Barred owl's silent gaze speaks volumes

The barred owl's eyes are locked in their sockets. The bird must turn its head to see left or right.  Credit: Mike Parr / American Bird Conservancy

On the Wing / By Michael Burke

Like a camouflaged soldier at attention, the big bird stood unmoving and nearly unseen in the bare oak. I took a step closer, and its head rotated slightly. I found myself looking into a pair of penetrating dark eyes. It hesitated a moment, then noiselessly alit. A small stream had already separated us, but that natural barrier wasn't enough. The bird needed to put a safer distance between us.

Largely creatures of the night, owls are usually quiet and still during daylight. With cryptic colors of brown, white and black, they easily blend into the mottled patterns of bark and branches. No sound, no movement, protective coloration: These birds are tough to spot.

The barred owl (Strix varia) that perceived me as a threat was no exception. Barred owls are relatively large, standing upright at 18 inches. They have the bulky build we associate with typical owls and weigh 1.5 pounds. The rounded wings stretch to 40 inches. A dozen shades of brown are irregularly broken by white lines, patches, streaks and scallops. The visual result is a bird that's hard to see in spite of its impressive dimensions.

An owl's eyes are compelling. Like cats, dogs, humans and other predators, barred owls have eyes in the front of their heads, not along the side like most songbirds. Furthermore…  http://www.bayjournal.com/article.cfm?article=4020

DAYHOFF: Items from history remind me of things for which I'm thankful

EAGLE ARCHIVE By Kevin Dayhoff

Is there something in the air these days? Or did I miss a memo?

It seems that, recently, not a day goes by in which we are not deluged with bad news about the economy, politics, the economy, higher taxes, government deficits, international turmoil or just folks in the news acting like they are one french fry short of Happy Meal.

I used to ask if there was something in the water, but Jeff Glass, the Westminster director of public works, always corrected me with a smile: "No, Kevin, there must be something in the air, the water is fine. Got that?"

OK, I get it.

And something else I "get" is that we have many things for which to be thankful, and I should focus on that.

It used to be easier. I recall a time when a fellow elected official criticized me in a public meeting for being an eternal Pollyanna. Gee, I guess I'll take that criticism. I've heard worse things said about me.

[…]

So in the interest of mental health -- mine and yours -- I'll focus on things to be thankful for:

I'm thankful Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan are not dating.

I'm thankful that I did not watch the Oscar ceremonies.

[…]

First, on March 3, our nation celebrated the 80th anniversary of Congress enacting "The Star-Spangled Banner" -- written by Carroll County's native son, Francis Scott Key -- as our official national anthem. President Herbert Hoover signed the legislation into law on March 3, 1931…  http://www.explorecarroll.com/opinion/5216/items-history-remind-me-things-which-im-thankful/

Kevin Dayhoff The Tentacle: SCOTUS Westboro Decision - A Victory for Free Speech?

March 4, 2011

A Victory for Free Speech?
By a vote of 8-1, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a long awaited decision Wednesday over the collision of free speech, common sense and decency and our right to privacy in the case of Albert Snyder v. Fred W. Phelps, Sr., and the Westboro Baptist Church.

The Supreme Court ruled against the father of Westminster native Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder, whose March 10, 2006, funeral was picketed by members of the Kansas-based church. Corporal Snyder was 20 years-old when he died March 3, 2006, in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.

The irony abounds that the Westboro band of graceless sociopaths have chosen over the years to disparage and heap emotional abuse on families at the funerals of the very men and women in uniform, who have died defending the right of these creeps to exercise their right to free speech.

The controversy that initiated the test of the limits of free speech began shortly after Snyder’s death. In a paroxysmal milieu, the Snyder family is an otherwise unlikely fulcrum for all this drama... http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=4265

Samuel Barber - Adagio for Strings, op.11. Uncut

Wherligig to play at the Shamrock Restaurant in Thurmont, Maryland in March

Dear Wherligig friends,

Another year has gone by and Wherligig will once again perform at the Shamrock Restaurant in Thurmont, Maryland, http://www.shamrockrestaurant.com/, for St. Patty's Day!

For those of you who have not been to the Shamrock before, this venue is a lovely family-run restaurant in the foothills of the Catoctin Mountains.  The Fitzgerald family who runs it is both first and second generation Irish, and their menu is deliciously authentic.

Performance times are as follows:

Monday, March 14--- 5:30pm to 8:30pm
Wednesday March 16--- 5:30pm to 9 pm
Thursday March 17--- 11:30am to 2:30pm and 4:45pm to 9:15pm
Sunday March 20--- 12:30 to 4:30pm

We will also continue our tradition of performing at the Piney Run Park and Nature Center Coffeehouse during the St. Patty's shenanigans.  This will take place on Tuesday, March 15 at 7pm. Please call 410-795-6043 for reservations.

As many of you know, our fiddler Ryan is in graduate school on the west coast. We are excited that he will be able to join us for all of our performances this St. Patty's! Come join us and say hi to Ryan before he returns to his pile of books and papers! We look forward to seeing you!
