The presidential politics of this election year is a fitting context for a recent book talk at McDaniel College on the arcane, distinctive and uniquely byzantine political history of Maryland
"Maryland Politics and Government: Democratic Dominance," written by John Willis and Herbert Smith is a 432-page look at Maryland's political identity. The book was released this past January, part of the Politics and Governments of the American States series by the University of Nebraska Press.
"It's truly a labor of love," said Smith, who has been a professor of political science and international studies at McDaniel College since 1973.
Willis is the director of the government and public policy program at the University of Baltimore. He served as Maryland's secretary of state from 1995 to 2003 and is also the author of another book, "Presidential Elections in Maryland." … http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/community/ph-ce-eagle-archive-0930-20120926,0,2507354.story

Democratic Party, established in the post–Civil War era, that persists to this

One of my all-time favorite movies... I ran across this review, by happenstance. I have not seen the movies in ages; however as a result of reading the review, I will look forward to watching it again soon...
MY DINNER WITH ANDRE (PG)
My Dinner With Andre BY ROGER EBERT / January 1, 1981
The idea is astonishing in its audacity: a film of two
friends talking, just simply talking—but with passion, wit, scandal, whimsy,
vision, hope, and despair—for 110 minutes. It sounds at first like one of those
underground films of the 1960s, in which great length and minimal content
somehow interacted in the dope-addled brains of the audience to provide the
impression of deep if somehow elusive profundity. "My
Dinner with Andre" is not like that. It doesn't use all of those words
as a stunt.
[...]
The two people are André Gregory and Wallace
Shawn. Those are their real names, and also their names in the movie. I
suppose they are playing themselves. As the film opens, Shawn travels across
New York City to meet Gregory for dinner, and his thoughts provide us with
background: His friend Gregory is a New York theater director, well-known into
the 1970s, who dropped out for five years and traveled around the world. Now
Gregory has returned, with wondrous tales of strange experiences. Shawn has
spent the same years in New York, finding uncertain success as an author and
playwright. They sit down for dinner in an elegant restaurant. We do not see
the other customers. The bartender is a wraith in the background, the waiter is
the sort of presence they were waiting for in "Waiting for Godot."
The friends order dinner, and then, as it is served and they eat and drink,
they talk.

Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church is celebrating its 145th anniversary this weekend. The historic church, at 21 Carroll St., Westminster, was chartered Sept. 20-23, 1867, according to various accounts — including a history of Grace Lutheran published in 1967.
The history traces Lutheranism in Maryland back to the years 1747 and 1748, "when a small number of Lutherans and German Reformers met and held union services at member's homes. ... History relates nothing further of Lutheranism in Westminster (since those late 1740s references) until Nov. 14, 1842, when Rev. Philip Willard, Pastor of Manchester … organized a Lutheran congregation (in Westminster)."
At that time, church services were held in the West End School House. Then, "On May 9th, 1863, a call was extended to Rev. H.C. Holloway, then a student at the Gettysburg Theological Seminary. His salary was $500.00."
"On July 16th, a white canvas-covered spring wagon left Gettysburg" to bring Holloway to Westminster, according to current Grace Lutheran Pastor Kevin Clementson, who serves the church with his wife and partner, Pastor Martha Clementson… http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/ph-ce-eagle-archive-0923-20120918,0,6828283.story
In 1905, the steeple at Grace Church was lowered after being struck by lightning. (The second time lightning struck the steeple was when I joined the church Oct. 25, 1998.)
Grace Lutheran will celebrate its 145th anniversary at all four worship services this weekend. And from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, the church will have an open house and conduct tours of the historic church.
"In this day and age when so many congregations are struggling for survival, our congregation truly is blessed with many faithful members of all ages," said Pastor Martha Clementson, who urged guests to "please come and be part of the celebration."
The public is welcome to attend. Bring a friend. For more information, go to http://www.gracelc.org
