Eagle Archive: 50 years later, King's letter reminds us of a journey too long

Eagle Archive: 50 years later, King's letter reminds us of a journey too long By Kevin E. Dayhoff, 8:53 p.m. EDT, April 21, 2013

On April 16, 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. penned a 7,000-word letter from a jail cell in Birmingham, Ala. The letter came in response to a statement by eight white Alabama pastors on April 12, 1963, titled "A Call for Unity."

King had been arrested April 12 for demonstrating in defiance of an injunction issued against the Birmingham Campaign of marches and sit-ins, which had begun on April 3.

The white clergy members argued that the cause of civil rights was better contested in the courts than the streets of Birmingham.

King's response has become famous in the study of persuasive rhetoric in which, in part, he suggested that the "wait" requested by the white pastors — who argued that 1963 was not the time for King to pursue equal rights — really meant "never."

King also put forth that non-violent civil disobedience was an appropriate response to unjust laws, and that "one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws."

The letter was the origin of the now-famous argument that "injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere," and quotes Chief Justice Earl Warren, "Justice too long delayed is justice denied."

His letter also referenced a few other notables, such as Paul of Tarsus, Reinhold Niebuhr, Socrates, Paul Tillich and Thomas Aquinas.
In addition to being a man of letters, King is, of course, he's best known for speaking — the most famous example being his "I Have a Dream" speech in Washington on Aug. 28, 1963.

Closer to home, we should note that a setback to the cause of King and many of his era occurred on Nov. 14, 1963, at the lunchroom of Sykesville Mayor Bernard McDougall's drug store, where Jean S. Evans and Bailey Conaway were refused service… Read more: http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/carroll/westminster/ph-ce-eagle-archive-0421-20130417,0,4791772.story

Hot Yoga Shot at Center Street Yoga - Westminster, MD

Earlier this year I was the photographer for a Carroll Magazine story, Eastern Approach to Physical Fitness. Talented instructor Courtney A. met up with me to share her knowledge of Hot Vinyasa, commonly called Hot Yoga. We had an awesome session together, and I loved learning about and trying the poses with her. Following are a selection of favorite shots from 40 or so poses we documented... http://kellyheckphotography.blogspot.com/2013/04/hot-yoga-shot-at-center-street-yoga.html

Eagle Archive: Ralph Condon, 85, retired Carroll County businessman

Eagle Archive: Ralph Condon, 85, retired Carroll County businessman By Kevin E. Dayhoff, April 3, 2013 http://tinyurl.com/c8oqsto

Ralph A. Condon, a Carroll County community leader and businessman, died March 27 at age 85. He was a Navy veteran who served in World War II. He was married to Ava Rakes Condon for 65 years.

Condon was born in Taylorsville on Sept. 28, 1927. In the early 1950s, he began working as an auto mechanic at a shop way off the beaten path on a rutted-dirt road a mile or so off of Manchester Road, Route 27, near the present-day intersection with Route 482.

He subsequently founded Condon's Auto Parts in 1954. The business is currently operated by the third generation of his family.

In 1959, Manchester Road was re-aligned and rebuilt in such a manner that all of the sudden the auto recycling yard was exposed to public view. This was in the days before zoning and for several years, there were no problems.

The operation minded its own business and wasn't bothering anyone, said Condon several years ago in an interview.

But peace and tranquilly came to an end to his once upon a time out of sight business. New folks in the county began to complain, and legal problems with the county started. Never mind he was there first.

In the late 1960s, Condon decided the right thing to do was to move his business farther away from the road – out of sight of the public. That was easier said than done, though. As they say, no good deed goes unpunished… http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/neighborhoods/westminster/ph-ce-eagle-archive-0407-20130403,0,5284705.story
