The Miracle on Main Street holiday event will be held throughout the day Saturday, Nov. 28, in Westminster.

Festivities begin with children carnival rides, 1-9 p.m. on the parking lot off Locust Street on the north side of Main Street.

At 2:30 p.m., the Carroll Arts Center, 91 W. Main St., will host a free Laurel & Hardy Film Festival. The films will conclude before 4:45 p.m. for the start of the Wishbone Mile benefit run, which benefits the Women's Initiative Supporting Health program.

Then, Santa will arrive during the Holiday Electric Parade at 5 p.m. The parade, which will follow Pennsylvania Avenue and Main Street to Longwell Avenue, includes 50 lighted floats, marching bands, horses, cars, marching units and Santa Claus.

Then, at Locust Lane Park after the parade, Mayor Kevin Utz, Santa and the crowd will light the city's Christmas tree while the Westminster Municipal Band will play holiday carols. Santa Claus will take up residence at his house on Distillery Drive after the tree-lighting ceremony.

Westminster's Recreation and Parks Department will host Santa's Treat in the gym at the Westminster Family Fitness Center (Old Armory), 11 Longwell Ave., at 6:30 p.m., with free games, crafts, activities and prizes.

And "Starlight Shopping" will be held 5-10 p.m. in many of downtown Westminster's shops and restaurants. At 9 p.m., a drawing for Holiday Shopping Spree winners will occur on the steps of the Family Fitness Center. People can register through Nov. 27 at participating stores.

The events are sponsored by the City of Westminster and the Greater Westminster Development Corporation's Main Street Committee.

Special Olympics of Maryland Fundraiser

Special Olympics of Maryland Fundraiser

Host: Westminster Police Dept.
Date: Saturday, October 3, 2009
Time: 12:00pm - 6:00pm
Location: Town Mall
Street: 400 N. Center Street
City/Town: Westminster, MD

A message from Westminster Police Chief Jeff Spaulding

Slush n slide with Chief Spaulding

Dear Friends:

The Westminster Police Department and Time Out Sports Grille will be co-hosting a great new event at Town Mall in Westminster on Saturday, October 3rd from noon to 6:00 p.m. to support my good friends at Special Olympics Maryland.

The event, called the “Slush ‘N Slide”, is an outdoor festival suitable for kids of all ages and it’s a great warm-up for the Polar Bear Plunge which will be here before we know it.

During the festival we will be making an attempt to set a record by building the world’s largest snowball (as in snow cone). Following our attempt, hearty souls – hereafter known as “Sliders” – will take a turn sliding down a 28-foot inflatable waterslide into our record-breaking creation.

BRRRRR!! The privilege of sliding is reserved for those that raise a minimum of $50 in pledges for Special Olympics. Yep, I’m there!!

In addition to the Slide there will be tons of great things to do. Carnival games, face painting, wing and watermelon eating contests – even a chance for one lucky slider to win a new Harley-Davidson motorcycle!

Live music will be provided by “The Reagan Years”, a regional 80’s band with a huge following. Great food will be available, as well as a beer garden for those adults in the crowd.

A variety of personalities will be on hand to include Mayor Kevin Utz (also a slider) and 98 Rock’s Theo, Stash and Sarah “The Queen” Fleischer. A $5 donation to Special Olympics is requested of all non-Sliders who wish to attend the festivities. More details about this incredible event are available on-line at http://www.slushnslide.com/.

Please consider joining me in supporting the incredible athletes of Special Olympics by becoming a Slider. You can register yourself or your team at http://www.slushnslide.com/.

If sliding into freezing water isn’t your thing (I sure wish it wasn’t mine), please consider supporting my slide by making a contribution on the Slush ‘N Slide website as follows:

· Once on the “http://www.slushnslide.com/” website, click on “Sponsor Slider”

· Type in my first and last name (Jeff Spaulding) and hit enter

· Select my name from the list provided

No contribution is too small and every dime is greatly appreciated. Your contribution is 100% tax-deductible and all of the money raised goes directly to the 10,000+ athletes of Special Olympic Maryland.

“Art in the Park 2008”

Art in the Park has been a Carroll County tradition for more than 25 years. This year’s events will be held, rain or shine, on Saturday, June 7 from 10 am – 5 pm on the grounds of Westminster City Hall. It is free to the public.

More than 75 artists will be participating in this juried art show with many of them also providing live demonstrations of their work. On display will be paintings, drawings, collage, photographs, fine prints, sculpture, and stained glass. Visitors will enjoy live demonstrations of wood carving, pottery wheel, screen painting, and cartoon illustration.

Entertainment will be provided by a dozen roaming musicians who will perform on dulcimer, banjo, flute, harp, accordion and voice to delight the crowds. A drum circle and a belly dance troupe will perform during the festivities. Actors from Theatre on the Hill’s upcoming production of Pump Boys and Dinettes will be there in costume to sing some of the musical numbers from that show. As always there will be free craft activities for kids to inspire artists of the future!

The event is located at the intersections of Locust, Longwell and Key Streets in downtown Westminster, just 2 blocks northeast of the intersection of Maryland Routes 32 and 27. Festival patrons are encouraged to park free in the parking garage adjacent to the park.

The event is sponsored by Target Stores, the Carroll County Times, Carroll County Recreation & Parks Department and the City of Westminster.

For additional information the Westminster Road Runners web site can be found at: http://www.carr.org/~wrrc/.

The annual Westminster Road Runners Club “Main Street Mile, a Carroll County rite of spring, will be held Wednesday evening, April 16, 2008 in Westminster.

The annual event dates back to 1981 and is known as “one of the fastest one-mile courses in the world” because it begins at the top of East Main Street at Fair Avenue and follows Main Street west to the Westminster Branch of the Carroll County Public Library - all downhill, with a total vertical drop of 144 feet.

Main Street will be closed to traffic for the event which attracts 700 runners and hundreds of cheering spectators and family members who come out in support.

The event always begins at 7 PM sharp, rain or shine and the race is run in two “heats.” Heat #1 is officially timed and scored with prizes awarded. To qualify for Heat #1, you must be age 11 or older and be capable of running a mile in less than 10 minutes.

Heat #2 is the “Connor Smith Memorial Fun Run.” It will neither be officially timed nor scored. A clock showing an unofficial race time, however, will be at the finish line.

Because so many young people participate, the Main Street Mile is known as a fun family event. Even the “race numbers” are fun, since everyone under the age of 10 wears a race identification badge, which bears the number “1.”

The cheers for the “number 1’s” always seem the heartiest, since finishing is quite an accomplishment for the little runners. Every “number 1” is awarded a medal at the finish line.

Every year over fifty volunteers, in addition to the Westminster Police Department and the Westminster Volunteer Fire Department and the Fire Police come together with members of the Westminster Road Runners Club and the Main Street Mile race director, to make sure it is a success.

Race directors in the past have included Liuda Galinaitis and one of the founders of the event, the late Dave Herlocker.

According to this year’s race director, Beth Weisenborn, registration for the 2008 Main Street Mile is now closed. The 700-runner limit has been met.

20070613 Model Ts visiting Westminster on June 19

June 14th, 2007

Westminster Eagle…

I’m looking forward to June 19th, 2007 when the Model Ts visit Westminster.

One of our spring projects has been to get the family’s 1929/1930 Model A out for a drive and get some maintenance accomplished.

As you can see from the picture above – I help my wife take care of work on the car

Anyway – writing for the Westminster Eagle last Wednesday, June 13th, 2007, Kym Byrnes says:

On June 19, the streets of Westminster will be filled with more than 60 Model T Fords as the antique cars, and their owners, journey down Main Street as part of a weeklong summer tour hosted by the Blue & Grey Chapter of the Model T Ford Club of America (MTFCA).

Vernon Keeler of Keymar is a member of the Blue and Grey Chapter, and expects to be on hand with his family's 1926 Model T Roadster pickup.

According to Keeler, the chapter is based in Hagerstown, but has members throughout the region, including his wife, Dottie Keeler, who is the current president.

For the summer tour, though, Model T owners come from as far as Colorado, Arizona, Maine and Florida, and spend the week, June 17-22, traveling to different locales in Maryland.

On Tuesday, June 19, members will travel to Westminster to visit the Wheeler Automotive Museum on Railroad Avenue, arriving at an estimated time of about 10:30 a.m.

[…]

Keeler, who said Model Ts move at about 35 miles per hour…

(Editor’s note: Which seems a bit slow but many folks are unaware that 35 mph was the national speed limit during World War II…)

The Third Annual Pennsylvania Avenue and Cigarettes and Tobacco Prevention Block Party on Sunday from 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in Westminster.

The event includes multi-cultural food dishes made by residents and educational activities for children provided by the Carroll County Health Department to inform children about the hazards of cigarette smoking, said Pennsylvania Avenue resident Josie Velazquez. Free art activities, a pet parade and a moon bounce will also be featured at the block party, she said.

The Westminster Fire Department will have equipment on display, she said, and the city police department will also be sponsoring an event. Voter registration will also be available, Velazquez said.

Pennsylvania Avenue will be closed to traffic between Union Street and James Way during the block party, she said.
