Dinner at Harry’s Main Street Grille in Westminster Maryland

Dinner at Harry’s Main Street Grille in Westminster Maryland

My family had dinner at Harry’s this evening (last Saturday, May 28, 2011.)  In addition to the delicious traditional food we have come to love and enjoy, the venerable Main Street Westminster restaurant has added some great new items on, literally, a new menu.  I had the new veggie sandwich, which was delightful.  And we got to visit with a number of friends and neighbors.

Check Harry’s out next time you anywhere near Westminster.  The servers are fun and friendly – and from the local community.  It is locally owned; and for three generations, the Sirinakis family has supported the community – especially art and cultural events.

The prices are quite reasonable and all the money you spend at Harry’s stays in Carroll County; supports local workers, and the local community.

Founded in 1946, Harry's Main Street Grille has become a dining landmark in downtown Westminster. Now in its third generation of ownership by the Sirinakis family, Harry's offers a great selection of American cuisine including burgers, paninis, wraps and pastas.

Their famous hot dogs are served Coney Island style with chili, mustard and onions, but definitely not sauerkraut!

Customers who absolutely must insist on having sauerkraut on their hot dogs will have to pay $85 for it in accordance with Harry's longstanding policy... More: http://westminster.patch.com/listings/harrys-main-street-grille

Photographs of Kelly Heck on display in Westminster

Local Westminster Maryland artist Kelly Heck to feature her photographic series “Beautiful Silence,” at an exhibition at Off Track Art in Westminster

Kevin Dayhoff

May 5, 2011

http://kbetrue.livejournal.com/384558.html

“Beautiful Silence,” a photo-essay by local Westminster award-winning artist, photographer, and web designer Kelly Heck, is the subject of an exhibition at Off Track Art in historic downtown Westminster during the months of May and June.

According to Heck, the photographic series “is about experiencing true peace, illustrated through landscapes taken in and around the Carroll County, Maryland area.”

Heck’s carefully structured photographs in the exhibition belie a strong classical foundation in the artistic fundamentals of the marriage of art and photography

Featuring stark contrasts found in winter the snow-covered landscape scenes and natural still-lifes are certainly wordless, but anything but silent.  The images of snow and winter paradoxically and softly tell a warm story in their own voices, without words, using their quiet, soft – inside voices – if you will...

In one photograph, a snow-covered field is bisected by a fence line that features the winter-lined silhouette of a tree.  The tree almost appears animated as it speaks, on behalf of the fence, to the audience of the crop field in the foreground.

Heck, according to her website, http://www.kellyheckphotography.com/, “is most passionate about creative portraiture and shooting on location.  Her goal is to create scenes that are unnatural by intensifying vibrant colors and textures from the environment and her subjects…”

Heck has received a number of awards for her art and photography.  In 2007, Heck’s “Bird Series” won second place in the PDNedu Competition and was published in PDNedu Magazine.  It also won third place in the 62nd CPOY, College Photographer Of The Year, and was published on the cover of SCAD's annual Silver & Ink publication.

In an explanation of “Beautiful Silence,” Heck explains on her website, “If you haven’t tried it yet, venture outside during the next snowfall.  Wait until a few inches have settled on the ground.  You will have to remove yourself from noise.  Escape from civilization; voices, home, business, traffic, machinery, phones, music any human sound.

“Surround yourself with nature.  Find a spot with the snow falling around you. A wooded area is especially perfect, removing you from harsh, cool winds that whistle by your ears.  Stand motionless and breathe deeply.  Quietly.  Allow the tranquility to fill you up.  Close your eyes, if you wish, and enjoy being removed from it all.

“Slowly and surely, you will find that even though you have escaped the sound of humanity, it is not silent.  Everyone is at home, safe and warm from the dangers of icy roads.

“Even the wildlife has somewhat settled.  All you hear is the gentle clicking of snow falling to the ground. It is an elegant, comforting noise, a retreat from days filled with commotion.  Breathe softly. This beautiful silence can so easily soothe your mind into a meditative state of utter relaxation.

“In this moment, you can forget your worries and focus only on your center of gravity.  This is true peace, and the most genuine I have ever found.”

Heck earned her BFA in photography as a result of her studies at the Savannah College of Art & Design, in Savannah, Georgia.  Her interest in fine art grew into a concentration of photography at an early age, and she has practiced it as a career ever since.

She currently applies her artistic training and has put her education to work at InfoPathways.com, in the former Maryland Unemployment Insurance Office at the corner of Green and Liberty Street, in Westminster.

This is certainly convenient for Heck for showing at Off Track Art, a local artist cooperative which is located in the same block, at the side entrance of 11 Liberty Street, right beside the railroad tracks off the Sentinel parking lot.

An opening night reception for Heck and her work will be held this Friday May 6th, 2011, from 5:30-7:30 p.m at 11 Liberty Street, in Westminster.  Click here for directions.

The show will remain on exhibition through June 25th.  Off Track Art is open Wednesday through Friday 12:00-6:00 p.m. and Saturday 10:00-5:00 p.m.  For more information call 443 340 6317.

Other exhibiting artists at Off Track Art include Mary Decker, Kevin Dayhoff, Gail Elwell, Linda Van Hart, Judy Goodyear, Charlotte Laslo, Cathy Sawdey, Gordon Wickes, Robert Waddell, Pamela Zappardino, Phil Grout, and Carolyn Seabolt.  Off Track Art may be found online at http://www.offtrackart.org/.

The writer, Kevin Dayhoff, along with photojournalist Phil Grout, also exhibit their work at Off Track Art and work for the Carroll Eagle www.explorecarroll.com and Patuxent Publishing Company.

Melinda Byrd: Byrdcall Studio Summer Update

Melinda Byrd: Byrdcall Studio Summer Update
Greetings Friends, Fans, and Art Lovers,
Wow! Summer has definitely arrived, but I don't mind. I am already on the summer routine of playing with paints in the studio with a healthy mix of walking the dog and weeding the garden. I hope you are enjoying each day as it comes, too.
I want to tell you about four things in this email update. (Remember, if you ever don't wish to be on this email list any longer, simply email me back asking to be removed...I respect that.) Please forgive me if you receive more than one of these...I need an administrative assistant to keep me straight.
1. My Art Show Schedule for 2010 (pending acceptance to each)
Since I met most of you at art and music festivals and shows, you may want to make note of the following dates and locations where I hope to be displaying my work. Please contact me before any show to confirm I'll be there or to request that I bring your favorite "whatever" for you.
Saturday, June 5, Art in the Park, Westminster City Park 10 AM - 4 PM
I've been at this show every year for the past 11 years--rain or shine. GREAT SHOW! I'm displaying all my hand-printed shirts as well as many woodcut and linocut prints, and oil paintings, too. Please come by my booth. This year the show is bigger than ever. All artists will love to see a good turn out, so come if you can. And it's Free!
Saturday, June 12, Gunpowder River Art Festival, Monkton, MD 11 AM - 8 PM
Keep cool by the River. The event will be held on the Gunpowder River in historic Monkton, Maryland. This event, sponsored by the Northern Baltimore County Art Foundation. A great venue and a first time event. Check it out.
Saturday, August 21, Hot August Blues, Oregon Ridge Park, Cockeysville, MD
(Note: featured artists include Keb' Mo', Lyle Lovett, Black Joe Lewis and more!)
This is a big outdoor concert lasting from noon til dark. Read the web site for details. Best prices for tickets if you buy early online. I've been going for about 7 years and the weather has always been good--but HOT. Wear a hat. Come say hi to me and buy a shirt!
Fri. and Sat. Nov. (26 and) 27 BazaArt at the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore
This is Thanksgiving weekend ... I'll send you another update by then. This show is Fun, Fun, FUN!
December 4, Holiday Mart, Glenwood, MD (formerly in Columbia)
If you only go to one Holiday Art and Craft show, this might as well be it...It's huge, it's juried...Get all your shopping done in one venue. More details to come, just mark your calendar.
2. Become a Fan of Byrdcall Studio on Facebook
I am just starting a "page" on Facebook called Byrdcall Studio. I'm posting photos of the art work I am working on or just finishing just for the fun of showing off. I'm not really sure how all this Facebook stuff works, but I think if you click on the link below, you'll go to that site. You can click on "like" or "add to my page's favorites" and hopefully you'll get an occasional (weekly?) update on what going on in the studio...like classes, projects, weird things I'm working on, and some very nice things I'm working on. Try it. Leave comments so I know you are there. Let me know if it doesn't work. ;-)
3. New Endeavors on the Horizon
One of my goals for this summer is to work more closely with the galleries and shops who represent my work, and to be more timely in creating commissioned work for customers. One difficult decision I made is to leave the partnership at Off Track Art in downtown Westminster at the end of June. I am sorry to not be part of the only Artists' Coop in town. It is growing and changing every month. Let's all keep in touch with OTA as they host bi-monthly guest artist receptions and feature completely new work every six months.
Because you are receiving this email, I know that we can stay in touch. You know where to find me...by email, by phone, though my web site, make an appointment to come by the studio anytime convenient to us both (which will be LOTS of time!), and now you know how to find me at shows in the coming months.
My work is also represented at the following venues. Check out these businesses and "Support a Starving Artist."
Art Partners in Clarksville, MD http://artpartnersgallery.com/lets-frame-it.htm
ArtWorks and Apparel Boutique on Main St. in Westminster http://www.facebook.com/pages/Westminster-MD/Artworks-Apparel-Boutique/135956256383
The Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center in Frederick ... http://www.delaplaine.org/Programs/GiftGallery.aspx
The Howard Conservancy in Woodstock, MD http://www.hcconservancy.org/
Magnolia House in northern Westminster off 97

4. In case you missed this last time, check out this 6-min. video of me creating a Woodcut print from start to finish! It's on YouTube now.
This was fun! Every other day for over a week, photo-journalist Ken Koons came to my studio to document how I create a woodcut from inspirational sketch to design, carving, and printing. This will show you what goes into the prints that many of you proudly wear on your shirts as well as have framed for hanging on your walls. Click on this link, and then click on the top button that says "May the Wind..." Let me know what you think of it! I'm printing lots of shirts with this design...want one?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2hguBvmZb4
Thanks for reading all the way to the end. Hope you enjoyed the update.

Many thanks for allowing me to share my little world with you.
Warmly,
Melinda

Opening Reception: Friday, February 12, 2010... 5:30-7:30 PM. See you there!

GUEST ARTIST

By combining her fine arts and textile design backgrounds, Nancy Schmitt creates unique vessels, wall hangings and wearables made of felted wool. Her passion for working with wool fiber, along with the organic nature of the medium, help her connect the ancient traditions of felt making with modern artistry. Because wool is an organic medium, she must be willing to surrender preconceived design notions and allow the fiber to develop its own unique shape and form. The surface becomes truly three dimensional with the addition of beads that capture and reflect light. Sculptural cuts in the matte wool add texture and expose color changes in the fiber layers.

NEW WEBSITE

From Sarah Abel DeLuca

Hello OTA Friends and Supporters,

In September I doffed my Off Track Art member hat to don a new one: that of #1 fan.

The OTA member hat was one that I was very proud and happy to wear, but when it became difficult to do justice to both my co-op commitments and my core artist activities -- commissioned painting and teaching -- I knew I had to let something go.

Fortunately, the decision was simple, though hardly easy. Capturing people's memories in paint (via commissioned painting) and helping them tap into their own artistic potential (via art classes) is not only my livelihood, it's my purpose in life. And I'm not actually losing anything by switching hats. As an OTA fan, I still keep in touch with my talented co-op friends, support their great venture, and mingle with the wonderful community of art lovers who make it all possible.

Thanks for your support and patronage, and I look forward to seeing you at OTA events! You can reach me at any time for commissioned paintings, classes (private or public), and speaking engagements:

Airborne art creates a magical world Walking into the Carroll Arts Center’s Tevis Gallery right now is like walking through the looking glass. On the other side is a somewhat surreal, magical world, sparkly objects floating all around you, brightly colored fish swimming right by you, a green lizard walking across the ceiling, a skeleton dancing to its own tune. This is one different art exhibit.

Exhibits, Ain’t That a Frame move from chaos to art Transitions can be disconcerting. So I was reminded when I received the call from Mom, distraught because all of our preparations for the digital television transition had been for naught. No signal was coming through.

Art in the Park shines on a perfect day I woke up early last Saturday morning and listened. Silence. I have a metal roof, so I can hear rain, even a drizzle. But I heard nothing but the birds. The outdoor art festival season in Carroll County would have a good start.

Unexpected art makes wedding special I went to a wedding last weekend, full of the usual smiles and tears that are always a part of such celebrations. It was also full of art, although I doubt more than a few of us took note. But noticed or not, the art was there.

Sculpture born using ‘lost wax’ A while back, I wrote about a presentation on space. Not the final frontier, but the way negative space informs the positive in both music and the visual arts, the enigma inherent in needing emptiness to make sense of the whole.

Pen Women show artistic talents I was confused. Not an unusual occurrence, I’ll grant you, but the Carroll Arts Center was playing with my mind.

Finding crazy in being normal McDaniel College has an abundance of art students. At least that’s how it seems these days, with one senior show after another highlighting the work of new artists about to be launched out into the world.

Pam Zappardino at Corbit’s Charge

Journalist and artist Pam Zappardino at the 7th commemoration ceremonies of Corbit’s Charge in Westminster June 27, 2009.

When I visited the re-enactment encampment at the 7th commemoration ceremonies of Corbit’s Charge in Westminster, I spotted one of the “lady camp followers” from a distance.

As I got closer I was happy to see that it was Dr. Pam Zappardino… And the rest is history…
