Lecture on the western cowboy art of E. William 'Bill' Gollings at McDaniel College, Oct. 13 Collector, author to speak at Peterson Hall event

Lecture on the western cowboy art of E. William 'Bill' Gollings at McDaniel College, Oct. 13 Collector, author to speak at Peterson Hall event

As a result of the collaboration of McDaniel professor Sue Bloom, local Westminster physician Dr. Dean Griffin and McDaniel College, a special talk on the western art of E. William Gollings will be held on Thursday evening October 13th in Peterson Hall at McDaniel College at 7 pm.

The premier authority on Gollings' work, Dr. William Ward, will be speaking.

According to Griffin and Bloom, Ward is a radiologist, who trained at the University of Maryland Medical School. He discovered the work of Gollings as he flew from his home in Laramie, Wyoming, to the remote populations of Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado and Utah, delivering medical care.

It was during his residency when Ward became friends with a gallery owner in Denver, according to Bloom and Griffin. Thus began many years of collecting the work of E. William Gollings, a true cowboy artist, who lived from 1878 to1932, in Wyoming.

Ward and his wife, Carole, have amassed the definitive collection of Gollings work and have arranged to donate over $5 million in Gollings work to the University of Wyoming Museum of Art.

Ward has published two books on Gollings' art and commissioned a bronze statue of Gollings to sit across the street from the Wyoming State Capitol. His philanthropy in the fields of art and medicine are widely known in the west.

E. William Gollings was known as “Paint Bill” during his lifetime and he worked in watercolor, oils and etching. He painted cowboys, Indians, wolves, livestock and ranchers. Many of his paintings went east with vacationers at dude ranches, selling for as little as $20.

Griffin said in a recent e-mail interview, “The lecturer is a friend of mine from Wyoming … Last year I traveled to Wyoming to hear him give this lecture to a group from the Cowboy Hall of Fame Museum in Oklahoma City.

“It was excellent,” said Griffin. Dr. Ward has quite an extensive collection. This artist and the lecturer are very well known in the southwest of the United States. Several of Gollings paintings are in the Grand Room of the Wyoming State House and there is a bronze statue of Bill Gollings on the lawn of the Wyoming State House.

“This is a rare opportunity for you to hear a great lecture on Cowboy Art. Dr Ward is very knowledgeable of the art and history of the southwest. I am pleased he has agreed to do this while visiting here in Westminster. My hat goes off to Professor Bloom who has made this possible.”

Thursday evening, Ward will talk about Gollings work and his own commitment to documenting Gollings' life and collecting his art work. The event is open to the public.

Corn Maze to Open in Westminster

Get lost this fall at the 2010 Carroll County Agriculture Center corn maze.

Authorities have identified the crop circles found outside of Westminster as the work of Carroll County Ag Center volunteers and not the work of space aliens.
~~~~~~
Beginning Friday, September 10, 2010, the Ag Center will feature over 2 miles of trails creatively carved out of acres of seven-foot tall corn just outside of Westminster.
It has been six years since a maze was artfully carved into the crop fields at the Ag Center.  In 2004, over 3,300 folks visited.
The theme of this year’s maze is a celebration of Carroll County’s agricultural heritage.  A cornucopia of grapes, an apple, a banana, pumpkin, and squash have carefully been carved into the field for hours of family fun.
Come test your navigational skills.  Get off the couch, turn off the TV, get out of the house and enjoy the fresh air and support a worthy cause, the Carroll County Agriculture Center, home of the nationally known Carroll County 4-H and FFA Fair.
Public hours are Friday and Saturday nights from 5 PM to 9 PM and Sunday afternoons from 2 PM to 6 PM.  The maze will be open weekends until October 31, 2010 and will feature a haunted maze on October 29th and 30th, 2010.
Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for ages 3 to 12.  Group prices and times are available, call 410 848-6704.
September 2010
Westminster Fallfest, Inc. P.O. Box 804, Westminster, MD 21158 www.westminsterfallfest.com August 28, 2004 Westminster Fallfest started in 1978 to promote the awareness for the renewal of the downtown shopping district, in which our fundraising efforts center today. During the 1980's volunteers that organized Fallfest realized excess funds from vendor fees and other activities. The volunteers decided to distribute these funds to support local charities. After receiving positive responses from charities, the volunteers decided to broaden their efforts. Over the years we have evolved into a multi-cultural and multifaceted organization known as Westminster Fallfest, Inc. Fallfest operates 12 months a year organizing and providing the community and local non-profit charities the opportunity to apply and be interviewed to receive excess proceeds from our various fundraising activities. Dear Friends of Fallfest,
Retrieved September 17, 2010
Westminster Fallfest, Inc. began as an autumn celebration in historic downtown Westminster, growing over time to operate throughout the year, sponsoring various fundraising events, all to benefit charities and service organizations within our community.
Our signature event is our annual Westminster Fallfest, Carroll County’s largest community charity event.  Each September, Fallfest draws over 40,000 people to historic downtown Westminster.  Families enjoy our festival midway and rides, while others come for the great food, unique shopping, and heart-stopping entertainment.  Our event begins with a parade, followed by four days of non-stop fun.
Fallfest is more than a festival midway or great place to find one of a kind crafts and gifts.  It’s an exciting time to share with our families and friends, and at the same time, give back to our great community.  Whether you join us for the fabulous food, the sights and sounds of our great entertainment, shopping, volunteering on-site, or providing vital sponsorship dollars to make the event happen—Westminster Fallfest is glad to have you!
