Top Ten Tips: How to survive a relationship with a writer #partylikeajournalist

I love #6… #5 is also really important. But #4 has always made me wonder.

Is there anything else to add?

The image is attributed to www.writerswrite.co.za. A big thanks to www.writerswrite.co.za - which is, fascinatingly enough, a website that offers writing classes in South Africa. What a great idea. Sign me up for a class. And btw, the website is really good. Check it out.

Elbert Green Hubbard, June 19, 1856 - May 7, 1915

“God will not look you over for medals, degrees or diplomas but for scars.”
― Elbert Hubbard

"To avoid criticism, do nothing, say nothing, and be nothing." - Elbert Hubbard http://kevindayhoffart.blogspot.com/2015/06/american-writer-elbert-green-hubbard.html

May 7, 2015 Kevin E. Dayhoff - It was 100 years ago that our nation’s literary, cultural and artistic community mourned the death of Elbert Green Hubbard, June 19, 1856 - May 7, 1915, an American philosopher, artist, and writer.

He died on the RMS Lusitania on May 7, 1915, when the ship was sunk by the Germans off the coast of Ireland.

He is well-known for publishing two satirical and witty magazines, “The Philistine,” and “The Fra.”

In addition to remembering him for his quotes, I remember him best as the author of “A Message to Garcia.” One of my favorite quotes is by Mr. Hubbard: “God will not look you over for medals degrees or diplomas, but for scars.”

Not to be overlooked was the not too insignificant matter that he was federally prosecuted and subsequently convicted on January 11, 1913, for circulating "objectionable" matter in violation of the postal laws - - every writer’s nightmare who fears the consequences of writing material that government officials deem not in line with the official viewpoint of the government at the time. Fortunately he received a pardon by President Woodrow Wilson.

Mr. Hubbard is also known for his actions onboard the Lusitania on May 7, 1915, after the ship was struck by a torpedo.

According to a letter written to his son, Elbert Hubbard II dated March 12, 1916, by Ernest C. Cowper, a survivor of the sinking of the Lusitania, found in the papers of Mr. Hubbard collected by the "Elbert Hubbard Papers Manuscript Group #17" at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania; page 3 and 4:

“I cannot say specifically where your father and Mrs. Hubbard were when the torpedoes hit, but I can tell you just what happened after that. They emerged from their room, which was on the port side of the vessel, and came on to the boat-deck. Neither appeared perturbed in the least. Your father and Mrs. Hubbard linked arms—the fashion in which they always walked the deck—and stood apparently wondering what to do. I passed him with a baby which I was taking to a lifeboat when he said, 'Well, Jack, they have got us. They are a damn sight worse than I ever thought they were.'

“They did not move very far away from where they originally stood. As I moved to the other side of the ship, in preparation for a jump when the right moment came, I called to him, 'What are you going to do?' and he just shook his head, while Mrs. Hubbard smiled and said, 'There does not seem to be anything to do.'

“The expression seemed to produce action on the part of your father, for then he did one of the most dramatic things I ever saw done. He simply turned with Mrs. Hubbard and entered a room on the top deck, the door of which was open, and closed it behind him. It was apparent that his idea was that they should die together, and not risk being parted on going into the water.”

Exclusive: China warns U.S. surveillance plane - CNNPolitics.com:
By Jim Sciutto, Chief National Security Correspondent
Updated 8:32 PM ET, Wed May 20, 2015

"High stakes surveillance over the South China Sea 03:47

Above the South China Sea (CNN)The Chinese navy issued warnings eight times as a U.S. surveillance plane on Wednesday swooped over islands that Beijing is using to extend its zone of influence.

The series of man-made islands and the massive Chinese military build-up on them have alarmed the Pentagon, which is carrying out the surveillance flights in order to make clear the U.S. does not recognize China's territorial claims. The militarized islands have also alarmed America's regional allies.

Former CIA Deputy Director Michael Morell told CNN's Erin Burnett Wednesday night that the confrontation indicates there is "absolutely" a risk of the U.S. and China going to war sometime in the future.

HOW TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD

HOW TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD

March 25, 2003

Step one: Buy a date-book.  You have to stay organized!  The closer you get to world domination, the crazier your schedule is going to get.

Step two: Save your pennies. Remember Teddy Roosevelt's "Gunboat diplomacy"? Well, guns and boats cost money, and you're going to need at least one of each to take over the world.

Step three: Keep a journal. You can't expect others to be comfortable with your sovereignty if you're uncomfortable with yourself.  Take a little time every day to reflect and you'll discover things about yourself that you never suspected.

Step four: Go to the mall with some friends.  Whenever you walk into a store, have them nudge strangers and say, "Hey, isn't that the guy who just took over the world?"

Step five: Make self-deprecating jokes.  People like conquerors that can laugh at themselves.

Step six: Always carry a pen.  You never know when you might need to sign something or stab someone.

Step seven: Pay attention to world events.  "What's that?  Indonesia's dictator was over-thrown?  That might be a good place for me to start taking over the world."  These are the types of things you should be thinking.  Then you should think, "What styles of clothing are popular in Indonesia?  Should I take a parka or a T-shirt?"  Pack appropriately and your trip will go more smoothly.  Will you need sunscreen?

Step eight: Stay limber.  How can you expect to take over the world if you can't even touch your toes?

Step nine: Carry a clipboard.  It makes you look official.

Step ten: Be unconventional.  Building a massive army and invading neighboring nations is one way to take over the world, but is it the only way?  Maybe you're good at drawing, maybe you can sew.  Find your strengths and use them.

Step eleven: Don't forget to smile!

Bela Bartok: A sonata in two movements | The Economist:

A musical biography with something for everyone

http://www.economist.com/news/books-and-arts/21649444-musical-biography-something-everyone-sonata-two-movements?fsrc=scn/tw/te/pe/Bartok

Apr 25th 2015

"Bela Bartok. By David Cooper. Yale University Press; 436 pages; £25. To be published in America by Yale in June.

ALONG with Franz Liszt, Bela Bartok, who died in 1945, is regarded as one of Hungary’s greatest composers. Many consider his six string quartets, completed between 1908 and 1939, to be second only to Beethoven’s.

Though not as atonal as the work of many of his contemporaries, such as Arnold Schoenberg and Alban Berg, Bartok’s compositions can be heavy-going, combining influences from Hungarian folk, jazz and Arabic music. In this weighty tome, David Cooper of Leeds University digs into Bartok’s life, interlacing his discussion of the compositions with wider discussions of politics and culture."

Humbly watching non-journalists driving biggest stories with digital tools

From cell phone video to podcasts, citizens and advocates shape national agenda

But what's left for mainstream media?

The past week has been a lesson in journalistic humility for me.

After a career of thinking and writing about how the kind of mainstream journalistic institutions at which I worked set the local and national agenda, I had a moment of clarity with a voice in my head saying, "Not so much any more, my self-important friend."

[…]

… I couldn't help but think how much the onscreen story of this police shooting was again the result of what was done by a single citizen with a cellphone — not by a network or a cable news channel with all their multimillion-dollar talent and resources….

[…]

Chaudry acknowledges that "journalists definitely have different roles than activists and advocates."
