The first day of Baltimore Orioles’ spring training began Sunday when the pitchers and catchers reported for the annual ritual in Sarasota, Florida.

It’s a sure sign that – thankfully – spring weather is about to make its debut in Maryland.

Baseball has always been a favorite topic for many local history writers. And why not? Writing about baseball is fun. It has everything to warm the keyboard including summertime, arcane statistics, intrigue, colorful events, talent, family, and friends.

On Feb. 3, McDaniel College held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Kenneth R. Gill Stadium.

In an article by The Eagle's Steve Jones, at ExploreCarroll.com, he noted that at the ceremonies, "shovels dug into a pile of dirt at McDaniel College" to kick off the project.

Actually, that wasn't just any ol' "pile of dirt," but rather soil from a storied history — for both the college and Westminster.

The new $8 million, 1,434-seat Gill Stadium, which will replace the existing 900-seat Bair Stadium, will provide spectators a great view of the running track and athletic field.

That track has been known since June 10, 1922, as Hoffa Field.

Of course, growing up in Westminster in the 1950s, it was really known as "the football field on the Geiman farm." In the years before 1922, when the college was outside of Westminster city limits, the Geiman farm, and the then-Duvall Farm, were located between the campus and what we now know as Baugher's Restaurant.

Many Carroll County residents are getting a case of nostalgic Super Bowl fever as they look forward to Sunday's AFC championship contest between the Baltimore Ravens and the New England Patriots.

For more than 120 years — since football debuted at then-Western Maryland College on Oct. 31, 1891 — football has been a part of the history of Carroll County.

Not to be overlooked is the fact that since July 1949, Baltimore football teams have held summer practice in Westminster. Names like Raymond Berry, Jim Parker, Art Donovan, Gino Marchetti, Lenny Moore, Eugene (Big Daddy) Lipscomb, Alan Ameche, and Wilbur (Weeb) Ewbank, just to mention a few, have become an important part of our Carroll County cultural history.

And yes, there is also that quarterback that was cut by the Pittsburg Steelers in 1956.

What was his name? Oh yeah, right. Johnny Unitas.

Certainly many people were disappointed when the Baltimore Ravens announced Dec. 2 that the team will not be returning to its McDaniel College summer training camp.

In a Carroll Eagle article that day on ExploreCarroll.com, Westminster Mayor Utz spoke for many, "It's almost a 50-year tradition that's being broken… That's the sad part about it."

The tradition and history of Baltimore football and Westminster first began when the newspaper announced ran on Feb. 11, 1949, "College Campus To Be Used By Colts … Coach Isbell Expects to Bring 55 Players to Train, Starting in July … Baltimore's football Colts are going to train at Western Maryland College this year."

The article in the now defunct Democratic Advocate continued, "Dr. Lowell S. Ensor, president of the Methodist school, and Walter S. Driskill, Colts general manager, have signed a contract providing for the city's All-America Football Conference squad to use the Westminster College's campus as a pre-season base of operations, it was announced…"

The history of football in Baltimore — and Westminster — can trace one of its lineages to the All-America Football Conference in 1946 and another lineage to the NFL in 1944.

The first football team in Baltimore began on Dec. 28, 1946, when the bankrupt Miami Seahawks franchise, of the All-American Football Conference, was awarded to Baltimore.

Just over two-years later, according to the 1949 newspaper article, Coach Cecil Isbell said he expected to take a Colt squad to Westminster, "We plan to begin practice about five weeks before our opening contest..." How’s this for a random post.

If you have not visited the blogsite “Bad Jocks,” – “Where COPS meets SportsCenter,” you are missing an adventure into the shallow end of the gene pool.

Bad Jocks: http://www.badjocks.com/, should not be visited by those with a heart condition. Then again, if you are judicious as to what links you click on the site is okay for the faint at heart.

I heard the site mentioned on television in reference to the current media frenzy over hazing incidences. I don’t recall what station or program.

But back to the serious and sad on Bad Jock; the 64-dollar question is if folks are going to engage in behavior such as hazing, why do they post pictures on the Internet?

I’m looking at the post dated: “Who Did Something Stupid Today? - Updated May 19 2006.”

The site does not appear to use permalinks…

The section that caught my eye was: “It's Here! BadJocks ‘End-of-the-School-Year Initiation Picture Blowout Bonanza’”

Unfortunately, the Christian-based college I attended from 1971 – 1973, Elon College – now Elon University, made the “Dirty Dozen.”

BadJocks "End-of-the-School-Year Initiation Picture Blowout Bonanza"- You've waited patiently since Monday for our "Dirty Dozen," (initiation pictures from twelve colleges across the USA) that we've found online over the past few weeks. We wish we could say this is all there is out there, but that's not EVEN CLOSE to the truth. Given enough time and money we could probably post 100 sets like these, maybe more.

Why? Well, first off, it's time to reveal the source for these, and all of our other initiation pictures: Webshots.com.

Did you know that if you put in the term "initiation" into their search tool, you'll get more than 135,000 images. 135,000!!!

Granted, not all of those are sports (most are those damn A/V geeks), so try just "soccer initiation."

The result: almost 2800! "Lacrosse initiation or lax initiation?" More than 2200 combined.

And the list goes on and on for every sport you can imagine. Some are just one picture of some guy with his head shaved like a monk, wearing nothing but women's panties with a half-empty 40 ouncer duct taped to his hand . . . others are entire sets that document a whole evening of fun.

Can Hazing Be Prevented?

We may never eradicate hazing, however, we can reduce the amount and intensity of hazings. To do this many programs need to be developed. I have proposed, along with Karen Savoy, of MASH (Mothers Against School Hazing) a NATIONAL HAZING PREVENTION ACT which would provide money to fund:
1. an agency to define, monitor, and investigate hazing
2. several university-based research programs that would create curriculum to train coaches and other leaders of groups, and that would be used with students from age 13-adulthood
3. create a federal law that would deter hazing
