Breakfast at Applebee’s supports Carroll Co NAACP education fund

Breakfast at Applebee’s supports Carroll Co NAACP education
fund

July 29th fundraising event at the Applebee’s in Westminster
supports Carroll County NAACP education fund

Westminster, June 30, 2017 - - Attached please find a flyer
of our annual Carroll County NAACP “Continuing Education Grant” fundraiser at
Applebee's in Westminster on Saturday, July 29th at 8 a.m. until 10:00 a.m.

Every year, along with the Pehl Foundation, the Carroll
County NAACP gives at least one $1,000 Continuing Education Award to a high
achieving student in Carroll County Public Schools planning to go to a trade
school, college, or university. The money raised from the Applebee’s event goes
directly into the CC NAACP continuing education fund.

Tickets are only $10/person – and children under 12 are
$5.00 apiece.

Please mark your calendars now and begin informing your
family and friends.

The GPS address is: Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar,
634 Baltimore Boulevard, Westminster, MD 21157

I have attended several fundraisers at Applebee’s over the
years for a number of different community organizations. It is actually a
really unique experience in that the community organization that benefits from
the fundraiser actually takes over the restaurant. Essentially every booth is
filled with a family that you either know or want to get to know because you
share a common interest in supporting an organization that supports the greater
community. It’s like a big extended family get together.

Looking forward to seeing you on July 29th, 2017

Off Track Art Reception for photographer Bob Boner will take place July 18, 2014

Off Track Art Reception for photographer Bob Boner will take place July 18, 2014

An exhibition featuring photographer Bob Boner will begin July 1, 2014 and run through August 31, 2014 at Off Track Art in Westminster.

A reception will take place on July 18th, 2014, from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Off Track Art partner Nolly Gelsinger recently wrote, “ff Track Art is pleased to welcome July-August* guest artist, photographer Bob Boner.  Bob’s lens captures nuances of the natural world:  small and large mammals, birds, plants, and landscapes.

“Bob is essentially self-taught, though he admits to pestering more experienced photographers with “countless questions.”  He taught both traditional and digital photography at WMC/McDaniel College in addition to his regular classes for the mathematics department.

“Since his retirement in 2007, Bob has been able to travel to find a wider range of subjects and at home, his growing grandchildren are favorite models.”

In a recent e-mail Mr. Boner wrote, “I became interested in photography in 1968 when I lost my wife's camera in a canoe accident. Fortunately, I didn't lose her.

“I am essentially self-taught in the sense that I have taken no formal photography classes, but pestered more accomplished photographers with countless questions.

“A chemist, an artist, and I taught the first photography class at Western Maryland (now McDaniel) College in 1972. After that, I taught it by myself, whenever I could, in the January Term, regular semesters, and summer school, until the college hired a full-time photography teacher.

“With the advent of digital photography, I began teaching photography again. In 2007 I retired from my full-time position in the mathematics department after 37 years, but continued teaching photography in the January Term.

“My photographic interests are primarily nature/wildlife and grandchildren. My original interest in wildlife was in bird photography. But since retiring, I have been able to get out west in late fall to photograph other species of wildlife.”

Historical Society of Carroll Co Announces the Creation of a Lasting Memorial to Mike Eaton

Historical Society of Carroll County Announces the Creation of a Lasting Memorial to William Granville (“Mike”) Eaton

News Release DATE: July 30, 2010

CONTACT: Timmi Pierce , Executive Director, Historical Society of Carroll County, 210 East Main Street, Westminster MD 21157

Email: tpierce@carr.org Phone: 410-848-6494

A Legacy of Learning Lives On

The Babylon Family of Westminster

and the Historical Society of Carroll County

Announces the Creation of a Lasting Memorial to

William Granville (“Mike”) Eaton

William Granville “Mike” Eaton (1908) was a renaissance man until he died in 1995,

For 41 years, Mike Eaton taught English and drama in Carroll County schools, 38 of those years at Westminster High School. Always he demanded excellence.

He gave to his community through the Westminster Kiwanis Club. He gave to the community through his affiliation with Grace Lutheran Church. He produced memorable theatrical offerings as coach of the Westminster High School Drama Club.

Eaton nurtured future leaders through the Kiwanis Key Club and inspired many students, friends and colleagues to higher glory. Among his students was writer (On Golden Pond), director and actor Ernest Thompson whose work has won him an Oscar, a Golden Globe and Writer’s Guild of America awards. Although best known perhaps, Thompson is not the only student Eaton inspired to excel in the creative arts.

For over three decades, Mike Eaton was Thelma Hoffman’s star boarder at Hoffman’s Inn, now owned by the Historical Society of Carroll County and known as Cockey’s as it was known when built in 1820.

In life Mike Eaton was roasted and toasted. In death he is being memorialized in the room that was his very own at Cockey’s.

Under the partnership of the David Babylon family of Westminster and the Historical Society of Carroll County, former students, friends and colleagues are building a lasting memorial with a lofty but achievable goal.

The first $10,000 has been raised to open the Mike Eaton Room on the third floor of Cockey’s, complete with much of his memorabilia catalogued and displayed. The second goal is the raising of $25,000 to name a second floor conference room. When that goal is accomplished, the Mike Eaton Committee and the Historical Society will raise a $250,000 endowment that will carry the Eaton name forth in perpetuity for years to come.

Eighty percent of the earnings generated by the scholarship endowment will go directly to qualifying, graduating students who will also be asked to name their most inspirational teacher for a recognition gift. Twenty percent of the scholarship fund will go to support the educational mission of the Historical Society.

Committee Chairperson Evelyn Babylon notes that it will take much dedication and time to develop a scholarship endowment of this magnitude. Criteria for scholarship applications will be completed at a later date and amounts will be determined by the returns on the endowment investments.

CELEBRATIONS
Happy Birthday, Off Track Art, celebrating one year as a coop gallery!

Join us in celebrating this young venue, along with celebrating Nancy Schmitt, who this winter becomes the second of rotating guest artists exhibiting with Off Track Art.

Come to our Opening Reception to see her wonderful, richly-colored felted objects.

New work in the gallery also include Linda Van Hart’s Meditation: Sense of Self and The Three Graces, beautiful collage statements created while in Budapest; vibrant new photographs by Gordon Wickes; Mary Decker’s bright, framed assemblages and other fun objects; Melinda Byrd’s intimate gestural drawings of jazz & blues musicians; and many more drawings, paintings, jewelry, and mixed media works that will delight and surprise!

Opening Reception: Friday, February 12, 2010... 5:30-7:30 PM. See you there!

GUEST ARTIST

By combining her fine arts and textile design backgrounds, Nancy Schmitt creates unique vessels, wall hangings and wearables made of felted wool. Her passion for working with wool fiber, along with the organic nature of the medium, help her connect the ancient traditions of felt making with modern artistry. Because wool is an organic medium, she must be willing to surrender preconceived design notions and allow the fiber to develop its own unique shape and form. The surface becomes truly three dimensional with the addition of beads that capture and reflect light. Sculptural cuts in the matte wool add texture and expose color changes in the fiber layers.

From Sarah Abel DeLuca

Hello OTA Friends and Supporters,

In September I doffed my Off Track Art member hat to don a new one: that of #1 fan.

The OTA member hat was one that I was very proud and happy to wear, but when it became difficult to do justice to both my co-op commitments and my core artist activities -- commissioned painting and teaching -- I knew I had to let something go.

Fortunately, the decision was simple, though hardly easy. Capturing people's memories in paint (via commissioned painting) and helping them tap into their own artistic potential (via art classes) is not only my livelihood, it's my purpose in life. And I'm not actually losing anything by switching hats. As an OTA fan, I still keep in touch with my talented co-op friends, support their great venture, and mingle with the wonderful community of art lovers who make it all possible.

Thanks for your support and patronage, and I look forward to seeing you at OTA events! You can reach me at any time for commissioned paintings, classes (private or public), and speaking engagements:

Sykesville - Several violent thunderstorms ripped through southern Carroll County Sunday evening. The storm downed trees and power lines, damaged cars and 37 homes; and kept the Sykesville Freedom District Fire Company busy past midnight.

The Baltimore Gas and Electric Company reported 2700 homes without power as the evening wore-on.

The first call for help was received by the Sykesville fire department at 5:52 pm. Before the evening was over, the department had responded to over 39 – 911 calls including one call in which two persons had to be extricated from a vehicle struck by a fallen tree, according to Sykesville fire department chief Ed Ruch, Sr.

It was moments earlier, at 5:40 pm that, according to “The Emergency Email and Wireless Network”: “the National Weather Service in Sterling Va issued a severe thunderstorm warning for N. Howard County in central Md. So. central Carroll County in No. central Md. and southwestern Baltimore County in N. Md. until 645 Pm EDT.

“At 538 Pm EDT. Natl Weather Svc Doppler Radar Indicated A Severe Thunderstorm. This Storm Was Located 9 Miles West Of Sykesville.& Moving East At 25 Mph.

“Locations Impacted Include: Sykesville, Eldersburg, Gamber, Oakland, Ellicott City, Randallstown, Owings Mills, Milford Mill, Reisterstown, and Lochearn. Hail To The Size Of Pennies Can Be Expected In The Warned Area.”

An article by Clay Myers on the Gamber and Community Fire Company website reports “One very large old tree at the corner of Sunset and Liberty Lake Drive in Eldersburg blew down on top of a car during the sudden storm. For more information and pictures, click here.

“Units from Sykesville Freedom District Fire Department, Liberty Road Volunteer Fire Company (Baltimore County), and Gamber & Community Fire Co. were alerted for a tree on a car with people trapped at approximately 6:07 pm.

“First arriving units reported multiple persons trapped. Remaining units arrived from different directions and conducted a rescue operation. Numerous neighbors had already started using chain saws to remove limbs from the car. Two children were rescued and sent to Johns Hopkins Hospital Pediatric Emergency Room by ambulance.”

Meanwhile, firefighters from the Sykesville department worked late into the night going door-to-door in the three-mile area around the Oak Hill, Locust Lane, Liberty Road, and Macbeth Way area of the county checking on citizens and doing a damage assessment.

For several hours in the late evening an emergency response command center was set-up at the Sykesville fire station conference room to coordinate the response to the damage and an evacuation shelter was set-up in the station’s social hall staffed by members of the Red Cross and the Sykesville fire department auxiliary.

The command center was staffed by members of the Sykesville fire department, Maryland State Police, Carroll County Sheriff’s Department, the Carroll County Emergency Management Division, and the Carroll County Chapter of the American Red Cross.

In the command center, Sykesville department public information officer Dennis Beard and county emergency management division representative Chrissy Calp helped coordinate the county emergency response efforts with the county roads department, Vivian Laxton, the county public information officer and Chief Ruch, who served as the incident commander.

At the command center, Major Tom Long of the county Sheriff’s Department said sheriff’s department deputies would maintain heightened patrols throughout the night and into Monday.

Chief Ruch said that “come daylight people will be surprised as to how much damage was done to the area.”

According to several citizen reports, the widespread damage was caused by what appeared to have been a tornado.

A funnel cloud was reported to have spotted as citizens scrambled for cover. Firefighters reported trees “twisted” and damaged in swath that travelled east to west across the region.

As midnight fell upon the station, the last of the firefighters who had gone door-to-door returned to the fire station with a house-by-house list of the damaged properties and reported that portions of at least four roads remained closed: Raincliffe, Oakland Mills, Liberty Lake Drive and Slacks Road.

In other parts of the state, WJZ Channel 13 reporter Mike Schuh “reports the damage in Baltimore County was widespread…

“‘Within the darkness, I saw from the corner of my eye, a really dark snarling mass. I guess a funnel cloud was going to go right through the door," said one onlooker.’

“‘We all ran into the basement, stayed there for about a minute or two, and then realized that it passed by,’ said another man.

“The storm packed hail and high winds.

“There were more than 20,000 people without power just in Baltimore County.”

Is it wrong that I don't care?

Is it wrong that I don't care?

In the last week three celebrities have died. Ed McMahon, Farah Fawcet and now Michael Jackson. I was briefly saddened by all of those deaths, especially Farah’s because of her long, painful battle with cancer. She was definitely a female icon - I mean her hairstyle defined a generation of women.

Along the same lines, Michael Jackson defined an entire genre of music - he was thrust into the spotlight at the age of 6 and never got a break from it.

McMahon was a regular on the Tonight Show, host of Star Search and those publisher clearing house things - he was a household name.

So I'm not surprised the world is saddened by their deaths.

However, I am surprised that Michael Jackson's death has taken over every single news outlet in the country (I'm not so sure about elsewhere) and I just read on CNN that his death took over the internet yesterday as well, and almost took it out.

[…]

I just can't really comprehend it. There are people out there in this world actually mourning the loss of these people. Having memorials, putting flowers on their Walk of Fame stars and all sorts of other things and it just weirds me out.

[…]

There are more important things to worry about today, like how to get the GOP to get their heads out of their asses and admit there is no such thing as the "sanctity of marriage," (thank you S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford and all you other philandering politicians) while the rest of us try to get more women, minorities and gay men/women into public office.
