The first day of Baltimore Orioles’ spring training began Sunday when the pitchers and catchers reported for the annual ritual in Sarasota, Florida.

It’s a sure sign that – thankfully – spring weather is about to make its debut in Maryland.

Baseball has always been a favorite topic for many local history writers. And why not? Writing about baseball is fun. It has everything to warm the keyboard including summertime, arcane statistics, intrigue, colorful events, talent, family, and friends.

Articles about sports are fun to read and sports writers are some of my favorite writers… http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=4934

Sad Times for Eastman Kodak, TheTentacle.com: February 15, 2012, by Kevin E. Dayhoff

There have been many tragedies of economic malaise in the last five years. Kodak’s recent filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy seems especially sad; and it is only fitting that we pause for a moment to pay our respects.

According to an article in The Wall Street Journal by Mike Spector, Dana Mattioli and Peg Brickley on January 20, “Kodak's board, meeting by telephone, voted to seek bankruptcy protection at 4:48 p.m. Wednesday after a 75-minute discussion of the company’s position, a person familiar with the matter said. The company filed the documents shortly after midnight.”

Then, as if the laws of nature endeavored to pour salt in the wound – and our collective memories – the venerable 132-year old icon of American hard work and innovation announced it was going to stop making cameras… http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=4921

#McDaniel New Gill Stadium will take its place in college's #Sports #History http://tinyurl.com/7wkok9s #Westminster

Eagle Archive McDaniel's new Gill Stadium will take its place in college's athletic history  By Kevin Dayhoff, February 9, 2012 http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/community/ph-ce-eagle-archive-0212-20120208,0,3363909.story

On Feb. 3, McDaniel College held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Kenneth R. Gill Stadium.

In an article by The Eagle's Steve Jones, at ExploreCarroll.com, he noted that at the ceremonies, "shovels dug into a pile of dirt at McDaniel College" to kick off the project.

Actually, that wasn't just any ol' "pile of dirt," but rather soil from a storied history — for both the college and Westminster.

The new $8 million, 1,434-seat Gill Stadium, which will replace the existing 900-seat Bair Stadium, will provide spectators a great view of the running track and athletic field.

That track has been known since June 10, 1922, as Hoffa Field.

Of course, growing up in Westminster in the 1950s, it was really known as "the football field on the Geiman farm." In the years before 1922, when the college was outside of Westminster city limits, the Geiman farm, and the then-Duvall Farm, were located between the campus and what we now know as Baugher's Restaurant.

The first mention of the Geiman farm in the definitive history of the college, "Fearless and Bold," written by Dr. James E. Lightner, is in 1888…http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/community/ph-ce-eagle-archive-0212-20120208,0,3363909.story

High school sports have always played an important role in Carroll County. Although one may have a lively discussion as to which sport is the favorite in the county, there can no doubt that basketball — and wrestling — provide a great respite from Carroll County's cold miserable winter weather.

American Sentinel, January 29, 1898: The Hotel Question in Silver Run

Silver Run Items—The hotel question is again being discussed among the people of our village. There was a new applicant around for signers, but we cannot say at present whether he will succeed in procuring them or not.

There have been no hotels in this place since last May, and since that time every thing has moved along quietly and all appear to be as happy and hearty as they were before the hotels were closed. But it seems that some of those that do feel happy and hearty since the hotels are closed are still not contented.

It is rumored that some of them that fought hard to have the hotels closed last spring are now giving their consent to have them opened again. This may be a false report, which we hope it is, and if it is not, hereafter we cannot judge our good people by their appearance at first sight.

last year it was the Comcast digital cable box hardware upgrade - from hell. It took an enormous amount of time, several false starts and lots of time on the phone with "customer service." Now comes the software upgrade...

Baltimore football championship seasons have always started in Westminster … so should we be worried?

Baltimore football championship seasons have always started in Westminster ... so should we be worried?

Many Carroll County residents are getting a case of nostalgic Super Bowl fever as they look forward to Sunday's AFC championship contest between the Baltimore Ravens and the New England Patriots.

For more than 120 years — since football debuted at then-Western Maryland College on Oct. 31, 1891 — football has been a part of the history of Carroll County.

Not to be overlooked is the fact that since July 1949, Baltimore football teams have held summer practice in Westminster. Names like Raymond Berry, Jim Parker, Art Donovan, Gino Marchetti, Lenny Moore, Eugene (Big Daddy) Lipscomb, Alan Ameche, and Wilbur (Weeb) Ewbank, just to mention a few, have become an important part of our Carroll County cultural history.

And yes, there is also that quarterback that was cut by the Pittsburg Steelers in 1956.

What was his name? Oh yeah, right. Johnny Unitas.

Unbelievable. According to an old history of the Baltimore Colts in my files, "Unitas was cut by… http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/community/ph-ce-eagle-archive-0122-20120119,0,3298374.story
