Jad and David Fair

Published on Jul 20, 2006: Some say Half Japanese were the world's greatest underground band. Jad and David Fair started the band HALF JAPANESE in their bedroom in Uniontown, Maryland in 1975. Though neither could play a single note on any instrument, they went on to record one of the greatest albums of all time.

Last Sunday, July 2, 2017 at the 10:30 in the morning service at Grace Lutheran Church

Last Sunday, July 2, 2017 at the 10:30 in the morning service at  Grace Lutheran Church. Pastor Martha spoke to us about Matthew 10: 40-42 "Whoever welcomes you welcomes me … and whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one …"

She asked the question, "What does it mean in our world today to offer a cup of cold water? How do we provide a compassionate welcome to others?"

She finished her sermon by saying, "I leave you today with a challenge for this week: Look and listen for concrete examples of people offering hospitality and a cup of water to others.

"And I urge you to offer God's grace when you see your neighbor in need…"

This is why I go to church, to learn insights that I can use in the following week. Just saying.

For dinner this evening, Caroline, Grammy and returned to Buttersburg

For dinner this evening, Caroline, Grammy and returned to Buttersburg. It was too fun.

It is great to be alive in the year 2017. Jim Rowe had posted on my Facebook page that he had baked a cherry custard pie. I had planned to stay in the office and work through dinner with a sandwich. However, with the information that a cherry custard pie was available, Caroline weighed-in, the presses stopped and all plans were changed.

Jim Rowe greeted us at the door, and seated us in the back. We had a great dinner. Caroline ordered salmon cakes, Grammy got the soft shell crab again and I went for the meatloaf. Meatloaf is a specialty dish for both Caroline and me, so we know meatloaf – and it was the best.

Our server was Tessa Howard – the best.

For dessert, Caroline and Grammy had the cherry custard pie and I had the carrot cake. It was to die for.

Frank Tunzi came out from the kitchen to say hi, and to remind us that he made the flowers for our wedding. He even remembered all the details. (I know flowers – it was my business for 25-years.)

And for a bonus, we got to see Stephen Howard, who was helping-out in the kitchen of whom, I was just reminded, is Larry L Brumfield's son. It is a small world. It's great to live in Carroll County. Love, love, love Buttersburg Inn. July 1, 2017 Sat.

July 29th fundraising event at the Applebee’s in Westminster
supports Carroll County NAACP education fund

Westminster, June 30, 2017 - - Attached please find a flyer
of our annual Carroll County NAACP “Continuing Education Grant” fundraiser at
Applebee's in Westminster on Saturday, July 29th at 8 a.m. until 10:00 a.m.

Every year, along with the Pehl Foundation, the Carroll
County NAACP gives at least one $1,000 Continuing Education Award to a high
achieving student in Carroll County Public Schools planning to go to a trade
school, college, or university. The money raised from the Applebee’s event goes
directly into the CC NAACP continuing education fund.

Tickets are only $10/person – and children under 12 are
$5.00 apiece.

Please mark your calendars now and begin informing your
family and friends.

The GPS address is: Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar,
634 Baltimore Boulevard, Westminster, MD 21157

I have attended several fundraisers at Applebee’s over the
years for a number of different community organizations. It is actually a
really unique experience in that the community organization that benefits from
the fundraiser actually takes over the restaurant. Essentially every booth is
filled with a family that you either know or want to get to know because you
share a common interest in supporting an organization that supports the greater
community. It’s like a big extended family get together.

Looking forward to seeing you on July 29th, 2017

This year’s celebration of Juneteenth in Carroll Co. featured a documentary on the black churches in the area

This year’s celebration of Juneteenth in Carroll Co.
featured a documentary on the black churches in the area

In the last several meetings of the Carroll County NAACP, we
have discussed Juneteenth.

June 30th, 2017 by Kevin E. Dayhoff

Westminster Md. - This year the Juneteenth celebration in
Carroll County, June 19th, 2017 at the Carroll Arts Center, featured a special
premiere screening of “The Rock of
our Ancestors
,” a Community Media Center (CMC) produced documentary about
the origins, history, and impact of Carroll County’s small, African-American
Churches. For more information go here: http://www.carrollmediacenter.org/the-rock-of-our-ancestors/

According to the April 27, 2017 minutes of the Carroll
County NAACP: “It was mentioned that the Community Media Center http://www.carrollmediacenter.org/
and the CC NAACP will partner in an upcoming event involving a movie that has
been made about the history of the Black churches in Carroll County.

The event will take place this year on June 19th, 2017 at
the Carroll Arts Center http://www.carrollcountyartscouncil.org/index.asp.

For those not familiar with Juneteenth, it is a celebration
of the news of the Emancipation Proclamation reaching Galveston Texas and being
publicly announced by Major General Gordon Granger on June 19th, 1865 - two and
a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation had been
signed on January 1, 1863.

To watch
a short trailer of the documentary
film
on the black churches in Carroll County go here: https://youtu.be/ozGHZczQt1k

According to Sherry Taylor with the Carroll Community Media
center, “Throughout our history, the
church has been the cornerstone around which people have gathered to build
their communities. It is the rock of faith that sustains us in times of
uncertainty, the foundation that supports us as we grow, and a touchstone to guide
us day-by-day.

“But, some of our
small churches are finding themselves on shifting sand, facing an uncertain
future. Shrinking congregations, competing interests, and financial pressures
create significant challenges in their survival.

“Carroll County’s
houses of worship not only serve as a source of strength and comfort, but also
have been vessels of history; some tracing their roots back over 100 years.

“For these
parishioners, the loss of the church, is the loss of their legacy. Today, it’s
not just the building or the congregation that is at risk, it is the very
heritage of their ancestors and the identity of an entire community that is at
stake.”

I recently wrote an article on Juneteenth that appeared in
the Carroll County Times - “Time
Flies: June 19 is Juneteenth Independence Day
,” by Kevin Dayhoff June 16,
2017:

“June 19, is "Juneteenth," a relatively
little-known holiday in approximately 45 of the 50 states, and the District of
Columbia. In June 2011, when I first wrote about the importance of Juneteenth
and advocated that Maryland recognize 'Juneteenth Independence Day,' only 38
states observed the holiday. Today, according to some recent research, Hawaii,
Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota and South Dakota still do not recognize
the ‘19th of June.’ …”

For lunch Sat, June 10, 2017, Grammy, Caroline and I ate at local Korean Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich

For lunch Sat, June 10, 2017, Grammy, Caroline and I ate at local Korean Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich in Newport News, Virginia.

We got off 64 at Rte 17 north, exit 259a. At the intersection of Rte 17 and Old Oyster Point Road, we found "Straight Outta Philly," at 12:15. Lunch took an hour. We left at 1:15 and resumed driving up Rte 17.

I got a Philly Cheese Steak Pizza. I am not kidding. Grammy actually got a Philly Cheese Steak. Caroline got the Korean Beef Bolgogi, with three Mondoos and no Kimchi. All of our food was quite good.

The restaurant was clean, well-lit and nicely decorated in a vinyl record musical theme. I especially appreciated several home-made signs that the server explained, were made by a local regular customer.

One sign explained that 'Tipping' was not a faraway Chinese city… We sat under a very large neon sign with the restaurant's name.

We always take a great deal of pride in finding locally-owned restaurants for eating when we are on the road. We like supporting local small businesses. More often than not, they have a story to tell, the food is great and the restaurant employees and servers are fun.

Straight Outta Philly was great. Our server was a local girl, who wants to go to school to be an ultrasound technician. While we were there a number of local folks came to eat, including two post office employees.

Today is the anniversary of D-Day in France during WWII

Today is the anniversary of D-Day in France during WWII

Tuesday, June 6, 2017

My morning conversation with Mrs. Sun. Mrs. Sun struggled to awaken this morning. But a fresh cup of coffee finally did the trick. #OBX June 6, 2017. I got up early at 5:45 - 6 a.m.

Today is the anniversary of D-Day in France during WWII.

Yes - as I listen to the waves, I remember that today is the anniversary of D-Day in France during WWII.

And I listen in silence so that I may hear the waves clearly speak for all the silent voices of the past.

I say a morning prayer for the folks many decades ago, who made it possible that I can sit by a tranquil seashore all these years later. I do not take it for granted and I will never forget. I pay homage to those who made it possible. Many of them left a simple young life, full of the future and a life of possibilities ahead of them, from my hometown - and they never came home.

I say a prayer for my Dad who served in the Pacific. I say a prayer for my friends who served in Vietnam while I was stationed stateside. All I could was worry - and pray. I say a prayer for my friends who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.  I say a prayer for the continued loss of life in London to the forces of sheer madness.

God bless those brave souls who served at D-Day, for their sense of duty and for their sacrifice so many decades ago. I am simply at a loss to imagine the terror, sense of duty, fate and destiny, and the fear.

All we can do now is pray and live a full life - to do honor for their sacrifice. And never-ever forget...
