Soaring steel sculpture by preeminent American artist Mark di Suvero at Brooklyn Bridge Park

BROOKLYN, N.Y.- Storm King Art Center, Brooklyn Bridge Park, and The Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy have announced the installation at the Park of a soaring steel sculpture by preeminent American artist Mark di Suvero. Organized and implemented by Storm King, working closely with the Park and the Conservancy, the presentation of the work, titled Yoga (1991), represents the first initiative in an anticipated ongoing arts program there.

The roughly thirty-foot-tall composition is sited on the Bridge View Lawn at the Park’s Pier 1, overlooking the East River. It comprises an I-beam-bent into a U-shape that rocks and pivots on a stainless-steel pole, itself topped by an O-shaped element. The sculpture creates changing shadows and perspectives as the I-beam variously points to the harbor, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Governors Island, and beyond, while the O may remind viewers of a ship’s po ... More

Half a century ago, people in the mountains of the North Carolina and Southwest Virginia celebrated Christmas quite differently than the way most of us do now, holding two weeks of informal house parties that were filled with old time fiddle music, song and dance - a tradition they called "Breaking Up Christmas."  These Christmas parties ran through and ended with Old Christmas, January 6th.  Walt Michael & Company will "break up Christmas" with you this evening as they share their wide-ranging repertoire of tunes and songs that reflect the rich musical heritage of the Appalachians.  The traditional folk musics of Scotland, Ireland, England and Africa made their way into the remote mountain hollers, later emerging as an integrated American musical genre that continues to evolve. Fluxus - An art movement begun in 1961/1962, which flourished throughout the 1960s, and into the 1970s. Characterized by a strongly Dadaist attitude, Fluxus promoted artistic experimentation mixed with social and political activism, an often celebrated anarchistic change. Although Germany was its principal location, Fluxus was an international avant-gardemovement active in major Dutch, English, French, Swedish, and American cities. Its participants were a divergent group of individualists whose most common theme was their delight inspontaneity and humor. 


Fluxus members avoided any limiting art theories, and spurned pure aesthetic objectives, producing such mixed-media works as found poems, mail art, silent orchestras, and collages of such readily available materials as scavanged posters, newspapers, and other ephemera. Their activities resulted in many events or situations, often called "Aktions" — works challenging definitions of art as focused on objects -- performances, guerilla or street theater, concerts of electronic music — many of them similar to what in America were known as Happenings.

Joseph Beuys was born May 12, 1921, in Krefeld, Germany. 

During his school years in Kleve, Beuys was exposed to the work of Achilles Moortgat, whose studio he often visited, and was inspired by the sculptures of Wilhelm Lehmbruck. Beuys began to study medicine in 1940, but his studies were interrupted when he joined the army and served as a fighter pilot. 

During a mission in 1943, he was badly injured when his plane crashed in a desolate region of south Russia. This experience would resonate in all of his later work...

Peter Plant is the gallery guest at Off Track Art for November and December.  Peter is a studio and plein air artist who has worked in a traditional style of painting in acrylics.  Over the past two years however, he has branched out and experimented with a variety of mixed media techniques which have broadened his experience in both studio and plein air work.  His studio work has included wet-in-wet acrylics on watercolor paper, images drawn with markers, as well as poured and splattered paint backgrounds.  Plant’s goal is to explore media and techniques that enhance the creative experience while presenting realistic images to the viewer.  Pearlescent inks, Sharpie markers, watercolor pencils, and colored pencils have all found their way into his art.

Gail Elwell, a partner of Off Track Art, shows her collage series, “52 Weeks.”  This exhibit at Birdie’s Cafe on Main Street in Westminster, runs November through December.  Gail worked steadily for an entire year creating a collage every week, hence the exhibit’s title.
