Taping Mike Eaton memories on Friday at Cockey's

As much pre-taping of Mike Eaton memories as we can get done with Jim Mayola of the Community Media Center, the further ahead we are!

If we could do this between 9 and Noon, it would be great … on-site at Cockey’s. So, who can I book. Call me Tuesday or email me. Many thanks.
Evelyn Babylon is the only one Jim Mayola has in the can, so to speak.

Sherri Hosfeld Joseph sat with a sigh and a big smile.

“Hi. How are ya? How’s the coffee?”

To the delight of many a Westminster caffeine addict, Hosfeld recently opened a coffee shop — Birdie’s CafĂ© — in an historic brick building at 233 E. Main St.

After a run of about seven years, the former coffee shop there, The Pour House, abruptly ceased operations in November 2008.

Its absence was the source of caffeine-deprived headaches and a blow to Westminster’s downtown district, which includes the newly renovated Cockey’s addition to the Historical Society of Carroll County and the Carroll Arts Center on the western end of town...

DAYHOFF: Clock docs make house call to fix historic Westminster clock tower on Main Street Eagle Archives Posted 8/08/10 by Carroll Eagle, Westminster Eagle

(Enlarge) Wayne Reifsnider, assistant superintendent for the City of Westminster Street Department, works to replace the hands of the 1896 Westminster town clock in the early morning hours of Aug. 3. Reifsnider was assisting a crew from Precision Repair, a timepiece restoration company, which performed a bit of delicate surgery four stories above Westminster's Main Street as part of an overall restoration project for the historic clock. (Photo by Kevin E. Dayhoff)

In the early morning hours of Aug. 3, the old clock atop the old Westminster fire hall -- which served Westminster from 1896 to 1998 at 66 E. Main St. -- got a brand new shiny pair of hands. The venerable timepiece has been a fixture in town since it was dedicated at 3:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26, 1896.

City of Westminster workers used a crane from Thomas Bennett and Hunter, a local road-building firm; and Dave Booth of Precision Repair, a timepiece restoration firm, to accomplish the delicate surgery performed four stories in the air.

Clock doctor Booth was assisted by Wayne Reifsnider, assistant city Street Department superintendent. Meanwhile, Superintendent Larry Bloom, along with Jeff Glass, the city public works director; and city workers Shawn Lockard and Alan Miller, served as ground support.

Keeping the old timepiece working has been challenging for the city workers in the last number of years.

Miller said it was good to get it worked on, as he looked briefly up at the old clock. Lockard added, “I’m glad that we’re finally getting it fixed.”

A Legacy of Learning Lives On

The Babylon Family of Westminster

and the Historical Society of Carroll County

Announces the Creation of a Lasting Memorial to

William Granville (“Mike”) Eaton

William Granville “Mike” Eaton (1908) was a renaissance man until he died in 1995,

For 41 years, Mike Eaton taught English and drama in Carroll County schools, 38 of those years at Westminster High School. Always he demanded excellence.

He gave to his community through the Westminster Kiwanis Club. He gave to the community through his affiliation with Grace Lutheran Church. He produced memorable theatrical offerings as coach of the Westminster High School Drama Club.

Eaton nurtured future leaders through the Kiwanis Key Club and inspired many students, friends and colleagues to higher glory. Among his students was writer (On Golden Pond), director and actor Ernest Thompson whose work has won him an Oscar, a Golden Globe and Writer’s Guild of America awards. Although best known perhaps, Thompson is not the only student Eaton inspired to excel in the creative arts.

For over three decades, Mike Eaton was Thelma Hoffman’s star boarder at Hoffman’s Inn, now owned by the Historical Society of Carroll County and known as Cockey’s as it was known when built in 1820.

In life Mike Eaton was roasted and toasted. In death he is being memorialized in the room that was his very own at Cockey’s.

Under the partnership of the David Babylon family of Westminster and the Historical Society of Carroll County, former students, friends and colleagues are building a lasting memorial with a lofty but achievable goal.

The first $10,000 has been raised to open the Mike Eaton Room on the third floor of Cockey’s, complete with much of his memorabilia catalogued and displayed. The second goal is the raising of $25,000 to name a second floor conference room. When that goal is accomplished, the Mike Eaton Committee and the Historical Society will raise a $250,000 endowment that will carry the Eaton name forth in perpetuity for years to come.

Eighty percent of the earnings generated by the scholarship endowment will go directly to qualifying, graduating students who will also be asked to name their most inspirational teacher for a recognition gift. Twenty percent of the scholarship fund will go to support the educational mission of the Historical Society.

Committee Chairperson Evelyn Babylon notes that it will take much dedication and time to develop a scholarship endowment of this magnitude. Criteria for scholarship applications will be completed at a later date and amounts will be determined by the returns on the endowment investments.
