“Full Figure” on view at Carroll Arts Center

The Tevis Gallery at the Carroll Arts Center will feature an exhibit entitled “Full Figure” from October 6-November 16

Figures. We all have them.  They come in different sizes and shapes, ages, colors and attitudes but they are all full of life, breath, flesh and bones.  “Full Figure” honors the human form in all its presence: moving, resting, thinking, working, posing. From the ancients until now, artists have been fascinated with creating likenesses of humans. Athletic poses, historic figures, balletic form, stylish and otherwise created in realism, abstract, painted, sculpted and mixed media will offer the viewer a glimpse of “us” and the glory of our “full figures.”

One of the highlights will be a portrait of Anna Ella Carroll, after whose family, Carroll Country was named. This painting reveals a tour, not only through Civil War history, but a history of the artistic development of the human form as well.  The exhibit will include paintings, drawings as well as sculpture.

Artists include: Nancy Abeles, Bethesda, MD, Walter Bartman, Jefferson, MD; Laura Era, Cambridge, MD; Peter Eide, New Windsor, MD; Sara Knox, Hagerstown, MD, Elaine Lozier, Bethesda, MD; Devin Mack, Towson, MD, Deborah Nell, East Berlin, PA, Cathy Z. Sawdey, Ellicott City, MD; and Nick Wenderoth, Westminster, MD.

A meet the artists’ reception will be held on Thursday October 16 from 5:30-7:30 pm.

Susan Williamson, Visual Arts Coordinator, will present a free gallery talk on this exhibit on Thursday October 20 at noon and 7 pm.

Friday, October 14 from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm for $35
Overview of Whole Person Drumming: Introducing the Drum
For beginning and continuing students. Some of us do not know anything about the drum or how to enter into rhythms. Others need to let go of concepts so that we can pay attention to how we feel, breathe, and sense ourselves in rhythm. Zorina can help all drummers feel comfortable with rhythm. Drums are available or bring your own. If you have never drummed, please arrive at 6:00. Location: Room for Friends.

Saturday, October 15 from 10:30 am to 1:00 pm for $55
Reconnecting with Rhythm
For beginning and continuing students. Each of us develops a “rhythmic hard drive” which is listening and learning how to combine rhythmic patterns in our own timing. By relaxing as we play, we can rely on the group to heighten our sense of rhythm. Instead of thinking, playing with the groove gives us an opportunity to be carried by the music. Location: Room for Friends

Saturday, October 15 from 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm for $55
Getting Up to Speed with Your Drum
Welcome to your continuing drum education! The prerequisites for this class are previous drumming experience, knowledge of technique, and a desire for a new challenge. Bring your own drum. This class will focus on technique exercises for clearer, faster playing, complex rhythmic patterns, body rhythms and rhythmic meditations, and deconstructing the 12/8 clave. Location: Room for Friends. If you are unsure about whether this class is appropriate for you, please ask Zorina at zorinalight@me.com

Take both “Overview of Whole Person Drumming” AND “Reconnecting with Rhythm” and pay only $95!

A Taste of TaKeTiNa: Rhythm for Evolution, drum circle and workshop
We’ll have a community drum circle from 7:00 to 8:00 and then a TaKeTiNa Rhythm Movement workshop from 8:15 to 9:45. The TaKeTiNa Rhythm Process is an informal and enjoyable way to learn the basics of finding rhythm in the body. TaKeTiNa is a group process that allows anyone to access his or her innate rhythmic knowledge. Instead of being taught random rhythm patterns, participants are guided into the experience of rhythm archetypes—the underlying structure of all forms of music conveyed in a natural, organic manner. Come prepared to move and wear supportive shoes. Location: Cedarhurst Unitarian Universalists, 2912 Club House Rd., Finksburg, MD
