The Buddy Deane Show, a teen dance show which originated on
Channel 13 – WJZ TV, in Baltimore, began its first show on the air on Sept. 9,
1957. It remained on the air until Jan. 4, 1964.
I had always understood that it went off the air because WJZ
refused to integrate the show and have black and white folks dance together.
Apparently in recent years the reasons why the show was cancelled are subject
to disagreement and discussion.
Oral tradition has it that Buddy Deane once held a dance in
Westminster on a farm. I wonder where?
Westminster Skateboard Park: I drove by the Westminster Skateboard Park and was happy to see so many families there enjoying a lazy Westminster summer day in the park with their kids. Sat., August 22, 2020.
"Cranberry Station - Railroad to the moon" Tuesday, August 4, 2020 10:12 p.m. in Cranberry Station, Westminster, Carroll County Maryland. The full moon created a stunning backdrop as just to the left of the picture the Westminster public works utility maintenance crew was working together as if they were performing in a carefully choreographed ballet and they worked to remove and replace a section of a broken water main pipe. The hum of the diesel engines added to the musical backdrop and they sang instructions to each other. It was actually quite a performance.

Happy Bastille Day! July is a month in which Americans celebrate a spirit of independence and rebellion against tyranny. So, too, do the French. In 1789, Parisians dismantled the ancient fortress of the Bastille stone by stone, thus ridding themselves of a symbol of fear and oppression. The world would never be the same. I had the good fortune to write about the women of the French Revolution both in my new novel, The Women of Chateau Lafayette and in Ribbons of Scarlet, which brings me to...

BOOK OF THE MONTH
My take: Grab some popcorn and slide into your fuzzy slippers for an indulgent and voyeuristic read that exposes the glamour and dysfunction of high society during the interwar years. Thelma's romance with the future King of England is one of heartbreak and betrayal, but her salvation is sisterly love. All in all, a delightful debut written with Turnbull's deft touch!
