Guy Babylon, 52, died Wednesday evening in Los Angeles, California, according to family sources and Elton John’s official website.

He was born on December 20, 1956, in New Windsor, the son of Graham and Mary Babylon, owners of the Babylon Vault Company, a Carroll County business that has manufactured burial vaults since 1930.

After he attended Francis Scott Key High School he earned his BFA in music composition from the University of South Florida. In 1980, six months after graduation he moved to California, where he quickly established himself as an accomplished keyboardist and composer and respected session musician.

Babylon, as a young man, was known to be a national level swimmer and a family member noted with pride that he once beat Mark Spitz, of Olympic swimming fame. Babylon died of an apparent heart attack while swimming.

Elton John, who according to his official web site, is on holiday in Nice, France, said: “I am devastated and heartbroken at the death of Guy Babylon. Guy played over 1000 shows with me, and we worked together on The Road To El Dorado, Aida, Billy Elliot, Lestat and Gnomeo and Juliet, as well as on countless albums.

“He was one of the most brilliant musicians I ever knew, a true genius, a gentle angel - and I loved him so much. David and I send our deep condolences to Kathy, Max, Ben and Jessica, to Guy's parents, to Kathy's parents and to all his immediate loved ones.’

The web site reports, “Guy's first performance with Elton was for a benefit at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles in July 1988, and his first world tour as part of the Elton John Band began two months later in Miami, Florida.

“Guy became lead keyboardist on May 26, 1992, and has been the only synth man on stage since the Walden Woods Benefit Concert in the fall of 1993.”

When he was in seventh grade, Guy Babylon and several of his New Windsor friends formed a band.

They performed at the New Windsor carnival, gave small concerts by Babylon’s pool and won many talent shows in Carroll County. The band rehearsed wherever it could.

Those practices would set the foundation years later for a more famous gig for Babylon: backing up Elton John.

Babylon, John’s lead keyboardist, died Wednesday night in California. He was 52.

I’m watching Maryland Public Television – “Inventing La: The Chandlers and Their Times”

It is a fascinating tale of family, journalistic, and political intrigue… Also of note is the dynamic that in the very early days, up until the late 1950s to early 1960s, the media bias of, at least the LA Times, was conservative, pro-business and Republican… Part of the story of the documentary is the transition of the paper from conservative to straight-down-the-middle, if not a liberal tilt…

The MPT web site says:

At the September 28, 2009 meeting of the Westminster mayor and Common Council, Mayor Kevin Utz conducted a public hearing on the 2009 Comprehensive Plan for Westminster. Planning director Tom Beyard explained that the comprehensive plan was the culmination of two years of work and that it was due to be adopted by October 1, 2009 in order to conform with Maryland State law.

The development of the plan, which began in earnest in October 2007, was broken into three phases, Beyard said. The first phase was a citizen survey, followed by additional public outreach, followed by the drafting phase.

Beyard advised that the municipal planned growth footprint and the planned water and sewer service area had not changed since its boundaries were agreed upon with the county government two years ago.

The plan did incorporate for the first time a water resource and municipal growth element. Both of which are new mandates from the Maryland General Assembly.

The city was “probably one of the first (municipalities in the state) to submit the water resources element… many municipalities had asked for an extension,” said Beyard.

Council president Damian Halstad remarked, “I’d just like to highlight that the state found it to be an incredibly thorough plan… very detailed…”

Later in the meeting the council voted to adopt the plan after more discussion of how proud the council and staff were to have received such good feedback from the state on how well the plan was developed and written.

Westminster City Hall - The meeting of the Westminster mayor and Common Council last Monday began with plenty of smiles, but the mood quickly turned somber as a discussion on budget woes dominated the balance of the evening.

Mayor Kevin Utz conducted a public hearing on the 2009 Comprehensive Plan for Westminster. Later in the meeting the council voted to adopt the plan after more discussion of how proud the council and staff were to have received such good feedback from the state on how well the plan was developed and written.

Council president Damian Halstad brought up “Budget Amendment No. 1” for adoption. Utz explained “this reduction in the budget came as a direct result of the governor’s reduction in highway user revenues…”

Other council member joined-in as it was explained that the state Board of Public Works recently voted to not send $818,000 in revenue due the city from taxes collected by the state designated for the city’s coffers – in order to balance the state budget.

A press release describing the budget amendment explained, “The State of Maryland reduced the Highway User Revenues from $747,580 to $74,758 and Police Aid from a budgeted $400,000 to $254,826.”

City administrator Marge Wolf said that she expects the state to withhold an additional $329,000 from the city in January.

According to the press release: “Among the cuts approved by the Common Council were cancellations of the paving contract, technology purchases and a police vehicle which totaled $267,950 in capital expenditures; diversion of the $100,000 contingency reserve to operating accounts…

“… conversion of $215,000 of Union Street property proceeds to operating accounts; reduction of departmental operating budgets by $155,086; revision of the take home vehicle policy to institute a partial employee payback of costs by $15,768; and captured $65,000 in savings from reduced tipping fees.”

Wolf tried to put a bright face on a bleak picture at that by remarking that “this is not the best of times, but it doesn’t mean we don’t have good projects underway.”

As if on cue, Lori Graham, representing the business community, gave a report on the “Midnight Madness,” downtown business celebration held in conjunction with Fallfest. She also gave an update on plans for the upcoming community ‘electric’ Christmas parade.

“The community has its share of problems but we still come together to do good things,” said Graham.

Newly released book on the City of Westminster now available at the The Shop at Cockey's This long awaited photographic history of Westminster is now available in the newly expanded museum shop and book store of the Historical Society of Carroll County. Images of America:Westminster, by Historical Society Curator of Collections Catherine Baty, features over 190 historic photographs of Westminster covering its growth from a small crossroad to a thriving city. The book can be found in The Shop at Cockey's for $21.99. Westminster joins Farming in Carroll County by Lyndi McNulty, which was released earlier this year. Also available are volumes on Carroll County, Taneytown and Sykesville. Society members receive a 10% discount on purchases in the shop. Dear Friends:

The Westminster Police Department and Time Out Sports Grille will be co-hosting a great new event at Town Mall in Westminster on Saturday, October 3rd from noon to 6:00 p.m. to support my good friends at Special Olympics Maryland.

The event, called the “Slush ‘N Slide”, is an outdoor festival suitable for kids of all ages and it’s a great warm-up for the Polar Bear Plunge which will be here before we know it.

During the festival we will be making an attempt to set a record by building the world’s largest snowball (as in snow cone). Following our attempt, hearty souls – hereafter known as “Sliders” – will take a turn sliding down a 28-foot inflatable waterslide into our record-breaking creation.

BRRRRR!! The privilege of sliding is reserved for those that raise a minimum of $50 in pledges for Special Olympics. Yep, I’m there!!

In addition to the Slide there will be tons of great things to do. Carnival games, face painting, wing and watermelon eating contests – even a chance for one lucky slider to win a new Harley-Davidson motorcycle!

Live music will be provided by “The Reagan Years”, a regional 80’s band with a huge following. Great food will be available, as well as a beer garden for those adults in the crowd.

A variety of personalities will be on hand to include Mayor Kevin Utz (also a slider) and 98 Rock’s Theo, Stash and Sarah “The Queen” Fleischer. A $5 donation to Special Olympics is requested of all non-Sliders who wish to attend the festivities. More details about this incredible event are available on-line at http://www.slushnslide.com/.

Of all the presidents of the United States, the one which Frederick and Carroll Counties may have literally the closest connection is President Dwight David Eisenhower, known affectionately as “Ike.”

Just recently my family and I went on a history exploration trip to nearby Gettysburg to visit the new Gettysburg Battlefield visitors’ center and the Eisenhower National Historic Site, which is adjacent to the battlefield.

In years past, it would have been called a “day trip,” however, the term “staycation” has in recent years crept into our lexicon. Even the Merriam-Webster dictionary now recognizes the word to mean “a vacation spent at home or nearby.”

President Eisenhower lived on a farm and raised Black Angus cattle about 10 miles above the Maryland-Pennsylvania border.
