Westminster, MD, February 26, 2011 - - I was working at Off Track Art today and slipped over to Giulianova Groceria, 11 E. Main St. in Westminster, MD (click: Restaurants Giulianova Groceriahttp://www.brothersun.biz/index.html) to grab a sandwich.

When I got back to the Off Track Art studio, I was curious as to what I have posted over the years about Billy Schroeder and his fabulous restaurant.  I did a search on Westminster Maryland Online for all my posts about Billy and Giulianova.  Please enjoy: http://kevindayhoffwestgov-net.blogspot.com/search/label/Restaurants%20Giulianova%20Groceria

Billy has a great cooking class. Give him a call at (410) 876-7425 for more information.

According to Billy’s web site, “A classically trained chef by the U.S. Army, Bill is a licensed meat cutter, sous chef, saucier, banquet chef, executive chef, and is the sole proprietor of Giulianova in downtown Westminster. On top of that, he is proficient on the 12-string guitar.

“Bill has been a member of the Knights of Columbus since 1975, and is a religious education teacher at St. John's Catholic Church in Westminster. He is a follower of Saint Francis and spent a short time as a Fransican seminary student. His other religions include Baltimore Orioles Baseball, the Beatles, and an unhealthy obsession with the Three Stooges.

“Happily married for 24 years to his wife Jane, Bill is the father of a pair of daughters Clare and Beth. You can hear his voice through the laughter on his commercials on WTTR AM 1470.

He also sponsors the Giulianova Green and Gold Tailgate show, the official pre-game show of McDaniel College football and basketball on WTTR's broadcasts, and he has happily fed more than his fair share of Bair Stadium tailgaters.

“Opened in 1986 by Tony D'Eugenio, Giulianova has been a cornerstone of downtown Westminster's Main Streetcommunity for two decades, serving the town's Italian grocery needs.

“Bill Schroeder bought the store from Tony in the summer of 2003. While the line of ethnic foods has greatly expanded, Bill has never deviated from the principle of selecting the finest quality Italian goods for Giulianova's customers.

“The hoagies are the same as the day the doors opened in 1986, that is to say, they are still the best in town. The lasagnas, sauces, and other products produced in the store are derived from the tradition passed down by Mama D'Eugenio. After handing them down to her son Tony, she was more than happy to share them with Bill.

“Don't bother driving to PhiladelphiaNew York, or evenBaltimore. Giulianova has been, and will be your source for the finest Italian goods, right in your backyard!”

Phil Grout’s exhibition at Birdie's Cafe Gallery in Westminster ended on January 2, 2011 after a well-received two-month showing.

Grout, an award-winning photojournalist, fine art photographer appeared for the opening of a retrospective show of his work on November 5, 2010 at Birdie's Café 233 East Main Street, Westminster, MD 21157 - http://www.birdiescoffee.com/

The show titled “44/40,” spanned over four decades of Grout’s work, from Vietnam to Africa, Plains Georgia, to Carroll County; and includes almost 70 pieces of work.  (See also: http://www.scribd.com/doc/41131999/Phil-Grout-award-winning-photojournalist-to-appear-at-Birdie%E2%80%99s-Cafe-Gallery-in-Westminster)

Mom, Apple Pie and Baseball
One of the sure signs that winter’s icy-cold grip will soon give way to warmer temperatures and spring flowers is the opening of Baltimore Orioles’ spring training.

Although some of my best childhood memories growing up in Carroll County came from listening to Orioles baseball on WTTR radio in Westminster – I’m not a rabid sports fan. In my family that job is held firmly by my wife. The only occasions in which I have ever heard my otherwise mild-mannered quiet wife, the child of generations of pastors, raise her voice, is when she watches sports.

As a matter of fact, my renewed interest in following the Baltimore sports teams, golf or other more esoteric sporting events such as the Le Tour de France, is a result of the entertaining thrill of watching my wife watch sports.

So, as you may now understand, no winter snowbird hiatus in Florida is complete without the obligatory stopover at the Ed Smith Stadium and sports complex in Sarasota.

And you may already be aware, there is something affirming, if not wonderfully distracting about baseball, especially when you put the national pastime into the context of our nation continuing to strike out with a malingering economic malaise that has been prolonged and exacerbated by the faltering economic errors and parade of foul balls emanating from Washington.

Baseball has always been a favorite topic for many history buffs. It has everything to warm the keyboard of a writer including summertime, arcane statistics, intrigue, and colorful characters and events... http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=4246

Kevin Dayhoff The Tentacle: In The Line of Fire…

February 16, 2011

In The Line of Fire…
Less than a month after it was reported on TheTentacle.com that deaths of on-duty law enforcement officers in 2010 spiked, comes the news that 11 police officers were killed in the line of duty in January.

To refresh your memory, in “Remembering Those in Harm’s Way – published December 29, 2010, the column carried the haunting news that “a total of 160 law enforcement officers nationwide died in the line of duty during 2010, according to the report by the NLEOMF, [National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund] follow(ing) a two-year decline and comes on the heels of 2009 which saw a 50-year low of 117 police officer fatalities.”

In a disturbing news account, on January 25, 2011, Fox News reported that 11 police officers were shot in January – in just 24 hours – nationwide, “Authorities are worried a recent wave of police officer shootings may not be a coincidence…”

“According to National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, an organization that tracks police casualties; there have already been as many officer deaths in January 2011 as there were in January of last year. The organization reported that officer deaths were up 43 percent in 2010 compared to 2009,” Fox reported... http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=4233

True Crime

"True Grit" starring Clint Eastwood
February 15, 2011

I'm watching "True Crime" the mystery crime drama, released March 19, 1999, starring Clint Eastwood as a journalist, Steve Everett, an Oakland journalist recovering from alcoholism, with a less than desirable personality, covering the execution of prisoner on death row, who is about to be executed.

The movie is based on a 1997 novel by Andrew Klavan and the plot involves the newspaper writer, played by Eastwood, discovers that the inmate accused of the murder for which he is sentenced to be executed, is innocent.
