Robert Mapplethorpe’s Photography at the Guggenheim…

JANUARY 23, 2019: See and Be Seen: Robert Mapplethorpe’s Photography at the Guggenheim…

Who is up for a road trip: JANUARY 23, 2019: See and Be Seen: Robert Mapplethorpe’s Photography at the Guggenheim…

According to an article By Caitlin Dover on the Guggenheim’s website here: https://www.guggenheim.org/blogs/checklist/see-and-be-seen-robert-mapplethorpes-photography-at-the-guggenheim

[…]

Implicit Tensions: Mapplethorpe Now, which opens this Friday, January 25 at the Guggenheim, presents selections of the artist’s work thirty years after his death. Drawn from extensive holdings gifted to the museum by the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation in 1993, the show includes iconic images of nudes and flowers, explicit depictions of the S&M underground, portraits of the likes of Philip Glass and Andy Warhol, and Mapplethorpe’s intriguing and moving self-portraits.

The exhibition will have two phases; the second phase, which opens in July, will delve into Mapplethorpe’s impact on portraiture and self-representation, showing works by contemporary artists Rotimi Fani-Kayode, Lyle Ashton Harris, Glenn Ligon, Zanele Muholi, Catherine Opie, and Paul Mpagi Sepuya.

Reviewing the art submitted for the magazine Creative Expressions – at Carroll Lutheran Village

Reviewing the art submitted for the magazine Creative Expressions – at Carroll Lutheran Village

A little while ago, just before the holidays I was mailed my copy of the magazine ‘Creative Expressions’ from Carroll Lutheran Village. I set my copy on the corner of my desk to look at later… Well, I finally got a chance to uncover it. It is wonderful to leaf through the magazine with art from the residents at Carroll Lutheran Village. It just seems like yesterday that we did the judging – but it was a number of months ago, that I was among the three local artists that met on Aug. 2, 2018 to select the artwork at Carroll Lutheran Village

On Sunday, September 2, 2018, [Update: 30Dec2018,] the Carroll County Times ran a copy of the picture we took that day in the section called, “Prime,” news for the 55-forward community. Page C3 Sunday, September 2, 2018. [Update: 30Dec2018] Creative Expressions - Three local artists met on Aug. 2 to select the artwork to appear on the covers of Creative Expressions, the annual Carroll Lutheran Village creative magazine produced by residents [that was just recently released.] The artwork was created by Village residents and staff for the 2018 issue of Creative Expressions.

Yesterday, 17feb2019, we attended the 7:45 a.m. service at Grace Lutheran Church so that we could also go to the breakfast at the Reese fire hall. We really enjoyed the breakfast and saw lots of neat people, including Commissioner Dick Weaver and his wife, Lila.

July 7, 1929 “Pleasure Crazed” movie set

July 7, 1929 “Pleasure Crazed” movie set.

Kevin Dayhoff February 5, 2019

This is a picture featuring an elegant art nouveau – art deco
entranceway from the set from an obscure black and white American movie, “Pleasure
Crazed,” which was released by Fox Film Corporation on July 7, 1929.

The movie was based upon “The Scent of Sweet Almonds” by
Monckton Hoffe and features themes involving a poor writer, con-artists, intrigue,
deception, infidelity, and suicide.

The 60-minute film was directed by Donald Gallaher and
Charles Klein and written by Douglas Z. Doty and Clare Kummer. The
cinematographers were Glen MacWilliams and Ernest Palmer. It was edited by J.
Edwin Robbins.

The melodramatic movie featured the work of Marguerite
Churchill, Kenneth MacKenna, Dorothy Burgess, Campbell Gullan, Douglas Gilmore,
and Henry Kolker.

The movie was made when the Great Depression was just beginning
and film design and technology were in its infancy. It was a time when art deco
was transitioning into ‘modernism,’ and many highly stylized movies and
literary works featured the excesses of the life of the rich and famous. In
retrospect, many historians view the era as an attempt to distract much of the
population from the rigors and depravations of the Great Depression.

It is hard to find information about the movie. According to
the American Film Institute, an April 21, 1920 New York Times news item, “Fox
bought the rights to Monckton Hoffe's story, which was written as a play but
never produced. The same article included Earle Foxe in the cast, but his
appearance in the released film has not been confirmed…

“Alma Dean and her husband, Anthony, rent a house from a
trio of crooks who have the intention of stealing the wife's jewels. The female
member of the group remains in the guise of a housekeeper, and gradually she
and Anthony become very fond of each other.

“In the meantime, Alma is playing around with a poor writer,
and Anthony, miserable, leaves her, accidentally carrying away a flask
containing poison.

“Previously, the writer dared Alma to commit suicide, but
when she sees her husband take this very flask, she says nothing. The
"housekeeper," learning of the state of affairs, chases after Anthony
and wrecks her car at the garage where he is buying gasoline. The situation is
satisfactorily resolved…”

Sharon Van Etten - "Taking Chances" (Official Video)

Sharon Van Etten - "Taking Chances" (Official Video)

Sharon Van Etten, 'Are We There' out May 27th (May 26th in the UK) on Jagjaguwar.

http://smarturl.it/sharonvanetten4 Director, Editor & DP: Michael Palmieri http://michaelpalmieri.com

SVE contacted me a few months back to see if I'd like to come up with some ideas for "Taking Chances", her first single off the new record. When I first heard the song the lyrics immediately made me think about the opening sequence to the great Agnes Varda film "Cleo from 5 to 7", one of my favorites. I usually mull over ideas for days or weeks before coming up with anything decent to share with an artist, but this one just came out immediately. I sent a sketch of the idea onto Sharon and Zeke Hutchins, her manager, then I didn't hear back from them for over a week, at which point I thought, well, damn, they must hate the idea, I blew it! But soon Zeke contacted me and asked if Sharon had sent me the album artwork. I said, no, I haven't even heard anything else off the album yet, let alone seen anything from it. Sharon then texted me pretty much the same question, "Did Zeke send you the album before you wrote this?" Nope. I didn't understand what the big deal was. Finally they sent me a photograph that's a big component of the album artwork, it's this beautiful aged picture of Agnes Varda standing in front of a bazillion reels of 16mm film. This image of one of my filmmaking heroes has been hanging on Sharon's wall wherever she's lived for years and years to the point where it's all tattered and weather-worn. I like to think that Ms. Varda is standing in front of a bunch of reels from Cleo from 5 to 7, but who knows. It's just one of the strangest coincidences, and it made us all feel like the video had to be made. So now I can safely say the video is inspired by two incredible women: Sharon, for her musical inspiration, and Agnes Varda, whose inspiration on the both of us is quite apparent.

Sharon Van Etten - Seventeen

“Seventeen” by Sharon Van Etten

Feb. 5, 2019

Hat Tip: Leslie Eckard

Sharon Van Etten is epic. I follow her here: https://www.facebook.com/SharonVanEttenMusic/ She reminds me somewhat of a combination of Leonard Cohen, and Marianne Faithfull…

She is in DC this coming Wednesday, February 6, 2019 at the 9:30 Club. Speaking of the theme of this video – when was the last time you did the club scene in DC?

This songs reminds me of my downtown New York City Greenwich Village, Sherman Square - Needle Park, Verdi Square, Washington Square years, going from gallery to gallery and agent to agent with my art slides.

There is a good interview with her in the Jan. 3, 2019 New York Times by Joe Coscarelli, “The Many Lives of Sharon Van Etten - After her first child and a turn toward television, the singer-songwriter returns with a fresh outlook and a new sound on “Remind Me Tomorrow,” her fifth album.” Find the article here: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/03/arts/music/sharon-van-etten-remind-me-tomorrow-interview.html?action=click&module=RelatedLinks&pgtype=Article

Lunch About Nothing

Lunch About Nothing with approximately 35 of my best friends. Rafael's 32 West Main St. 28Jan2019

Welcome to Lunch About Nothing, September 24, 2018. Held the fourth Monday of the month at Rafael's in Westminster (not necessarily the last Monday) 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm. Next lunch February 25. Just buy your lunch from a great menu of salads and fresh sandwiches.

Make new contacts and see friends. Business is everywhere if you look. Bring some friends. Bring plenty of business cards and fliers. Be prepared to introduce yourself with a 30 second elevator speech. You can even bring a few things to sell if you are a crafter or artist.

It is important to keep your name out there. You never know where the business is and name recognition is important when someone needs your service or product.

It is a good place to look for a new employee or to get your name out there for a job. Long term relationships will bring you business. No need to RSVP. You do not need to join. The group is open. Invite your friends and new people you meet.

The story of the lonely vacuum cleaner

16Jan2019 by Tommy Toaster
This is the story of the lonely vacuum cleaner.
About how an old and aging vacuum cleaner was left in the “Buzzard’s Crust Big Shed Studio” all alone on Christmas Day.
What could possibly be meaner?
It missed its friends the electric water heater and the dehumidifier.
What more can I say.
It had no idea why it was left all alone on Christmas Day – in the dark, and the cold, without its friends.
It missed being in a warm house – with the sounds of children.
Not a creature was stirring – not even a mouse.
