The Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Tampa Bay Florida

The Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Tampa Bay Florida

February 20, 2010 by Kevin Dayhoff

Two photos of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Tampa Bay Florida, as viewed from the Manatee County shore rest area. Photographed February 20, 2010 by Kevin Dayhoff

The five-and-a-half mile, $244 million structure which spans from Terra Ceia - Bradenton in Manatee County to St. Petersburg, Florida is the world's longest cable-stayed concrete bridge. The roadway is built to provide clearance of 190 feet above the water where the bridge spans the shipping channel.

It was opened to traffic on April 20, 1987 and is a part of the I-275 - US 19 road network.

A previous bridge, which stood in approximately the same position in the bay, was built in 1954, was partially destroyed in the morning of May 9, 1980, when a freighter, the “Summit Venture,” collided with the bridge resulting in 35 people losing their lives.

Unfortunately, the magnificent structure has also attracted personal tragedies. As many as 127 persons have jumped to their death from the bridge according to a St. Petersburg Times newspaper article by Jamie Jones, published October 6, 2003: “Skyway safeguards don't deter jumpers - At least 10 people have jumped already this year, despite crisis phones and 24-hour patrols.” What a paradox that such a beautiful structure would be used for something so unpleasant.

According to a report by Jose Garcia, "The Skyway Bridge - Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow,” for the Florida Department of Transportation, the bridge rates Travel Channel’s No. 3 of “Top 10 Bridges.”

It is not to be missed…

Historic 1857 quilt inspired by the politics and faith of its era

EAGLE ARCHIVE By Kevin Dayhoff: Historic 1857 quilt inspired by the politics and faith of its era

In a recent column I noted that one of the quilts in Nancy Gibson's presentation, "Pieces of the Past: An Overview of Carroll County Quilts," at the Historical Society of Carroll County on Jan. 19 was the 1857 Buckey eagle quilt. I've had a people ask me for more information about this historic quilt, so here goes:

This quilt is part of the HSCC's extensive textile collection, and was given to the society by Vivian Englar Barnes.

On Oct. 8, 1995, historian Jay Graybeal wrote about another lecture on quilts at the historical society, which took place that year.

Graybeal noted, "Because women traditionally provided the family's clothing and bedding, they tended to preserve textiles and pass them down to the next generation.

"For this reason most of the historical society's textile collection was donated by women."

According to Gibson, Margaret Buckey made the Buckey eagle quilt in 1857 when she was 20 years old. She made it a year before her marriage to Elhanan Englar, who was a farmer from New Windsor.

In 1995, this quilt and Buckey's sewing table were displayed at the Daughters of the American Revolution Museum, in Washington, Graybeal wrote.

Buckey "grew up in Frederick County a few miles across the county border from New Windsor and Union Bridge," and was a member of the family for which Buckeystown in Frederick County was named," noted Gibson during her talk -- which also celebrated the county's 173rd birthday.

"What makes this quilt unique is that it's possible that it was a political statement," said Gibson.

"Eagles are popular designs on Maryland quilts in the early 19th century," she said. "You see eagles on furniture, silver, ceramics, as well.

(And newspapers, too.)

"Remember that quilt makers got their designs from everyday objects around them. It was not until the third quarter of the 19th century that patterns were published nationally.

Gibson noted that the eagle may have been inspired by the anti-slavery or Know-Nothing Party, which was popular during the 1856 election.

"Events sponsored by this party were heavily advertised in the Carroll County newspapers and sometimes included an eagle similar to the one Margaret used on her quilt," she said.

Gibson said that according to Margaret Buckey's obituary, she was a member of the Brethren Church for 68 years. Elders of the church -- including her uncle, Daniel Saylor, leader of a congregation at Beaver Dam where Margaret had worshipped prior to her marriage -- were politically active, especially against slavery.

Margaret and her husband joined the Pipe Creek Brethren Church where they are both buried.

But they left us all the quilt -- another piece of the fabric of our community history.

I managed, after many attempts, to photograph a tarpon at Robbie's Marina, http://www.robbies.com/, 77522 Overseas Highway, Islamorada, FL 33036-3813, (305) 664-9814 – just as it opened its mouth to grab a snack from my wife’s hand.

http://www.robbies.com/tarpon.htm

“According to Robbie’s web site history: “Robbie and his wife Mona started feeding Scarface 18 years ago. Scarface appeared floundering in the shallow waters near the dock; Robbie saw the struggling tarpon and, thinking it had swum too shallow and gotten stuck on the bank, went out into the water to free it. He lifted the fish and saw that the right side of its jaw was torn open. Hoping to revive the tarpon, Robbie placed it in the oxygen-rich shrimp tank and called old Doc Roach. The doctor showed up with his wife's mattress needles and some twine, and Scarface became the first known tarpon with stitches. After several days of force-feeding, Scarface showed good recovery and weight gain; six months later he was released into the waters off the dock. Afterwards, Scarface continued to frequent the docks; sometimes bringing a friend. Soon more and more of the fish began to appear.

“Today, the tradition continues, with visitors from all across the world coming to marvel at the spectacle and offer these magnificent creatures a snack.”

The web site, http://www.robbies.com/, explains, “Robbie’s rests peacefully among coconut palms with shimmering views of the nearby islands where the unspoiled Florida Bay and the exquisite Atlantic Ocean converge. Cooled by the gentle trade winds, and cantilevered over crystal clear aquamarine waters, with a private sandy beach, one cannot help but understand why so many artists have chosen this place to immortalize in paintings. Robbie’s comprises quaint and discreet pavilions surrounded by lush tropical landscaping offering a taste of everything the Keys have to offer.

“An eclectic fusion of nostalgic Florida Keys understated elegance with the more modern conveniences of shopping for everything from beads to fine art and hammocks, and dining at eateries from sidewalk vendors to five star cuisine overlooking the water, in one of Islamorada’s most discreetly placed restaurants—even the most discriminating of visitors will find themselves captivated by everything Robbie’s has to offer…”

Green Turtle Inn Florida Keys then and now

Green Turtle Inn Florida Keys then and now - 1935 and February 6, 2010 By Kevin Dayhoff

On our way to Key West on Saturday, February 6, 2010, we waited until we were on our way on the Route 1, known as “The Overseas Highway,” before we looked for a local place to eat.

The Overseas Highway connect 29 of the 200 islands we know as the archipelago, the Florida Keys.

The route was originally established as a railroad built by Henry Flagler. A horrific hurricane struck the Keys on September 2, 1935 and irreparably wrecked the railroad.

The railroad was replaced with the Overseas Highway for automobile traffic, which opened in 1938.

We found the Green Turtle Inn after traveling about 20 miles and thoroughly enjoyed our lunch.

According to the web site for the restaurant, http://www.greenturtlekeys.com/: “Green Turtle Inn Restaurant / We have been a Keys tradition since 1947 / Located at MM 81.5 Islamorada, Florida Keys / Phone: 305-664-2006 / Email: info@greenturtlekeys.com.”

John P. Murtha - A Complex and Complicated Life

The Tentacle www.thetentacle.com: John P. Murtha - A Complex and Complicated Life by Kevin Dayhoff http://tinyurl.com/ygn5cp7

http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=3598

John P. Murtha, the Democrat congressman from Pennsylvania, died at Virginia Hospital Center Monday at the age of 77 after complications from gall-bladder surgery.

For some, Congressman Murtha burst upon the scene to become a household name and patriot, who spoke ‘truth to power’ against the Iraq war during the administration of President George W. Bush.

For others, Congressman Murtha was a complicated and complex, hypocritical, knee-jerk opportunistic lefty whose ‘principled’ objections to the war on terrorism quickly became irresponsible in tenor and tone.

Exacerbating the criticisms of Congressman Murtha was the perception that he mysteriously lost his voice of opposition to the war efforts once President Barack Obama was sworn into office.

Funny how that happens.

Even The Washington Post, not overwhelmingly known for going out of its way to say anything particularly unkind about Democrats, identified him in its lede as the “master of pork-barrel politics … considered one of the most influential on Capitol Hill,” and “a Vietnam veteran who staunchly supported military spending…”

Mr. Murtha held the seat in Congress from the 12th Congressional District in southwestern Pennsylvania for 19 terms. He first won the seat in a special election in 1974 after Republican Congressman John P. Saylor died in office.

Even a cursory review of his life and accomplishments reveals that Mr. Murtha was a gentleman for whom there is much to be admired and respected.

Certainly not to be overlooked is the fact that Mr. Murtha continued his service to our country by being the first Vietnam veteran to take a seat in Congress.

The road to Vietnam and Congress actually began as far back as the early 1950s.
