Off Track Art's July show celebrates several former partners and their most recent work!

June 30, 2023 4-7 Off Track Art opening reception:

Nolly Gelsinger: Our artists’ cooperative Off Track Art was incorporated in 2009 by a great field of local energetic artists.

For the month of July, Off Track Art is checking in with some of our former partners who spent time with us in the recent (and not so recent!) past.

We refer to each one as a “Partner Emeritus” to honor their status. They are all dear to us and we appreciate how these partners helped to pave the way for the continued success of Off Track Art.

Specifically, we wanted to see how some of our former partners, who are involved in their former or new communities, are now using their outstanding creativity as their lives have evolved in additional directions.

We caught up with seven of them-their names may be familiar to you- and asked them to update their biography with us, bring any artwork they have been doing, display it on our lobby walls, and offer it for sale for the month of July.

The show runs from Friday June 30 until Sunday, July 30. Our visiting artists are: Sherrill Cooper, Kevin Dayhoff, Gail Elwell, Sarah Gawens, Thomas Sterner, Robert Waddell, and Pamela Zappardino!

ATTEND a FREE gallery reception to MEET THE ARTISTS Friday June 30 4-7 PM Gallery hours are Fridays 12-4pm, Saturdays 10am-4pm, and Sundays 12-4pm. In addition to this lobby show, see our ongoing display of 8 artist partners and 20 artist consigners!

Kevin Dayhoff is a Westminster native who lives on Uniontown Road with his wife, Caroline Babylon. Dayhoff has been a self-employed artist and businessman since 1974 and has been exhibiting art since 1981. In the tradition of his friend and mentor The Rev. Dr. Ira Zepp, Dayhoff has served for many years as non-denominational multi-disciplinary fire, police, and military chaplain.

As a landscape designer, collage, mixed media assemblage, sculpture artist, writer, and photographer; he has had a life-long pervasive interest in color and spatial relationships and the juxtapositioning of incongruent objects.

After graduating from Westminster High School in 1971, he served in the United States Marine Corps Reserves for two years as he attended Elon College and served in the Civil Rights movement in the south - before leaving college in 1973 to pursue a career in writing and art.

In 1974, Dayhoff started farming; raising nursery stock; and started his own business as a landscape designer, contractor, and nurseryman. He retired in 1999.

In recent years, he has enjoyed exploring and utilizing technology - digital photography, the scanner, and the computer – as a creative process.

In 1981 Dayhoff had his first art show at the Theatre Project in Baltimore, followed by a group show. "Four at 409" at Gallery 409, in Baltimore in October 1982. It was in the 1982 time period that Dayhoff met Carroll County artists Linda Van Hart and Robert J. Waddell while he was exploring photocopier art.

In the past he has collaborated with a number of artist groups, including The Consortionists with Linda Van Hart and Robert J. Waddell from 1983 to 1989; the United Art Workers from 1989 to 1991 and most recently with Off Track Art from December 2008 to June 2013. He has displayed art at Western Maryland – McDaniel College on a number of occasions. Beginning in 1988, Dayhoff participated for many years in (幸円 良介 - Ryosuke Cohen’s long-running “Brain Cell” – “Fractal” series, from Osaka, Japan.

Dayhoff has been a short story and technical writer since 1968. Since 2004 he has been writing as a newspaper reporter for the Baltimore Sun Media in addition to a number of regional publications.

Dayhoff has been a member – and displayed art with the Carroll County Arts Council since its very early years. An avid historian and historic preservationist, Dayhoff was a Westminster elected official when the city purchased the Carroll Theatre in 2000 and adaptively renovated the building which reopened on April 6, 2003 as the Carroll Arts Center. He currently serves on the Arts Council board – and continues to actively pursue promoting art and cultural venues in an open, affirming, and inclusive community – and having murals and public art to be installed throughout Westminster.

One of my favorite pictures of Rev. Erin Snell

One of my favorite pictures of Rev. Erin Snell, in action, working to make a difference in our community.

On Wednesday evening, December 21, 2022 Caroline and I attended the annual Blues Christmas and Community Homeless Memorial Service at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Westminster. The service will be the topic of the article I an writing for this weekend in the Carroll County Times. During the service I was reminded of one of my favorite pictures of Rev. Erin Snell.

The other day Erin had reposted a St. Paul's United Church of Christ post with a picture of candles on her page. The caption for the picture explained: “We will have our annual BLUES CHRISTMAS AND COMMUNITY HOMELESS MEMORIAL SERVICE on Wednesday, December 21 (Winter Solstice) at 7:00pm.

“This service is for people struggling with the challenges of the holidays for whatever reason. And, with the help of various community agencies and local law enforcement, we will remember homeless people who have died this past year.

“This service will be live in the Sanctuary and available on Zoom at the usual Sunday worship Zoom link.

“Very special thanks to Henry Reiff who has served as Music Director for this service since we started it together many years ago.” https://www.facebook.com/StPaulsUCCWestminster/posts/pfbid02ZUj2cv3kwgnnz7MKTAZ1TPrfB83dcSvBWJEgbcmmGNgYB7TexYZrVsT8cTpYgz7wl

Ana Vidovic plays Cavatina by Stanley Myers on a Jim Redgate guitar

Toby Keith - Don't Let the Old Man In

Don't Let the Old Man In
Song by Toby Keith

Don't let the old man inI wanna leave this aloneCan't leave it up to himHe's knocking on my door
And I knew all of my lifeThat someday it would endGet up and go outsideDon't let the old man in
Many moons I have livedMy body's weathered and wornAsk yourself how would you beIf you didn't know the day you were born
Try to love on your wifeAnd stay close to your friendsToast each sundown with wineDon't let the old man in
Many moons I have livedMy body's weathered and wornAsk yourself how would you beIf you didn't know the day you were born
When he rides up on his horseAnd you feel that cold bitter windLook out your window and smileDon't let the old man in
Look out your window and smileDon't let the old man in

LYRICS I'm through with standing in line To clubs we'll never get in It's like the bottom of the ninth And I'm never gonna win This life hasn't turned out Quite the way I want it to be (Tell me what you want) I want a brand new house On an episode of Cribs And a bathroom I can play baseball in And a king size tub big enough For ten plus me (So what you need?) I'll need a credit card that's got no limit And a big black jet with a bedroom in it Gonna join the mile high club at thirty-seven thousand feet (Been there, done that) I want a new tour bus full of old guitars My own star on Hollywood Boulevard Somewhere between Cher and James Dean is fine for me (So how you gonna do it?) I'm gonna trade this life for fortune and fame I'd even cut my hair and change my name 'Cause we all just wanna be big rockstars And live in hilltop houses driving fifteen cars The girls come easy and the drugs come cheap We'll all stay skinny 'cause we just won't eat And we'll hang out in the coolest bars In the VIP with the movie stars Every good gold digger's gonna wind up there Every Playboy Bunny with her bleached blond hair, and well Hey hey I wanna be a rockstar Hey hey I wanna be a rockstar I wanna be great like Elvis without the tassels Hire eight body guards that love to beat up assholes Sign a couple autographs so I can eat my meals for free (I'll have the quesadilla, ha, ha) I'm gonna dress my ass with the latest fashion Get a front door key to the Playboy mansion Gonna date a centerfold that loves to blow my money for me (So how you gonna do it?) I'm gonna trade this life for fortune and fame I'd even cut my hair and change my name 'Cause we all just wanna be big rockstars And live in hilltop houses driving fifteen cars The girls come easy and the drugs come cheap We'll all stay skinny 'cause we just won't eat And we'll hang out in the coolest bars In the VIP with the movie stars Every good gold digger's gonna wind up there Every Playboy Bunny with her bleached blond hair And we'll hide out in the private rooms With the latest dictionary and today's who's who They'll get you anything with that evil smile Everybody's got a drug dealer on speed dial, well Hey hey I wanna be a rockstar I'm gonna sing those songs that offend the censors Gonna pop my pills from a pez dispenser I'll get washed-up singers writing all my songs Lip sync 'em every night so I don't get 'em wrong Well, we all just wanna be big rockstars And live in hilltop houses driving fifteen cars The girls come easy and the drugs come cheap We'll all stay skinny 'cause we just won't eat And we'll hang out in the coolest bars In the VIP with the movie stars Every good gold digger's gonna wind up there Every Playboy Bunny with her bleached blond hair And we'll hide out in the private rooms With the latest dictionary and today's who's who They'll get you anything with that evil smile Everybody's got a drug dealer on speed dial, well Hey hey I wanna be a rockstar Hey hey I wanna be a rockstar

Early morning fire claims the life of a shopkeeper. One firefighter hospitalized.

Early morning fire claims the life of a shopkeeper. One firefighter hospitalized.

By Westminster Fire Department PIO and Chaplain Kevin Dayhoff

Westminster Md., Monday, December 12, 2022 - - Over 100 firefighters from throughout Carroll County, in addition to firefighter units from Frederick and Baltimore County and Adams and York County Pa., responded to an early morning fire in the unit block of West Main Street in Westminster.

As a result of the fire, a shopkeeper, Bradley White, 55, the owner of White’s Bicycles was found dead, and one firefighter was taken to Carroll Hospital for treatment. “The severity of those injuries was not known as of Monday afternoon,” according to Westminster Fire Department public information officer Robin Stansbury

According to Westminster Mayor Dr. Mona Becker, “The bicycle shop has been a fixture of Main Street for several decades. The fire is a real tragedy.”

Tony Chiavacci, Westminster Common Councilmember and Public Safety Chair agreed, “The fire – it’s devastating, just heartbreaking, Brad White was a phenomenal guy. Everybody in the community knows him.”

This is the second fire fatality to have occurred in Carroll County in recent weeks. On Sunday afternoon, November 27, 2022, Ronald Joy, 62, a Pleasant Valley man died in a fire in the 2700 block of Littlestown Pike just north of Westminster. https://dayhoffwestminster.blogspot.com/2022/11/fatal-carroll-county-house-fire-nov-28.html

A number of serious fires have occurred in Carroll County this fall that have required the response of a large number of firefighters, first responders and equipment. Approximately 80 firefighters and 25 pieces of firefighting equipment from Carroll, Baltimore, and Frederick county fire departments responded to a building fire at the Westminster Wakefield Valley Park late Thursday morning, November 17, 2022 - https://www.facebook.com/kevindayhoff/posts/pfbid02JJuiAe7qDcHroqcjAdaFtfkMs4tihUk7m2vp9JtAk8FaxG4y9qJ3wNBAPSauv7B2l

Upon arrival, the Westminster Fire Department found fire showing from the roof line of the historic three-story 1767 Durbin House - https://dayhoffwestminster.blogspot.com/2022/12/stubborn-fire-damages-historic.html

The first call for the report of a building fire in the historic downtown Westminster business district, came in to the Emergency Communications Center at 5:18 a.m. Upon arrival units from New Windsor, Reese and Westminster fire departments found fire and heavy smoke evident within the building - coming from White’s bicycle shop, according to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Westminster responded quickly to the scene because the rear of the bicycle shop is adjacent to the Westminster fire station at 28 John Street. Westminster immediately began assisting with evacuating residents from the ten apartments above the business on the 2nd and 3rd floor of the building.

Firefighters from Reese and New Windsor with assistance from Pleasant Valley immediately began an interior fire suppression attack from the front the building – on West Main Street. Additional units responded from Gamber and surrounding fire companies to assist.

“Firefighters continued their search,” according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal, (OSFM) “and subsequently located … White inside. Firefighters pulled him from the building, and EMS began CPR. He was transported to Carroll Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.”

The sprinklers that had been retroactively installed a number of years ago in the historic building that dates back to 1885, were activated by the fire.

According to the OSFM deputy fire marshals, “along with the Westminster Police Department, have been working throughout the morning to determine the cause of the fire. Deputy State Fire Marshals have preliminarily determined the fire originated within the office of the bike shop.

“During their investigation, they discovered evidence White was living inside the business. And while the building was equipped with an automated fire sprinkler system, it was determined the office had no sprinkler coverage.

“Investigators have concluded once the fire spread from the office, the fire was extinguished by fire sprinklers, allowing the 30 tenants above the bicycle shop and the adjoining apartments above Johansson's Dining House to escape safely, and no injuries were reported," said the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office. “The sprinklers saved lives,” according to Westminster Fire Department Chief Jeff Leppert.

“Most of the tenants are displaced and will be assisted by the Red Cross,” said the OSFM. “Carroll County Building and Fire inspectors are assisting OSFM Fire Safety Inspectors in addressing non-related fire and safety code issues in both buildings. A joint investigation between the Office of the State Fire Marshal and the local police agency is a standard operating procedure for a fatal fire.”

The fire was declared under control at 6:34, according to Stansbury. The fire remains under investigation. Most of the tenants that were displaced from their apartments as a result of the fire are being assisted by the Red Cross, according to Stansbury and Valerie D. Hawkins, Carroll County Emergency Management Manager.

“The Westminster Fire Department would like to thank Chick-fil-A and BJ's Wholesale Club  for donating food following the fire this morning. Their generosity was greatly appreciated by all,” according to Bridget Weishaar, the Westminster Fire Department Recruitment & Retention Coordinator.

The Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office, Westminster Firefighter and PIO Robin Stansbury, the Westminster Police Department, Mike Robinson, the Carroll County Director of Fire and EMS, Valerie D. Hawkins, Carroll County Emergency Management Manager, and Tony Chiavacci, Westminster Common Councilmember and Public Safety Chair, assisted in putting this report together.
