Fourteen years ago — on April 12, 1998 — the Baltimore Sun carried an article about my neighbor and good friend, Kathryn Myers Frock, in which it was noted:

"The Westminster woman, who is believed to be the longest-serving 4-H volunteer in the country, was surprised recently to be honored for 58 years of volunteer service.

"Fifty-eight years? thought Frock. Why 58?

"'Maybe they don't think I'm going to be here for 60 years,' she said with a smile."

Well, Frock made it to 60 years. As a matter of fact, make that 74 years that she was a 4-H leader and volunteer fair judge.

That said, with Frock, it was not as much about the quantity of years, but the quality.

When Kathryn Frock joined 4-H in 1934, there were girl 4-H clubs and boy 4-H clubs. If you lived on a farm and worked with animals, however, you were allowed to belong to a "co-ed club."

In those days the fair was held in Taneytown, before moving to its current location behind the Agricultural Center in Westminster.

To build the buildings at the new site, the 4-H clubs raised money through various methods such as making moccasins and selling household "guidebooks."

The Westminster woman who is believed to be the longest-serving 4-H volunteer in the country was surprised recently to be honored for 58 years of volunteer service.

Fifty-eight years? thought Kathryn Frock. Why 58?

"Maybe they don't think I'm going to be here for 60 years," she said with a smile last week.

If there were a grandmaster of homemaking, Frock, 80, would qualify: Her skills range from the "seven-day pickles" she puts up to the carefully centered daisy buttons on a dress she made in 1936 that swept 4-H Club local, state and national needlework honors.

William “Bill” Joseph Laslo, age 65, of Finksburg, died Wednesday February 9, 2011 at University of Maryland Medical Center.

He was born April 24, 1945 in Martins Ferry, Ohio the son of Sue Maddy Percosky of Windber, PA and the late Constant Percosky.

He was the husband of Charlotte Quimby Laslo.

He was a veteran of the Army Reserve. William was a member of Ascension Episcopal Church. He worked as a computer systems analyst for the National Security Agency (NSA) at Ft. Meade, MD and retired after 42 years. He loved his work and went to Germany for 5 years where he was able to work and support the Department of Defense. He enjoyed fixing people’s computers and everything else.

William liked taking care of his bird, “Flippy” a cockatiel. Above all, he liked spending time with his family. In addition to his wife he is survived by children, Joseph Donald Laslo of Finksburg, Mara Linda Laslo of Baltimore and Gregory Thomas Laslo of Finksburg; siblings, Sharon Rench of Ohio, Constant Percosky of Bellevue, Nebraska, Kathy Holsinger of Johnstown, PA and Gregory Percosky of Johnstown, PA.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, February 15, 2011, 11:00 A.M. at Ascension Episcopal Church, 23 North Court Street, Westminster with Father Ron Fisher officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ascension Episcopal Church, designated for the Soup Kitchen.

Sirinakis, George D. passed away last Wednesday.  Pritts Funeral Home published the following obituary on its website, http://www.prittsfuneralhome.com/:

George Dimitrios Sirinakis, 81, of Westminster, died Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at home.

Born on October 4, 1929 in Skyros, Greece, he was the son of the late Dimitrios George and Kyparissia Efthasiou Sirinakis. He was married for 52 years to Zoe A. Sirinakis.

Mr. Sirinakis arrived at the port of Baltimore as a Greek Merchant Marine in October 1957. At that time he was introduced to his wife by a cousin living in Baltimore. After finishing his tour of duty he returned in May 1958 and was married in June of that same year.

In 1959, he and his wife bought Harry’s Lunch from her parents, Aristidis “Harry” and Vasiliki Amprazis.

In July 1976 they moved the restaurant to its present location on Main Street, Westminster.

They retired in 1987 and sold the business to their son Harry in 1990; today it is known as Harry’s Main Street Grille. Mr. and Mrs. Sirinakis were also the owners of Harry’s Sub Shop from 1976-2010.

With only an elementary school education, he learned English while settling in Westminster, Mr. Sirinakis became a pillar in the local business community. He was a past member of The American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA); a member of the Elks Lodge #2277 and the Moose Lodge.

He belonged to Saints Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church in Frederick, the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation in Baltimore and St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Ocean City, MD.

Mr. Sirinakis enjoyed traveling, especially to Skyros, the island in Greece where he grew up. He enjoyed many vacations with his family at their home in Ocean City. He also enjoyed gardening. His deepest passion, however, was always his family.

Surviving him besides his wife Zoe are sons and daughter-in-laws James G. and Dawn Sirinakis of Crownsville; A. Harry and Rebecca Sirinakis of Westminster; a daughter Kyparissia Sirinakis of Bethesda; grandchildren Andrew Essman, and Alexandra, Aristidis, Nicholas and Michael Sirinakis; and a brother Dimitrios G. Sirinakis of Sykesville.

He was predeceased by a sister, Efrosini Sarris.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, from 5-7 PM and Sunday from 1-4 PM at Pritts Funeral Home and Chapel, 412 Washington Road, Westminster.

Services will be held on Monday, November 8th at the funeral home chapel with Father Anastasios Kousoulas officiating. Eulogy begins at 12:30 PM, a Greek Orthodox funeral service at 1 PM and interment will be in Westminster Cemetery immediately following the service.

Memorial contributions can be made to Carroll Hospice, 292 Stoner Avenue, Westminster, Maryland 21157; Saints Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church, 920 West 7th St. Frederick, Maryland 21701; or National Stroke Association,www.stroke.org.

Dr. Douglas Chilcoat, 71, a longtime veterinarian in the Westminster area, died unexpectedly June 17, 2010, at his home in Talkeetna, Alaska.

Chilcoat began practicing veterinary medicine in the early 1970s in Westminster. For more than 30 years, he maintained a practice at the Westminster Veterinary Hospital at the intersection of New Windsor Road and West Main Street.

Chilcoat was one the first area vets to maintain a 24-hour emergency animal care service. A Baltimore Sun article from May 31, 1994, noted, “Starting tomorrow, pet owners won't have to worry about waking their regular veterinarian to rush to the office when an animal companion becomes seriously ill or is injured during the night….

Several years ago, Chilcoat relocated and started a new veterinary practice in Talkeetna, a small town of about 778 residents in the Upper Susitna Valley, where the Susitna, Chulitna and Talkeetna Rivers come together, two-and-half hours north of Anchorage, Alaska. Mt. McKinley is nearby and the area is well known for salmon fishing and spectacular scenery.

“Cicely,” the fictional town from the television series “Northern Exposure” was “based on Talkeetna, a town on the rail line between Anchorage and Denali National Park, with plenty of its own quirks…,” according to a Sept. 30, 2007, article in the San Francisco Chronicle.

News of his death spread through the Carroll County community earlier in the week primarily by word of mouth. An article published by KTNA, a community radio station in Talkeetna, on June 17, included, “Dr Chilcoat was a practicing veterinarian in Talkeetna, and also served as a volunteer veterinarian in the Iditarod Trail sled dog race. He was well known by dog and other pet owners in the Upper Susitna Valley.”

Funeral Service for Laurell Taylor to be held Saturday, October 24, 2009 at 1 pm

A funeral Mass for Westminster City Clerk and former county attorney for Carroll County Laurell Elizabeth Taylor, 58, of Westminster will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. John Catholic Church, 43 Monroe St., Westminster.

She died Thursday, Oct. 8, 2009, at Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster of natural causes. According to a published obituary: Taylor was born Aug. 23, 1951, in southern California. She was the daughter of Valerie Trousdale Brown, of Washington, and the late Jack Reynolds Brown; and stepdaughter of Richard Mailander, of Washington.

She was a graduate of Towson University and the University of Baltimore School of Law, where she graduated with honors.

She was admitted to practice law in Maryland in 1985. Before her work with Carroll County and Westminster, she served as an appellate judicial law clerk with Alan Wilner, then on the Court of Special Appeals.

Surviving, in addition to her mother, are children James "JR" Taylor, of College Park, and Miles Taylor, of Westminster; niece and nephew Laura and Alex Brown, both of Washington; and a brother, Lance Brown, of New York City.

Danny is the older brother of Westminster High School class of 1971 classmate Dave Selby.

I have fond memories of Danny, especially how he enjoyed cutting up catalogs and magazines. It is a behavior that I copy to this day…

Daniel L. Selby, 58, of Westminster, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, at Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster.

Born June 13, 1950, in Gettysburg, Pa., he was the son of Sterling and Geneva Ohler Selby of Summerville in Westminster.

He attended Change Inc. and The Arc of Carroll County.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are brothers David Selby, of Silver Spring, and Dennis Selby, of Houston.

A private graveside service will be held at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Cemetery in Taneytown.

As we prepare for this year’s Westminster Road Runners Club Main Street Mile, word spread quickly through the community that one of the patriarchs of the annual event - and the Westminster Road Runners Club, Dr. David Herlocker passed away last Friday, March 21, 2008.

This year’s race will run on Wednesday, April 16^th, 2008 and the race will hardly be the same without him.

Dave Herlocker was a well-respected scientist, McDaniel College professor, runner, community leader, fellow member of Grace Lutheran Church and a good friend… and his passing leaves us sad beyond words.

Please join us as we keep Dave’s many friends and family in our hearts and prayers…

David Webb Herlocker, 67, of Westminster, died unexpectedly but peacefully at his home on Friday, March 21, 2008.

Born October 30, 1940 in Chicago, Illinois, he is the son of Donald Herlocker and the late Betty Comfort Herlocker. He was raised in Peoria, Illinois.

He was a 1962 graduate of Knox College and graduated from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in 1966 with a doctorate in inorganic chemistry.

In 1966, he began a long career teaching chemistry at Western Maryland College, now McDaniel College. He served as the Chemistry Department chair department chair for many years. He retired in 2006 and was named an emeritus faculty member. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the American Chemical Society, and other professional organizations.

He began running in the mid 1970s and was a member of the Westminster and York Road Runner Clubs. He was an organizer of many road races in and around Westminster, including the Main Street Mile. After an accident in 1995 left him unable to run, he continued to walk daily with friends. He was a recognizable figure at many races with his loyal canine companion, Badie.

He was a long-time member of Grace Lutheran Church and served on the church council and scholarship committee. He was active in Ardent Folk, a ministry providing meals to those in need.

He was a member of the parent organizing committee which founded the Westminster Montessori School in 1974. He helped to develop and implement the school’s chemistry curriculum. Since his retirement he has volunteered weekly in their science classes.

An avid sports fan, he followed the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, and the McDaniel women’s basketball and volleyball teams. He was a 27-year member of a book club and a lover of history and trivia.

Remembering him are children and partners Caryn Herlocker Meade and Adam Meade of Raleigh, NC and Daniel Herlocker and Ellen Keelan of Brattleboro, VT; father Donald Herlocker of Canton, IL; brother and sister-in-law William and Hilda Herlocker of Kildeer, IL; sister and brother-in-law Linda and Peter Speck of Wanganui New Zealand; grandchildren Evan and Georgia Meade; former wife and friend Helen Herlocker; and numerous friends.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 25 at Grace Lutheran Church, 21 Carroll St, Westminster with his pastors Rev. Kevin and Martha Clementson officiating.

Inurnment of ashes will be in Grace Lutheran Church Columbarium.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Grace Lutheran Church in support of the Ardent Folk social ministry.

Many of us in the community were taken aback to open the Carroll County Times Friday morning and read that Peggy Villella had passed away.

Over the years as an appointed and then an elected official I had gotten to know Peggy as the ever-cheerful and vivacious receptionist for the Carroll County Times office on Railroad Avenue in Westminster.

When I moved to the other side of the computer and began writing columns for “The Advocate,” a weekly publication of the Carroll County Times, every time I visited the office, she would, no matter how hectic the day, act as if I were the only person in the world she needed to greet and help that day.

In a Carroll County Times article which was published in the paper today, (Face of the Times remembered for her warmth,) Karen Karaszkiewicz wrote what many of us felt, that she was the “face” of the Carroll County Times. In many ways a model for what corporations and government agencies need on the front desk – such as, for example, Kay Church, the receptionist for Carroll County government in the Carroll County office building on Center Street in Westminster. Ms. Karaszkiewicz wrote

“A woman who was known by many as the face of the Carroll County Times will be remembered by friends, family, coworkers, and neighbors for her charisma and upbeat attitude.”

“For about the past 10 years, she had worked at the front desk, spreading her cheerfulness to everyone who walked into the building, whether they were customers or coworkers, according to Lori Blake, director of administration.”

Over the years in which I got to know her, she never ever had a bad thing to say about anyone. And as Ms. Karaszkiewicz wrote, “For about the past 10 years, she had worked at the front desk, spreading her cheerfulness to everyone who walked into the building, whether they were customers or coworkers, according to Lori Blake, director of administration.”

Upon hearing the news, Carroll County commissioner Dean Minnich spoke of having gotten to know her over his past years as newspaperman and remarked that she was always so upbeat, positive and always greeted you with a big smile. “There is so much bitterness in the world and it is such a shame to lose such a sweet person.”

Carroll County Times city editor Jamie Kelly spoke for many when he said, “It’s been a shock. She was just a wonderful lady. She loved people and it showed. It will be hard to adjust to the Times without her...”

There are many such folks in Carroll County and it is people like Peggy Villella that make our community a wonderful place to live. She will be greatly missed.

Margaret K. 'Peggy' Villella, 62, of Westminster

Margaret Kay "Peggy" Villella, 62, of Westminster died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2007, at her home.

Born July 10, 1945, in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of the late James E. and Charlotte Houk Freeman. She was the wife of Frank Xavier Villella Sr., her husband of 39 years.

She was a graduate of Patterson High School. She had been a receptionist and cashier for the Carroll County Times since 1992.

She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Carroll Post 31 American Legion and of the VFW Post 467, both in Westminster.

She enjoyed going on ocean cruises, weekend getaways and trips to the mountains. She liked eating crabs and collecting dolls. She also enjoyed watching scary movies and science fiction movies; her favorite was the original version of "The Thing."

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are sons Patrick and Frank X. Villella Jr., both of Westminster; a brother, James E. Freeman of Lighthouse Point, Fla.; a devoted friend, Rita Shea Schiff of Baltimore; and eight nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. John Roman Catholic Church, 43 Monroe St., Westminster, with Monsignor Arthur Valenzano officiating. Interment will be private.

The family will receive friends from noon to 3 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Pritts Funeral Home & Chapel, 412 Washington Road, Westminster.
