Explore Carroll: DAYHOFF: Diffendal's life of service deserved a 'lot' of attention

In the past several years, a number of readers have asked about the names of the various parking lots in Westminster -- and where they come from.

In particular, several folks have asked about Thomas S. Diffendal, for whom the East Main Street parking lot in Westminster is named.

Some of the queries came after I referred to it in an April 8, 2009, column about the Palace Livery stable fire of April 6, 1906.

That fire occurred right next to where the fire station was located at that time, and destroyed the home and livery stable owned by Harry Harbaugh. At that time, the offices of the City of Westminster were also in the fire station.

The Harbaugh Livery Stable stood next to the stable and home owned by Westminster Mayor O.D. Gilbert.

Today, the parking lot is literally located within the old walls of the Gilbert garage, between the Westminster Library and the old Westminster Volunteer Fire Station... http://www.explorecarroll.com/opinion/5369/diffendals-life-service-deserved-lot-attention/

The Higher Learning Program Summer Themes | Local And Global Travel | News And Events Overview

Higher Learning's experiential education program is holistic in design. The program's active, hands-on approach moves youth of color beyond the familiar both locally and globally in order to nurture a desire for life long learning.

In addition to sharpening academic skills beyond the standard school curriculum, Higher Learning's programming integrates important 21st century skills like team work, creativity, ingenuity, and global awareness (along with reading, writing and speaking) in the context of real life situations. These experiences equip students with knowledge that will serve them well in both the classroom and the real world.

Youth who complete the Higher Learning Program will develop:

A habit of thinking, inquiring, and challenging default assumptions

A respect for and better understanding of their responsibility to themselves, family, and community

An understanding of the relationship between personal experiences and collective social issues

A better understanding of their relationship to and interconnectedness with the United States and the world

Confidence, motivation, and a sense of empowerment; they will take steps to ensure positive, productive, and civic minded life choices, including those related to health and wellness, financial security and independence, community building, and self-presentation

Literacy, communication, foreign language, team building, and thinking and reasoning skills

Creativity, motivation, and greater success in school

Improved occupational and educational choices and opportunities

Target Population

Higher Learning currently serves youth of color ages 11-17 in the Maryland area, particularly those in Carroll County where the program is located. Our Baltimore program will launch Fall 2010.

The first section is a list of the top runners by class.  The second section is the list of the runners by place and time.  The preregistered list of participating schools is on the last page…

++++++

There were approximately 600 runners in the second heat, the fun run, which was untimed.  218 runners participated in the competitive run.

+++++++
Despite the chilly spring temperature and the gray overcast skies, hundreds of runners and an equal number of fans lined the sidewalks of downtown Westminster for the 30th running of the Main Street Mile Wednesday evening.

The annual Westminster tradition announces the final arrival of spring as if the runners, fans, and family supporters run to downtown Westminster to spread the word that warmer temperatures and spring flowers are soon to follow.

The race has grown in size in the past decades and now attracts runners and families from all over the mid-Atlantic region.  The annual rite of spring is a huge community effort featuring the teamwork of the downtown merchants, Westminster Road Runners Club, Westminster Volunteer Fire Department, Police Department and Fire Police and scores of volunteers.

[…]

As is tradition, the race is run in two parts.  218 runners ran in the competitive run which took-off first at 7 p.m. sharp, which was announced this year by the booming bell of the Westminster Clock Tower which offered a perfect back-drop to the carefully choreographed chaos of the finish line frenzy near the railroad tracks.  And this year, for effect, a train came through town just after the race to add ambiance to the community event.

[…]

600 runners raced in the second portion of the race event, the Connor Smith Memorial Fun Run which features children under the age of ten-years old.

[…]

The fastest known Maryland State Trooper in this year’s race was Laura Beck, of Westminster with a time of six minutes and thirty-nine seconds, followed by Major Scott Yinger of Westminster with a time of seven minutes and two seconds – not bad for the former Westminster barrack commander and state police veteran who is just months away from retirement.

“Oh, don’t put me in the paper,” said Yinger after the race, as his wife, Charlene – who ran the race with a time of seven-minutes and thirty-nine seconds – stood by the older trooper to make sure he was okay.

Two of the oldest runners in this year’s festivities were Tami Graf, who crossed the finish line at eight-minutes and thirty-nine seconds at 74-years young.  She was followed by Yvonne Aasen, who was believed to be one of the oldest in the race at age 79 and finished with a time of nine-minutes and forty-nine seconds.

Explore Carroll: DAYHOFF: More Medal of Honor recipients have Carroll County connections

Explore Carroll: DAYHOFF: More Medal of Honor recipients have Carroll County connections

by Kevin Dayhoff

After last week's column about 1st Lt. John Buffington, of Taneytown, was published ("Recalling Carroll's only recipient of Congressional Medal of Honor"), I was told of research suggesting there are more Medal of Honor winners who have connections to our county.

Shortly after the column appeared, I heard from readers from all over the world -- from here in Carroll County to Australia to South Carolina.

As much as I appreciated everyone's feedback and questions, perhaps the most valuable came from Laura Jowdy, an archivist from the Congressional Medal of Honor Society (www.cmohs.org.)

DC Moore Gallery Announces Acclaimed Painter George Tooker Dead at 90

NEW YORK, N.Y.- One of the most acclaimed painters of his generation, George Tooker (1920-2011) possessed an originality and depth of vision that is unsurpassed in modern American art. For over sixty years, he has been highly regarded for his luminous and often enigmatic work. His themes range from alienation and the dehumanizing aspects of contemporary society to personal meditations on the human condition. By reducing action and anecdote to subtle gestures and juxtapositions that carry meaning and express essential truths, Tooker created modern allegories without traditional narrative content. Tooker died at his home in Hartland, Vermont, on Sunday, March 27 at the age of ninety. The cause was kidney failure according to DC Moore ... More  http://www.artdaily.org/index.asp?int_sec=2&int_new=46129
