedious. For
that matter, when I did media criticism years ago for another publication, I
wrote about the Oscars becoming irrelevant mindless drivel. So many pathologically
narcissistic Hollywood-types examining their navel with a cracked mirror.

In the latest Oscar death rattle: according to an article I
found on Yahoo, “Aubrey Plaza rips on Oscars and Netflix in hilarious Spirit
Awards monologue:”  https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/aubrey-plaza-rips-oscars-netflix-005201592.html
which first appeared in USA TODAY, “The host of the Spirit Awards, Aubrey
Plaza, used part of her opening monologue to make fun of the Oscars…

“Another part of Plaza's monologue that got plenty of laughs
was about Spike Lee's film "BlacKkKlansman," because its only actor
nominated is a Caucasian star.

" 'BlacKkKlansman' explores the struggle of a black
police officer to find his role in the fight against white supremacy. So
congratulations to the sole nominee from that film today, Adam Driver. We are
so proud of you. You were the best one. I’m sure they’ll do the white
thing."

You cannot make this up. I have not watched the Oscars in
years. It is no longer relevant. It killed itself with its pathological narcissistic
personality defect.

I can’t wait to read the reaction of my colleague and good friend, Kenny Burns, who is my resident Kanye West authority. Read, “Red Maryland: Memo to Kanye: Liberals Do Not Care About People, period,” By P. Kenneth Burns, the editor of Maryland Politics Today.

Kanye West grabs mic from Taylor Swift at the MTV VMAs and makes a complete fool of himself – it wasn’t hard for Mr. West. He’s a professional troll.

Remember his September 2, 2005 outburst during a live-television Katrina fund-raiser: “George Bush doesn't care about black people.”

Click here for an image of the actual moment West grabbed the microphone from a visibly startled Swift:

September 14, 2009 by Kevin Dayhoff

By now many folks are aware of the hip-hop musician and rapper, Kanye West’s cringe worthy YouTube moment when he jumped up on the stage Sunday night at Radio City Music Hall during the MTV Video Music Awards and grabbed the microphone away from Taylor Swift and ranted that Beyoncé had been overlooked for the “Best Female Video” award.

Swift, 19, a country music sensation, had won the award for “You Belong With Me,” was just beginning to say, “I always wondered what it would be like to maybe win one of these someday, but never actually thought it would happen...”

Well, her moment in the sun did not happen as a result of the crass, bizarre behavior of Kanye – anything goes, cuz I’m self-absorbed and narcissistic – West.

Our hearts went out to Swift. It was her first award, and, well, West rained on her parade ‘real good.’ An obviously shaken Swift not finish her acceptance remarks…

Fortunately as tacky and classless as West was; the hero of the hour was the singer Beyoncé, who showed some grace, poise and class; and invited Swift up on stage to say a few words, when Beyoncé was awarded “video of the year” for “Single Ladies.”

20060831 KDDC Farrah Fawcett Angel for the ages

Farrah Fawcett - Angel for the ages

On August 29, 2006, Sun Reporter Rob Hiaasen, wrote a piece in the Baltimore Sun that captured my eye.

I must admit that the cultural phenomena of Farrah Fawcett came after I had attended Elon College (1971-1972 no degree,) so I never had her pin-up in my dorm room. I had Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, Alvin Lee, The Almond Brothers Band and the like in my dorm room.

Hollywood types have never really been my heroes, not that the likes of Hendrix, Bowie et al were – I was and still am today – into music more than Hollywood…

Never-the-less, I am fascinated by Mr. Hiaasen’s presentation of Ms. Fawcett as a cultural icon of the 1970s:

A young publicity photographer shows up on Mulholland Drive with his '37 Chevy truck and Nikon-F reflex camera to shoot pictures of an angel in a rusty red swimsuit. She chose a one-piece. When she smiles, 32 teeth radiate at an inviting angle. When she tilts her head, flips of hair gather on her tan shoulders - a look that would launch a hairstyle fad for a generation.

In the time after Betty Grable's World War II pinups and Marilyn Monroe, before the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue mania and Pamela Anderson, the original swimsuit poster of Farrah Fawcett ruled gym lockers, offices and bedrooms.

Could you pass a guy's college dorm room in the 1970s and not see it?

Whatever.

You can read Mr. Hiaasen’s article here.
