Heather Hodge, Westminster, MD: Her repurposed creations have delighted Festival of Wreaths visitors. She has some surprises in store for this show.

Joy Miller, Port Deposit, MD: Joy transforms car and truck hoods and gas tanks into garden furniture. She adorns old windows with fused glass and considers the landfill as her answer to the commercial craft store.

Roger Miller, Taneytown, MD: Roger’s extraordinary “windmill wreath” was a crowd favorite during our recent Festival of Wreaths and we eagerly await his sculptural additions to this exhibits.

Beverly Reidinger, Myersville, MD: Beverly garnered awards with her recycled refrigerator doors at the National Building Museum in D.C.

Virginia Sperry, Eldersburg: Virginia has been using car parts such as water pumps and adorning them with polymer clay to create something very feminine and delicate. She will also exhibit her newest art form, posing the rejected object in a composition and creating photographs that give recyclables artistic dignity.

The Trashy Women Collective, Perryville, MD: This eclectic group creates everything from sculptural forms to wearables.

The Carroll Arts Center is pleased to jump on the “go-green” bandwagon for its next exhibit. “Rejected to Perfected: Fine Art from Recyclables,” will be on view in the Tevis Gallery from June 10 through August 6.

Western Civilizations’ throw-away society had its beginnings in the Italian Renaissance when Humanist writers espoused facts that Mother Nature would constantly replenish her resources. The early 20th century Italian Futurist painter, Marinetti, wrote a manifest to the movement that applauded industrial pollution as proof that mankind was moving forward in a positive direction.

Enter the 21st century and industrialized nations are looking back, not to the Italian Renaissance or industry but to those countries, while appearing primitive, have been practicing sustainable living.

“Rejected to Perfected” will feature artists whose canvas and media are not purchased at the art store, whose pigment will not pollute water sources but bring awareness to the beauty and functionality that can be found in the landfill, recycle bins and dumpsters. These creative artists think out of the box. “Renew-Reuse-Recycle” is their artistic credo.

In addition, there will be a few other twists such as displaying the incredible bottle cap sculpture of “Starry Night” on loan from Finksburg Public Library, and we will be selling copies of “Do Martians Recycle” by Sharon Gribbon-Lindemon. The show has been generously sponsored by The Maryland Sustainable Living Fair.

I am just starting a "page" on Facebook called Byrdcall Studio. I'm posting photos of the art work I am working on or just finishing just for the fun of showing off. I'm not really sure how all this Facebook stuff works, but I think if you click on the link below, you'll go to that site. You can click on "like" or "add to my page's favorites" and hopefully you'll get an occasional (weekly?) update on what going on in the studio...like classes, projects, weird things I'm working on, and some very nice things I'm working on. 3. New Endeavors on the Horizon

One of my goals for this summer is to work more closely with the galleries and shops who represent my work, and to be more timely in creating commissioned work for customers. One difficult decision I made is to leave the partnership at Off Track Art in downtown Westminster at the end of June. I am sorry to not be part of the only Artists' Coop in town. It is growing and changing every month. Let's all keep in touch with OTA as they host bi-monthly guest artist receptions and feature completely new work every six months.

Because you are receiving this email, I know that we can stay in touch. You know where to find me...by email, by phone, though my web site, make an appointment to come by the studio anytime convenient to us both (which will be LOTS of time!), and now you know how to find me at shows in the coming months.

GUEST ARTIST, May/June: Jodi OʼConnell

Off Track Artʼs current guest artist, Jodi OʼConnell, is a Carroll County painter. An art therapist

for many years, Jodi now devotes her time to decorative painting and wall murals. Her true

love is to create art. Many of her paintings are of the beautiful, ever changing landscape

around her, and how light effects subject matter found in nature. See and enjoy these quiet

and colorful paintings before the end of June.

GUEST ARTIST, July/August: Virginia Sperry

Off Track Art in July is proud to present an installation of sculpture and photography by Virginia

Sperry. Virginia is a local sculptor and photographer. A self-professed dumpster diver, she

delights in finding objects that have lived beyond their primary use and combine them to create

cool sculptures. Welding steel is the latest of her artistic passions. Virginia has been welding

since 2003 when she took a metal fabrication class at the Maryland Institute College of Art. "I

like to think that I am glueing with lightning." Her sculptures run from abstract to figurative, with

a life-sized giraffe being the largest piece she has finished.

In addition to three dimensional sculpture, Virginia is intrigued with photographing unusual

things in her life. "Computers and digital technology have turned photography into instant

gratification. Because my sculptures can take several months to finish I enjoy being able to

take and download photos in the blink of an eye."

Virginia lives in Eldersburg with her husband, two dogs and two cats.

OUT and ABOUT:

Westminsterʼs fun and popular Art-in-the-Park happens on Saturday, June 5, 10 AM - 4 PM.

Look for artists of Off Track Art who will have booths there this year. Offerings include jewelry,

paintings, prints, photography and more, by Kevin Dayhoff, Charlotte Laslo, Mary Decker,

Susan Williamson, and Melinda Byrd.

Linda Van Hart during May & June is living on a working llama farm (www.lamahof.com) in

central Switzerland, sketching and taking photos to assist in a new line of pin designs. The

renovation to her studio should be complete upon her arrival home to begin sculpting the new

works. June 11-13 Linda is wait-listed for The Mountain Heritage Show in Harper's Ferry.

Linda,the Visual Arts Coordinator for Common Ground at McDaniel College, invites you to

check out their classes at www.commongroundonthehill.com. She is teaching “Reticulation

and Hot Connections,” week II afternoons. Her article about Reticulation was published along

with pictures of her Savannah and Harriet Tubman series, and containers by her mentor, John

T. Fix, in the Spring Metals Guild of Maryland Newsletter. She is on the Board of Directors of

both Common Ground and MGM.

Linda will display her metalsmithing and jewelry at The Roots Music and Art Festival, July

12-13 at Carroll County Farm Museum.

Lindaʼs mixed media collage and metalsmithing on display at The Rice Gallery on McDaniel

Campus, July 4-16. Selections from her collection of jewelry are available at Unique Jewelry in

Westminster.

Gail Elwell’s work can be seen at the Blue Elephant Art Center, 4A West 5th St., in Frederick,

MD. The exhibit, "Addiction and Art," features the Artists and Editors from the critically

acclaimed book and runs from June 19th to June 27.

Cathy Sawdey provides another reason to visit Frederick. Cathy shows two of her drawings

as part of the regional juried exhibit at the Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center in

Frederick, Md., on display June 5 through July 18.

OFF TRACK ART Bids Farewell to Melinda Byrd:

Melinda will be missed by her partners and patrons, both for her wonderful artful offerings as

well as her professional and creative spirit. Best of everything to her as she continues her

work in other venues in the area.

Below is her message to everyone.

Dear Friends of OTA,

I am sad to say that as of the end of June, I will no longer be a partner of OTA. I have mixed feelings

about this decision as I have made many close friends here over the past 16 months. Yet during that

time, I have increased the number of galleries and shops who represent me as well as in the number of

commissions I receive for custom work...not to mention the list of projects I want to do when "I can find

the time." It has simply boiled down to determining how many hours there are in a day and how can I

best accomplish the goals at hand. Please know that I am still here--in the community--and available to

create art for you, and I welcome your company at Byrdcall Studio in Woodbine (by appt.

410-549-4889). Please keep in touch. Email me if you'd like me to add you to my studio email list so

Not withstanding the above picture, a few of the reasons I am not attending the Preakness today… And a few reasons I’d like to attend. I mean it is on the “A” list of Maryland - Baltimore must-attend cultural events.

Ah hem, well, this is not the staid, curmudgeon Preakness – or publication of H. L. Mencken, now is it. I guess that is a good thing – or a whatever.

Oh snap. Ya know, I'd head on down to the Preakness, but I don't seem to have a hat for the occasion.

The bikini contest pictures start at picture number three… Okay, moving on… This looks a Steffenesque view of the Preakness. Photograph number 6 - - Reason number two I did not go to the Preakness; I don't have the legs I never had.

There are perp-walk pictures sprinkled throughout the spread. Seems some folks in the past have misbehaved in the Preakness infield festivities. I’m shocked I tell you, shocked I say.

Me, I liked the hat pictures. No seriously, I really like the horsey-set fashion and hat pictures… Check out picture 33 might be my favorite – among many favorites.

The pics of the U.S. Navy's parachute team, also known as the "Leap Frogs,” are fun.

And yes folks, the day is a veritable sports lollapalooza. The pictures of the volleyball match in the infield start at number 23, followed quickly by some great pictures of ZZ Top. Picture number 29 is pretty cool.

Oh, how sophisticated… No further comment on picture number 49.

The few pictures starting at number 51 appear to portray someone who is hoping to get a Darwin award… The horses are on the track. Some of the horses’ asses may be found in the infield.

Another "Running of the Urinals" pic at 64.

Seems Westminster folks have figured somewhat prominently in the Preakness infield festivities in the past.

In picture number 67 “Aimee Gable of Westminster downs a vodka, cranberry and peach schnapps concoction supplied by Peter Perrine of Lancaster, Pa., on the infield at Pimlico Race Course. Several friends took turns at the spigot on the morning of the Preakness.” I wonder if Ms. Gable gave her Mom a copy of that picture for Mother’s Day?

Picture number 68…Oh, nevermind.

Picture number 80, ugh, just ugh.

Between you and me, the photographs are technically and artistically quite good. A news photographer can only take pictures of what they see… I’ve love to attend the Preakness some day if only to take a bunch of pictures. As for the infield, I’m no longer as young as I never was.
