March is Women's History Month

Beginning back in 1911, Woman's History Month has been celebrated each March by acknowledging the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society.  In celebration of this event, The Shop at Cockey's is featuring the book, Courageous Women of Maryland by Katherine Kenny and Eleanor Randrup.  Both women are also co-authors of Juanita Jackson Mitchell: Freedom Fighter. They both live in Baltimore, Maryland.

Learn about eighteen of Maryland's most influential and courageous women, past and present.  Ideal for the classroom, this educational book offers brief biographies and commentary on poet Lucille Clinton; politicians Helen Delich Bentley, Barbara Mikulski, and Verda Welcome; photojournalist Sadie Kneller Miller; fashion designer Claire McCardell; and art collectors the Cone sisters.  The book takes a look at each women's achievements and the courageous choices they made to realize success.

How America Discovered the
 Easter Bunny

The Easter Bunny is a rabbit or hare who carries a basket of colored eggs which he hides the night before Easter so children can huntfor them in the morning.  This furry bunny has become a holiday icon and is loved by children of all ages.   Bunnies with pastel colored baskets and candy line the shelves of stores each spring.  But how did we adopt the idea of an egg-laying bunny?

The very first mention of an Easter Bunny dates back to a book written in 1682 by Georg Franck von Frankenau.  The rabbit and the egg were also the symbols of fertility for ancient pagans and a popular motif in medieval churches.

But America didn't adopt the idea of an Easter Bunny until the 18th century when the Pennsylvania Dutch immigrants brought to this country, the story of the  "Osterhase," which is an Easter Hare.  Children would make baskets out of their Easter hats and bonnets and leave them for the Osterhase to fill.  The Osterhase would come
the night before Easter and leave beautiful decorated eggs in the children's hats and bonnets.

Today, the Easter Bunny is still hard at work trying to deliver baskets to children all over the world.  And because of our German ancestors, we are able to carry on this tradition in the USA.  Remember to thank your German ancestors this holiday while enjoying decorated eggs, marshmallow chicks, Easter baskets, and most importantly, the chocolate Easter Bunny.

How much sleep have I lost worrying about daylight saving time? Eagle Archive by Kevin Dayhoff

How much sleep have I lost worrying about daylight saving time?

Eagle Archive

By Kevin E. Dayhoff November 10, 2012

A full week later, I'm still savoring the extra hour of sleep I got last Sunday morning at 2 a.m. when daylight saving time officially ended for 2012.

Of course, I lost that hour in the days since, lying awake thinking about the history of daylight savings time. The March 7, 1947, edition of a local Westminster paper carried an article which gives us some insight into almost a century of controversy over daylight saving time.

Ben Franklin is credited with advocating the value of "daylight saving," in 1784, in a satirical, anonymous letter to the editor of the Journal of Paris. In it, he proposed, among many humorous remedies to the overuse of candles, a tax on shutters, to be enforced by stepped-up police vigilance and the rationing of candles.

It was not until the Standard Time Act was enacted March 19, 1918, that daylight saving time was established in the United States. It was so controversial that it was promptly repealed in 1919.

According to the U.S. Naval Observatory, it was re-established nationally early in World War II, and was continuously observed from February 1942 to September 1945. After the war, its use was determined locally among states, counties and communities…

Eagle Archive: Good riddance to short, dark, gray, cold and dreary month of February http://tinyurl.com/ackwtma

T.S. Eliot wrote in the poem, "The Waste Land," published in November of 1922, that "April is the cruelest month."

I could not disagree more.

The month of February is a horrible joke foisted upon us. This, in spite of the fact that Feb. 24, St. Matthias Day, is, by tradition, understood to be the luckiest day of the year.

According to research by the Historical Society of Carroll County, "The Jan. 27, 1922, issue of the Union Bridge Pilot newspaper mentioned St. Matthias Day, saying: 'Another bit of old weather lore comes February 24, St. Matthias day. According to the old saying: 'If he finds ice, he'll break it. If he finds none, he'll make it.'" …

Saint Matthias is a pretty mysterious character in the Bible. He is only mentioned twice — in Acts 1:21-22 and Acts 1: 26. In those passages, it is noted that following the Ascension of Christ, 120 disciples were assembled by Peter to choose a replacement for Judas. Two were nominated for consideration, Joseph Barsabbas, also known as Justus, and Matthias.

The choice between the two was determined by the luck of the draw. Acts 1: 26 says, "And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias."

His name is never mentioned again in the New Testament, even though he was named the twelfth disciple.

Anyway, when it comes to weather in the month of February, we are not as lucky as Matthias… http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/community/ph-ce-eagle-archive-0303-20130305,0,4412485.story

Artist Biography

After working in the corporate world for many years Donna took an early retirement.  In January 2007, she took her first art class at Carroll Community College.  She continued with private watercolor classes with Felisa Flecker, workshops and classes with Tara Grim, Carolyn Seabolt, Sarah Abel DeLuca, and Skip Lawrence.  Presently Donna enjoys abstract painting, using acrylics, collage and mixed media with Ed Ramsburg, who continually encourages her to grow as an artist.

She has exhibited at Carroll County Community College – The Great Hall, Carroll Life Gallery, Circuit Court Building, Carroll County Arts Council, Frederick Arts Council (FAC), Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center (DVAEC), The Artists Gallery, FMH Crestwood Gallery, and Frederick County Art Association.  Within this past year, two of the art pieces have been shown at the Annapolis Statehouse Building.  Presently, original pieces and giclees are in private collections and consigned in a local shop.

When Donna was in the second grade art class, she remembered feeling the excitement when painting her first abstract.  Now she is focusing on acrylic, collage and mixed media abstracts - the larger the canvas, the better.  She enjoys expressing creativity through painting and going to new levels using the imagination with whatever materials are available.  The whole process from beginning to end is exhilarating! I love sharing my world of color with others.
