Readers had been saying recently that they have been unable to easily find my content on the Westminster Patch web site http://patch.com/maryland/westminster or http://patch.com/maryland/westminster/kevin-e-dayhoffs-blog in recent months. I could not find it either. I had to do a search on “Dayhoff Patch” to find it…. Here are the results…

May 28, 1997 Giant Lava Lamp discovered on Kevin Dayhoff’s farm

May 28, 1997 Giant Lava Lamp discovered on Kevin Dayhoff’s farm

Kevin E. Dayhoff    Buzzard’s Crust Farm
Press Release - For immediate Publication May 28, 1997

Excavations on Kevin Dayhoff’s farm in Patapsco confirm the early development of a Giant Lava Lamp.

Recently, while tilling his wife Caroline’s vegetable garden, Mr. Kevin Dayhoff discovered traces of a Giant Lava Lamp on his farm in Patapsco, Maryland.  Mr. Dayhoff was quite excited at this discovery, and called the Patapsco Daily Herald Bugle immediately with the news.

According to Mr. Dayhoff, in ancient Patapsco folklore, a Giant Lava Lamp was once the focal point of an ancient Patapscoian religion, which has persistently been rumored to still be secretly practiced in the hills of Patapsco.

In this ancient religion, every residence maintained an altar, centered on a gazing ball, many of which can still be found in the area.  This gazing ball altar was used to communicate with the spirit of the Great Lava Lamp Father who resided in the Temple of the Great Lava Lamp.

Pink Flamingoes, which are indigenous to the Patapsco area, were considered to be the messenger bird of the Great Lava Lamp Father.  Pink Flamingoes are now on the endangered species list and, where their nests of inverted tractor tires are found, by law they cannot be disturbed.

It is hoped that further excavations will provide insight into the culture of the Carthaginians who settled Patapsco after the Third Punic War in 206 BC.  The archeologists are curious if the Great Lava Lamp religion is something that the Carthaginians brought over with them or if it was a religion of the Petapsqui tribe of Native Americans known to have inhabited the Patapsco area, or perhaps a mixture of both.  As further research develops we will keep you informed.

First impressions of the new DalĂ Museum in St Petersburg

The new DalĂ Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida has now been open for over two-years. The much-anticipated fantastical $36 million, 66,450 square foot museum doubled the capacity of the previous 1982 building that I had the opportunity to visit in February 2009.

The original museum had opened in a renovated marine warehouse March 7, 1982. According to a number of media accounts, the new museum – which is the home of 2,140 pieces of Salvador Dali’s art, including 96 oil paintings and eight huge master works - opened on the auspicious date of January 11, 2011 (1/11/11) at 11:11 a.m.

The museum in downtown St. Petersburg houses one of the most extensive collections of the art of Salvador Dali in the world. It began in Cleveland, OH, in 1942 where collecting Dali’s art was the lifelong passion of industrialist A. Reynolds Morse, and his wife Eleanor Reese Morse.

[...]

As you approach the HOK-designed museum, you are immediately impressed with the enormity of what appears at first glance to be a huge introverted enigmatic cubist-snail on steroids. The internationally recognized architect Yann Weymouth led the design team.

The museum structure is a magnificent adaption to a site with many design constraints, including but not limited to the fact that it houses one of the foremost collections of art in the world in a hurricane zone, just feet above sea level with a profound flood hazard…

[…]

According to information on the Dali Museum website, “The museum’s exterior is itself a work of art, featuring 1062 triangular-shaped glass panels. This geodesic glass structure – nicknamed the “Enigma” – is the only structure of its kind in North America and is a 21st century expression of Buckminster Fuller’s geodesic dome as utilized in DalĂ’s Teatro Museo in Figueres, Spain. No two glass panels are identical, providing a kaleidoscopic view of St. Petersburg’s picturesque waterfront.

The new Dali Museum in St. Petersburg Florida

Alas, sadly my winter schedules in the last number of years have not included a visit to the Dali Museum, Tampa, and St. Petersburg or the opportunity to seeing the local sights such as the Sunshine Skyway – completed in 1987, it spans the mouth of Tampa Bay and is the world's longest cable-stayed concrete bridge.

This year I was able to juggle my schedule to see what the buzz is all about at what many are calling one of the world’s top-ten art destinations.

As you approach the HOK-designed museum, you are immediately impressed with the enormity of what appears at first glance to be a huge introverted enigmatic cubist-snail on steroids. The internationally recognized architect Yann Weymouth led the design team.
