The Women Who Rode Miles on Horseback to Deliver Library Books

The Women Who Rode Miles on Horseback to Deliver Library Books - Librarians are amazing. BY ANIKA BURGESS AUGUST 31, 2017

I was looking for Erin Snell in the pictures…

FTA: They were known as the “book women.” They would saddle up, usually at dawn, to pick their way along snowy hillsides and through muddy creeks with a simple goal: to deliver reading material to Kentucky’s isolated mountain communities.

The Pack Horse Library initiative was part of President Franklin Roosevelt’s Works Progress Administration (WPA), created to help lift America out of the Great Depression, during which, by 1933, unemployment had risen to 40 percent in Appalachia. Roving horseback libraries weren’t entirely new to Kentucky, but this initiative was an opportunity to boost both employment and literacy at the same time.

[…]

Old magazines and newspapers were cut and pasted into scrapbooks with particular themes—recipes, for example, or crafts. One such scrapbook, which still is held today at the FDR Presidential Library & Museum in Hyde Park, New York, contains recipes pasted into a notebook with the following introduction: “Cook books are popular. Anything to do with canning or preserving is welcomed.”

VOCAL TRANCE: Aurosonic & Susana - Weather The Storm (Extended Intro Mix...

#amwriting Listening to all Trance. #Trance

Aurosonic & Susana - Weather The Storm:

https://www.facebook.com/susanavocalist

As far as my eyes can see
The snow stretches endlessly
The road we once paved now disappeared
Revealing my deepest fears

Winter never felt so lonely
It's cold as ice this time around
Loneliness has found its way
Without you by my side
Silence is here to stay

But I know that seasons change
I know we'll see another day
Just have to wait it out
And find ourselves a safe place in the storm

I know the sun will rise
We'll get to hold each other tight
Just have to trust that only love
Can weather the storm

Weather the storm [2x]

Things look different in the light of the morning sun
I feel the promise of a brand new dawn
The life we once knew is a dream that's so far away
But we can make it to a brighter day

Winter never felt so lonely
It's cold as ice this time around
Loneliness has found its way
Without you by my side
Silence is here to stay

But I know that seasons change
I know we'll see another day
Just have to wait it out
And find ourselves a safe place in the storm

I know the sun will rise
We'll get to hold each other tight
Just have to trust that only love
Can weather the storm

Weather the storm [3x]

But I know that seasons change
I know we'll see another day
Just have to wait it out
And find ourselves a safe place in the storm

I know the sun will rise
We'll get to hold each other tight
Just have to trust that only love
Can weather the storm

Weather the storm [2x]

The storm [2x]

But I know that seasons change
I know we'll see another day
Just have to wait it out
And find ourselves a safe place in the storm

I know the sun will rise
We'll get to hold each other tight
Just have to trust that only love
Can weather the storm

DamNation | The Problem with Hydropower

Tuesday, January 11, 2022: “DamNation” | The Problem with Hydropower - I watched at a documentary today about the evolution of our thinking about building dams for flood control and navigation purposes. In recent years much of our thinking has evolved to better understand that the benefit of the dams does not outweigh the damage to the environment. According to an introduction to the documentary, “This film explores the evolution of our national attitude from pride in big dams as engineering wonders to the growing awareness that our own future is bound to the life and health of wild rivers.

Remembering Those Who are Away:

Remembering Those Who are Away - Kevin Dayhoff, 24Dec2021: It is a tradition to leave a light in the window to remember folks who are away from home or have died. To remember the folks who have gone before us and helped pave the way for the quality of life and freedoms we enjoy today. We want them to know that they are missed, and we want to light the way for their memories and their soul to visit during the holidays.

The light comes with a silent prayer for their safe return and that someone has remained behind to tend to the home fires and wait for their return – to light the way until we meet again.

For many the Christmas season is tough enough. The season has become a vampire squid that has wrapped itself around our neck, annexed Thanksgiving and Halloween and turned November and December into an endurance contest of relentless responsibilities, expectations, and shallow end-of-the-year celebrations.

For whatever reason, contemporary American society seems to have turned a deaf ear and a blind eye to the grieving process and shoved it into a dark corner. Changes in the circumstances of our life are a natural part of our existence.

The holidays are a busy time, but never too busy to stop and ponder the benefits of all the blessings we enjoy as a result of a loved-one, friend, colleague, brother or sister in arms, or a family member that has left our side and greatly missed.

I often stress that folks who deal with death and tragedy on the job or have suffered a loss in their personal life - find a friend and ‘keep talking about it.’

J'Accuse 1919 full silent movie by Abel Gance (english subtitles)

October 9, 1921: “J’accuse” by Abel Gance

Next month, on October 9, 1921 is the anniversary of the French classic silent movie, “J’accuse.” This is not the movie with the title, ‘J’Accuse, (An Officer and a Spy,)” by Roman Polansky, that was released in August 2019, about the accusations against the French Jewish artillery officer Alfred Dreyfus in 1894. Owen Gleiberman wrote a great article about the Polansky movie, in “Variety”, on August 30, 2019. Find it here: https://variety.com/2019/film/reviews/jaccuse-an-office-and-a-spy-review-roman-polanski-1203319146/

The movie, released in the US in October 1919, is about “two men who love the same woman and meet in the trenches of the First World War. Their tale becomes a microcosm for the horrors of the war.” Find the entire movie on YouTube, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NiqKNwxL6oc

Which, in full transparency, I think is in the top-20 most compelling, yet undeniably and perpetually neurotic movies of all time. It certainly rivals the work of Ingmar Bergman’s work.

One of the most disturbing scenes – among many truly disturbing scenes, is the classic, “return of the dead,” sequence. It is best described by writer Kevin Brownlow, in his 1968 book, “The Parades Gone By.” Mr. Brownlow explains, “The sequence of the 'return of the dead' at the end of the film was shot in the south of France, using 2000 soldiers who had come back on leave.

Abel Gance, who both wrote and directed the movie, recalled, according to Brownlow, “The conditions in which we filmed were profoundly moving... These men had come straight from the Front – from Verdun – and they were due back eight days later. They played the dead knowing that in all probability they'd be dead themselves before long. Within a few weeks of their return, eighty per cent had been killed…

For the film's opening title, a large group of soldiers, filmed from above, is formed up to shape the letters J...A...C...C...U...S... E. In the middle of preparing the shot, a general asked Gance what was happening. Gance stalled until the shot was complete, and then explained to the startled general that he was "accusing the war... accusing men... accusing universal stupidity".

In the final scenes of the film, according to Brownlow, Gance's accusations, through the mouth of Jean Diaz, seem to be levelled against those who have not cared enough – the civilians who enjoyed another life, or those who profited from the war, or who simply forgot what it meant.

The soldiers risen from the dead are said to be content to return to their rest once reassured by the living that their sacrifice has not been in vain. Diaz's final accusation is made against the sun for being a mute witness to so much horror.

Asked whether he regarded J'accuse as a pacifist film, Gance replied: "I'm not interested in politics... But I am against war because war is futile. Ten or twenty years afterward, one reflects that millions have died and all for nothing. One has found friends among one's old enemies, and enemies among one's friends.

According to a preview of the movie on YouTube: J'accuse is a 1919 French silent film directed by Abel Gance. It juxtaposes a romantic drama with the background of the horrors of World War I, and it is sometimes described as a pacifist or anti-war film. Work on the film began in 1918, and some scenes were filmed on real battlefields. The film's powerful depiction of wartime suffering, and particularly its climactic sequence of the "return of the dead", made it an international success, and confirmed Gance as one of the most important directors in Europe.
