Lawrence Eagleburger: The Real Deal
Many who have closely follow the intrigues and personalities of the United States Foreign Service and the implementation of American foreign policy for the last 50 years were saddened to learn of the death last Saturday of former Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger.

Although I first learned of his passing on SwamplandThe Washington Post has since reported that Secretary Eagleburger “died of pneumonia at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. He was 80 and had lived outside Charlottesville since 1990.

Several astute news accounts got it right. “He did not fit the image of the office. He was hugely overweight. He chain-smoked cigarettes, sometimes with an aspirator to ease chronic asthma. He was afflicted with a muscle disease,” and an old knee injury and walked with the assistance of a cane.

He was blunt, shrewd, and from reading about him and his exploits over the years, often ‘crazy’ like a fox when it came to maneuvering the byzantine intrigues of personality driven power-mongers of inter-governmental relations...  http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=4445

Explore Carroll: DAYHOFF: Memorial Day follows long tradition in this city, this year

There are few instances in which past and present converge so completely as Memorial Day. Despite the record-breaking temperatures, Carroll County came out in full force to commemorate the observances on May 30 in Westminster...

My childhood friend and Westminster High class of 1971 classmate, retired Army Sgt. Maj. Mel Hoffman, gave the keynote speech. We are all quite proud of our Westminster native son and his service to our country.

The benediction was delivered by Pastor Kevin C. Clementson, co-senior pastor, and his wife, Pastor Martha Clementson, of Grace Lutheran Church, Westminster. The national anthem was sung by Jennifer Gambino, with the Westminster Municipal Band...

OUT and ABOUT:
PopUp Art at 7 East” exhibit in the storefront windows at 7 E. Main Street has ended.  But that doesn’t mean the art is gone!  Off Track Art is still showing works at our regular gallery space across the way, at Liberty Street and Main, through the purple door withCarousel Stained Glass.  Do you like seeing “Pop-Up Art” spaces?  OTA is looking for another empty storefront to fill with art to encourage revitalization of our downtown area.
Off Track Art artists at Room For Friends:  OTA’s Kevin Dayhoff is the featured artist showing through end of June.  Then in July see OTA’s Mary Decker’s work during July-August.  Please visit their web site at www.roomforfriends.com or www.facebook.com/roomforfriendswestminster or call 443-474-8514.  The opening receptions coincide with those of Off Track Art every other month, so park once and stop by both venues!   (Check reception calendar dates above.)
Mary Decker is showing her art on July 16 & 17 at First Floor Arts in Greetings & Readings in the Hunt Valley Towne Centre. Greetings & Readings is an upscale gift, book and card store that also has a small cafĂ©.  Formerly located at the corner of Loch Raven Blvd. and Goucher Blvd. for many years, it has moved to Hunt Valley Towne Centre.
Mary’s wonderful floral art can also be seen the South Carroll Fine Arts League exhibition at Fairhaven, June 1 thru July 15, Sykesville, MD... and...
Kevin Dayhoff, too, is represented in the South Carroll Fine Arts League exhibition at Fairhaven, June 1 thru July 15, Sykesville, MD; it is open to the public with approximately 50 paintings and photographs, original oil, watercolor or acrylic paintings available for sale. In addition, prints (framed or unframed) may be available by contacting the artists.
Linda Van Hart spent some of her springtime in creativity abroad, collecting plant specimens from throughout Europe and creating patterns along the way to inspire new botanical designs.  Her drawings and photos of alpacas and llamas will be used in a business card design, on T shirts and a banner, as an entire identity package for a Swiss business, Lamahof.
Linda is also teaching “Sculpting Natural Forms,” and has organized a full day for metalsmiths, blacksmiths and bead freaks.  Check out the site and register for www.commongroundonthehill.org.  Great opportunities to study with national and international masters of art and craft, vocal and instrumental musicians, dancers, poets and writers, July 3-15.  The Roots Music and Arts Festis July 9-10, tickets available.  Don't miss out on this fun local event.
IN the GALLERY at OTA:
Original painting, drawing, collage, mixed media, photography, cut-paper, book art, sculpture, jewelry.
NEW WORK:  Visit Off Track Art and catch them in the act...
Gail Elwell has begun THE THREE HOUR PROJECT:  Is it possible to create a piece of art in three hours?  Gail thinks so.  “I enjoy making art in the gallery.  I think ‘Made Here’ art plays an important part in a successful cooperative art gallery.  However, it would be impracticable to transport work the will take months to complete.  So.... a new exploration is born:  ‘THE THREE HOUR PROJECT,’ to be created during the three hours I sit the gallery, a small collage out of five new, uncut sources.  Fresh images to look at, new connections to make, new books to cut up!  An opportunity to take chances, sharpen design skills, and revel in the pleasure of art play!  “I KNOW” AND “ALMOST” starts the series. They were taken from Horizon magazines spanning 1964 & 65.  I plan on creating two a month, so visit the gallery often.”
Bob Waddell is continuing with the mixed media "Aviary" series and another series that is only sketchbook worthy at this time which involves weaving together different but related images in what he’s referring to as "Aerial Views with
an elevation twist."  He’ll be busy with these on-going works while at the coop during the rest of May and June.  Gallery visitors are welcome to stop by and see work in progress.
Mary Decker is working on new watercolor flower portraits.  Also, after inspiration from a trip to the American Visionary Arts Museum and an art challenge from fellow artists Mary be working on a self-portrait done in the tone of the AVAM.
Our Mid-year reinstallation happens this summer, so June is your last chance to see what’s been in the gallery.  And July will show new works and new arrangements with many fresh-made works. (pictured:  new work by C.Sawdey)
Also find:  decorated journals & boxes, earrings, bracelets, necklaces, greeting cards, scarves.
OTA Says Farewell:
Pam Zappardino, who is leaving Off Track Art end of June, will be sorely missed by those who know the enormity of her contributions.  Pam had been an integral part at launching the artists’ cooperative gallery that became Off Track Art.  She offered much expertise as well as many ideas and talents toward the establishment and success of this group.  As we wish her all the best on her departure, we also look forward to seeing Pam continue her creative output, her paintings, photography, and her writings in other outlets.
