The song ‘Wicked Game,’ about obsessive love, was featured on Isaak’s third album which debuted in 1989, “Heart Shaped World.”

The music video, “directed by Herb Ritts and featuring model Helena Christensen, cemented its legendary status and contributed to its overwhelming popularity.”

The original guitar part, which is now incredibly recognizable for its haunting melancholy, was written by James Calvin Wilsey. At first Isaak didn’t like it, but the producers got excited over the lick and decided to run with it. Seeing that it was gaining traction in the studio, Isaak put some lyrics to it.

According to one version of the story, “A woman called Isaak late at night, inviting herself over with the explicit suggestion of ‘talking until you're no longer able to stand up.’ The song captures that intense, often destructive pull towards someone you know you shouldn't be with…”

According to multiple commentaries, Isaak's "Wicked Game" “originated from a late-night phone call from a woman offering a ‘talk’ that was clearly a euphemism for something more, inspiring Isaak to write about the dangerous attraction to someone ‘not necessarily good for you.’

“Though initially a sleeper hit, it gained massive fame after being featured in David Lynch's 1990 film Wild at Heart, propelled by its iconic, haunting guitar work by James Wilsey and its steamy music video, becoming a signature song for its seductive vibe and themes of obsessive love.”

Los Amigos Mexican Restaurant, 205 Frederick Rd, Thurmont, MD

We really enjoyed Los Amigos Mexican Restaurant, 205 Frederick Rd, Thurmont, MD 21788 on Sunday evening 13Aug2023. Our server, Leslie N, was very nice, conversational, and attentive. We really enjoyed our food. We shared a Burrito de Carnitas.

 

The restaurant is well lit and fun - nicely decorated and obviously well-maintained. The folks that work there obviously  like the restaurant. The staff was very welcoming and friendly. The food was great with great prices, and a large parking lot – right off Rte 15. We look forward to returning soon.

 Earlier Caroline had played in a Westminster Municipal Band concert in the Thurmont Memorial Park, just off 116 East Main Street, Thurmont, MD 21788, at the Thurmont Trolley Park. The band concert was great – and enjoyed by many folks from around town who came out on a beautiful Sunday evening to enjoy the music.

 We really liked the 1.3-acre park. It was well maintained and picturesque. It is obvious that Thurmont loves the park – and that folks enjoy it. The park comes complete with a bubbling stream that runs through the park – not far from a memorial pavilion that honors local folks who have served in the military and fought in a nation’s wars to maintain the freedoms and quality of life we enjoy. It was a great evening, and we look forward to returning to Thurmont.

 The Thurmont Trolley Park. We were intrigued about the Trolley Trail Park. According to the Thurmont website, “The Thurmont Trolley Trail is a .8 mile trail installed over the former trolley tracks that serviced Thurmont in the 1900’s.

 “The Town of Thurmont also acquired and displays one of the trolley cars that was once utilized in Thurmont’s history. The building that was once used to house all the electrical components that operated the trolley sits at the beginning of the trail on East Main Street. 

 “The Town of Thurmont and the Thurmont Lions Club has installed murals on the building depicting the history of Thurmont...

 “From 1908 to 1954, Thurmont was the "end of the line" for the trolley system that traveled from Frederick to Thurmont. During its hay day in the 1920's, the Hagerstown and Frederick Railway (H &F) carried 3.8 million people per year.

 “However, with great strides in the world of transportation, the demands for the trolley dwindled and the H&F made its final trip to Thurmont in 1954 and the tracks were removed. The existing trail begins at the historical trolley car and promotes a glimpse at Thurmont’s historical transportation services. Today, the trail is heavily used by residents and visitors for hiking, jogging, biking, and enjoying nature.”

On Wednesday evening, December 21, 2022 Caroline and I attended the annual Blues Christmas and Community Homeless Memorial Service at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Westminster. The service will be the topic of the article I an writing for this weekend in the Carroll County Times. During the service I was reminded of one of my favorite pictures of Rev. Erin Snell.

The other day Erin had reposted a St. Paul's United Church of Christ post with a picture of candles on her page. The caption for the picture explained: “We will have our annual BLUES CHRISTMAS AND COMMUNITY HOMELESS MEMORIAL SERVICE on Wednesday, December 21 (Winter Solstice) at 7:00pm.

“This service is for people struggling with the challenges of the holidays for whatever reason. And, with the help of various community agencies and local law enforcement, we will remember homeless people who have died this past year.

“This service will be live in the Sanctuary and available on Zoom at the usual Sunday worship Zoom link.

Tapestry topped the U.S. album chart for 15 weeks in 1971, and remained on the charts for more than six years – featuring such songs as "It's Too Late" and "I Feel the Earth Move"

Of course, as a writer, I was immediately drawn to singer-songwriter music. Music performed by artists who tell stories by writing and performing their own material.

Tapestry reminded me of Southern Gothic literature. An article by David Browne in Rolling Stone published February 10, 2021 explained, “Similarly, the narrator of “It’s Too Late” is almost matter of fact when surveying the end of a relationship; she sounds rational, not distraught. For the 50th anniversary, an album outtake, “Out in the Cold,” has been resurrected after first appearing as a bonus track on a 1999 CD reissue. A confessional about being unfaithful to a lover and paying the price, it feels rational and adult (if not totally empowered)…” (‘Tapestry’ at 50: Why Carole King’s Masterpiece Still Challenges Us - With its masterful songcraft and backstory of personal reinvention, King’s 1971 landmark remains one of pop’s greatest declarations of independence…)

Some of the best examples singer-songwriters include artists such as Bob Dylan, "Mixed-Up Confusion" (1962); Paul McCartney, "Love Me Do"/"P.S. I Love You" (1962); John Lennon, Chuck Berry, Joni Mitchell, “Urge for Going”); and Carole King, "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" (1960.)

However I first became enthralled with the genre as a result of the release of Carole King’s “Tapestry.
