Peter Plant is the gallery guest at Off Track Art for November and December.  Peter is a studio and plein air artist who has worked in a traditional style of painting in acrylics.  Over the past two years however, he has branched out and experimented with a variety of mixed media techniques which have broadened his experience in both studio and plein air work.  His studio work has included wet-in-wet acrylics on watercolor paper, images drawn with markers, as well as poured and splattered paint backgrounds.  Plant’s goal is to explore media and techniques that enhance the creative experience while presenting realistic images to the viewer.  Pearlescent inks, Sharpie markers, watercolor pencils, and colored pencils have all found their way into his art.

The well-received Off Track Art Co-op artists’ exhibition, featured at Birdie’s CafĂ© in Westminster, continues through Feb. 27.
The show, “Lucky 13,” opened Jan. 7 with a bang and plenty of new artworks by some of Carroll’s favorite and most well-known artists. Birdie’s CafĂ© opened last year in the old Pour House space at 233 E. Main St.
The featured artists include Kevin Dayhoff, Mary E. Decker, Gail Elwell, Judy Goodyear, Phil Grout, Charlotte Laslo, C.Z. Sawdey, Carolyn Seabolt, Linda Van Hart, Robert J. Waddell, Gordon Wickes, and Pam Zappardino.
The coffeehouse, run by local artist Sherri Hosfeld Joseph, of Westminster, has been holding art shows bi-monthly to promote local and regional artists. The artists from Off Track Art, known as “the Co-op,” are showing new works in addition to their ongoing, changing shows at 11 Liberty St., next to the railroad tracks and across from O’Lordans Irish Pub in Westminster.
Former Mayor Kevin Dayhoff, artist and writer, is showing new collage works and a wooden sculpture never shown before. Dayhoff has been a collage master for more than 30 years and just keeps getting better.
Dayhoff is exhibiting three pieces. Dayhoff said he “explores colors and shapes and various social themes through collage, mixed media assemblage, drawings, and photography.
“I like the patriotic theme of ‘The Union Bridge College Bell and Flag,’ photograph as well as the history and tradition of the image…” he explained.
According to Dayhoff, he is also particularly fond of “Insaniacs,” a digitally enhanced photograph. He likes the juxtaposition of the Bo Diddley quote about how insane society can be - on top of the tranquility depicted in a scene from his farm in Patapsco.
The most interesting piece in the show by Dayhoff is “Nosakhere,” a religious wooden sculpture from his African mask series. This piece, which is nearly 3 feet tall, is a commanding face and has an organic feel. The name is an African one that means “One with God.”
“So much of art is about beauty and harmony and juxtaposing the various themes that make us human. All of those gifts come from my sense of faith…”  http://www.carrollcountytimes.com/advocate_of_westminster/columns/eye_for_art/local-artists-featured-at-birdie-s-cafe/article_706b5dd2-3910-11e0-a5e3-001cc4c002e0.html

Off Track gets on track with local artists By Missie Wilcox

Off Track gets on track with local artists By Missie Wilcox

Between winter's gray skies and dark news headlines, the world can seem pretty bleak these days.

However, a trip to Westminster reveals a veritable rainbow emerging in a small building just beyond the train tracks that criss-cross downtown.

Westminster, allow me to introduce you to Off Track Art and a world of color, texture and style.

The gallery is a cooperative of 20 immensely talented local artists who have joined together to bring an amazing array of mixed media and artwork to downtown.

The gallery is located at 11 Liberty St., at the corner of Main Street and Route 27.

As you might guess from its name, the gallery is just beside the train tracks. However, the name also describes the artists being a bit "off center" and eclectic.

The result of these varied styles and talents is a diverse display. From photography and collage to pottery and jewelry, the gallery has it. All work is handcrafted, beautifully finished and proudly displayed.

The gallery opened this past Friday the 13th, but the artists believe the superstitious date has brought them only the good kind of luck. It will be open six days a week, with a cooperative artist member being present at all times the gallery is open.

As a result, shoppers are guaranteed an interaction with an artist whose work is showcased.

"There is something really satisfying about knowing the person that made the object you just purchased," said Gail Elwell, one of the founding artists.

"If visitors stop by every time they come to Westminster, it's conceivable that they could meet a different artist each visit and be treated to a personal tour of that person's artwork," added Melinda Byrd, another local artist whose work is featured in the inaugural display.

The idea for an artist cooperative has been on the minds of several members for years, and the location and right mix of artists combine for a great time to launch the gallery.

"Several of us have wanted to open a gallery for some time," said Pam Zappardino, who serves as an adjunct lecturer in art at McDaniel College and Carroll Community College.

The artwork offered is as varied as the artists who have created it.
All work is original, and most artists are creating works that are exclusive to the gallery.

"The artwork will be that which no one has ever seen from me before," said Byrd.

The objective of the co-op is to sponsor the artwork of its members, and to provide support for the local arts community in Westminster.

"Downtown is a great place, and has the potential to be an even more wonderful destination with the arts as a centerpiece," said Zappardino. "I really hope that Off Track Art can play a part in making downtown Westminster a true arts and entertainment district."

The gallery is also an opportunity for art enthusiasts to "buy local."

"With our current nationwide economic meltdown, we believe there's nothing more important than community support for those who make and do in our neighborhoods," Elwell said.

Editor's Note: Due to an editing error, the print version of this story in the Westminster Eagle of Feb. 18 incorrectly referred to Pam Zappardino's role with Carroll Community College. It is corrected here. The Eagle regrets the error.

Carroll County's art scene recently revealed a bright spot in a bleak winter landscape with the opening of Off Track Art Gallery in downtown Westminster.

The gallery is a cooperative of 20 local artists, and is located at 11 Liberty St., at the corner of Main Street and Route 27. It's open six days a week: Monday through Wednesday, noon to 6 p.m., Thursday and Friday noon to 7 p.m., and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

By Brandon Oland, Times Staff Writer Friday, February 13, 2009

[…]

It’s been a busy week for 20 area artists who have been putting the finishing touches on Off Track Art, a cooperative located just off the railroad tracks in downtown Westminster that is having its grand opening from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today.

The gallery will be filled from floor to ceiling with sculptures, jewelry, photography, paintings and more.

Westminster painter Sarah Abel Deluca said artists are, generally, independent thinkers and creators.

But the co-op’s artists have come together for this project, splitting the rent and agreeing to staff the co-op located inside Roger Lewis’ Carousel Stained Glass at 11 Liberty Street.

“It’s been exciting to watch the group come together,” Maurio said. “Everyone is bringing their own strengths.”

The artists began meeting in December over breakfast to discuss plans.

Each of the co-op members gets their own space in one of the two rooms in the gallery.

The artists drew numbers out of a hat to decide where each would display their works.

Artists dropped by this week to start installing their works, stopping to admire and compliment the projects of their peers.
