New exhibit at Walters Art Museum showcases the statues of Maryland artist William Rinehart - By Mary Carole McCauley The Baltimore Sun

New exhibit at Walters Art Museum showcases the statues of Maryland artist William Rinehart By Mary Carole McCauley The Baltimore Sun http://www.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/arts/bs-ae-walters-rinehart-20150411-story.html#page=1

The abracadabra of sculpture's appeal

The master and a modern-day disciple

How many Rinehart sculptures can you find on a walk around town?

At a first look and even at a second, you'd swear it was magic.

Those three white towels, two folded neatly and the third rumpled and hanging every which way — surely they're made of terrycloth and purchased at a department store, not carved from white Carrara marble in a stone quarry by the 34-year-old Baltimore artist Sebastian Martorana.

Those two little boys curled up on a mattress, their heads barely heavy enough to dimple a pillow — surely they'll wake up any moment from their nap. But that nap, which was carved in stone by the master sculptor William Rinehart, has been going on undisturbed since 1869.

"Rinehart's Studio: Rough Stone to Living Marble," the new exhibition running at the Walters Art Museum, makes a strong case for the undiluted trickery that lies at the heart of sculpture's appeal.

Textile artist Sue Helmken to open exhibit at Off Track Art in Westminster Fri March 7, 2014 - Kevin Dayhoff http://westminster.patch.com/groups/kevin-e-dayhoffs-blog/p/textile-artist-sue-helmken-to-open-exhibit-at-off-track-art-in-westminster-friday-evening-march-7-2014
When: Friday, March 7, 2014 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at the Off Track Art gallery at 11 Liberty Street Side Entrance in historic downtown Westminster:

Sue Helmken is a textile artist with over 30 years’ experience in weaving, dyeing and teaching.

According to information provided by the gallery and the artists, Ms. Helmken earned a B.A. in Design at East Carolina University and has continued learning new techniques by experimenting and by studying with fiber artists such as Madelyn Van der Hoogt, Alice Schlein, Barbara Cooper, Donna Sullivan, Jozef Bajus, and Holly Brackmann.  She also studied at the Penland School of Crafts and the Corcoran College of Art and Design.

Experimenting with new techniques and non-traditional materials is her favorite challenge. Mixing wire and yarn, she weaves narrow bands and shapes them into 3-dimensional forms.

Some are patterned after natural forms while others mimic fashion accessories.  She also weaves clothing and accessories.

Ms. Helmken uses a variety of yarns and fibers to develop cloth with textures and patterns not found in commercially woven fabric.

Ecclesiastical pieces such as stoles, banners, and altar cloths are another facet of her work.

Ms. Helmken has been a juried member of Gallery 209 in Savannah, GA, Fiberworks Gallery and The Potomac Fibersrts Gallery in the Torpedo Factory of Alexandria, VA, Studio Fiberarts at the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, VA.

Her work has been accepted in juried
shows throughout the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, most recently at AASU Gallery, The Blackrock Arts Center, Sweetwater Center for the Arts, The Art League of Alexandria, VA, and The Workhouse Center for the Arts.

Join the artists of Off Track Art to welcome an exhibit by award-winning nationally acclaimed artists John and Deborah Sosnowsky, creators of jewelry, art and music. “John and Debby have been making, designing and handcrafting Jewelry, Art & Music full time since 1980,” according to the website sozra.com. Photo courtesy of John and Debby Sosnowsky

The opening for the Sosnowsky exhibition will be on November 15, 2013 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Off Track Art, 11 Liberty Street, Side Entrance Westminster, MD.

Meet artists John and Debby, who have been designing and handcrafting jewelry, art and music since 1980. Jewelry includes signature niobium and carnelian pieces, and we will enjoy their music as well. Work on view and for sale until Dec. 22, 2013. Parking, refreshments.

“John and Debby have been making, designing and handcrafting Jewelry, Art & Music full time since 1980,” according to the website sozra.com.

“They met at Towson State University in the Art department. John's concentration was in photography and Debby's was in Fabric Design and Weaving.

“Shortly after they were married, they decided to combine their talents to create a jewelry business. John's music and art is a never-ending creative endeavor. His 5th CD Multiverse Vortex will be coming out in the fall of 2013. The music is an extension of the Multiverse Vortex 2D Art series.”

“John Sosnowsky is a graduate of Towson State University and a native Marylander current residing in Frederick County. With his wife Debby he has been teaching, demonstrating and creating jewelry, Art and Music full time for over 30 years under the name Sozra Studio.

“He has been the onsite juror of the Pittsburgh Three River Arts Festival, served on the Maryland Renaissance Arts and Craft Board and the Artist Market Chair of the Frederick Festival of the Arts. John is a contemporary Artist. His work is sold through various juried shows, galleries and on the web at www.sozra.com

John Sosnowsky elaborated upon his concept of “Geometric Surrealism,” in his artist statement:

“Beauty and harmony in nature are defined by their simplicity and apparently effortless existence. Art, regardless of tradition, time, historical relevance or medium has attempted to recreate and mimic nature since the first intentional lines were drawn in the soil beneath primitive feet.

“As my experiences through travel, study, and technology would have it, the medium and creative direction my art has taken spans continents, religions, time and a multitude of resources. In an attempt to recreate the beauty and harmony I have emanating in my being, my experiences and imagination have converged with simple geometry, high technology and ancient symbolism to bring an element of timelessness and universality to the piece before you.

“These pieces are meant to evoke comfort and curiosity, calm through chaos, and the untraditional through convention. Enjoy the juxtaposition of each piece as simplicity draws you into complexity.

“All human construct evolves from basic laws of existence. In the case of visual arts, we remember basic geometry. Nothing starts without a point. Two points may connect a rigid line. Yet a series of points can give semblance to a wave or abstraction of sorts. Regardless of time, space, culture or belief these are the rules we abide by in our visual creations of ‘art.’ With this collection I hope to bring you on a positive, visual journey that spans all that is known while remaining simple.

“With a Bachelor’s Degree in Art from Towson University, I have been working for over 30 years, with my wife Debby, creating and selling art at juried shows and galleries.”

Smallwood artist Jerry DeWitt to display critically acclaimed rural farm paintings at Off Track Art in Westminster.

Smallwood artist Jerry DeWitt to display critically acclaimed rural farm paintings at Off Track Art in Westminster.

Show opens with a reception for the artist on Friday, September 7, 2012 at 5:30 to 7:30 at Off Track Art, [http://offtrackart.blogspot.com/] 11 Liberty Street – side entrance in the Liberty Building in historic downtown Westminster. The show will continue through October.

By Kevin Dayhoff, kevindayhoff@gmail.com

Off Track Art is celebrating the art of Jerry DeWitt for its first opening of the fall season on Friday, Sept. 7th, 2012 from 5:30--7:30, to show his beautiful watercolors from a variety of locales including Carroll County.

Mr. DeWitt, a Smallwood, Carroll County Maryland artist, has just returned from Montana and Michigan. Earlier in the year, this past March, Mr. DeWitt was the featured artist in the Babylon Great Hall at Carroll Community College. [http://kevindayhoffart.blogspot.com/2012/03/jerry-dewitt-discusses-his-farm.html] The highly successful show was well-received and the opening was packed. It has been reported that Mr. DeWitt sold a large number of painting at the Carroll Community College show…

“Jerry DeWitt was born in Michigan in 1933 and has been painting, primarily watercolors, since his teenage years,” according to information provided by the artist…

“Over 300 paintings hang in homes and businesses from Alaska to Florida. His work has been shown in galleries in Washington, DC; Montana; and Maryland. Mr. DeWitt’s Montana paintings were featured in American Artist magazine.

“Mr. DeWitt enjoys traveling, and has series of paintings from Maine and from Frederick and Carroll Counties. His subjects are often old farm buildings or homes, as he strives to capture and retain the spirit of American places of the heart.

“Viewers may be drawn to tranquil scenes and transported to a quieter, more peaceful time. He has a special affinity for birds and has painted many species. Jerry has framed many of his paintings in old barn wood, sometimes from the very site portrayed.

“Most notable of these paintings is his award-winning portrait of the Wye Oak, framed in the wood from that famous tree.

According to an article about Mr. DeWitt’s work by critically acclaimed Carroll County artist, photographer, and writer, Phil Grout, “When Jerry DeWitt paints a barn, there's a bit of the gentle clanging of cowbells mixing in with the watercolors. [http://kevindayhoffart.blogspot.com/2012/03/smallwood-artist-jerry-dewitt-draws.html]

“That sound echoes back to his grandfather's Depression-era farm at the end of a lane in Bedford County, Pa. He was just 2 years old when his father left home for good and the youngster was uprooted from Lansing, Mich., to live with his grandparents.

“And in between trips to the pasture to the hand-dug well for another bucket of water, or out to the shed for an arm load of firewood, the sights and sounds and smells of farm life wrapped themselves around Jerry's memory, eventually finding their way to paint and paper more than 30 years later…

After Mr. DeWitt served in the Navy during the Korean War, “became a house carpenter building houses in Maryland and Florida.

“Years later, with his wife, Kris, and four children, Jerry answered his calling — back on the farm, with paints and brushes instead of water bucket and firewood. The family went to Florida for a visit to his wife's parents. Jerry stayed behind in Hagerstown.

“He had a week all to himself. So he went to a five and 10 store in town and bought a set of watercolors and some brushes and then headed out to a barn he'd spotted many times along Interstate-70 on his way to a house construction site.

“DeWitt was 37 when he sat out there on the east side of Cosen's Barn with his new set of paints.

“‘That was it. Time disappeared,’ he says. ‘Something was opening up inside of me, and I could hear those cowbells. I could smell my grandfather's barn.’”

For more information and photographs of Mr. DeWitt and his work, see Phil Grout’s article, “Smallwood artist Jerry DeWitt draws creative inspiration from his farm past,” in the Baltimore Sun on March 17, 2012, about Mr. DeWitt’s work and his well-received and highly successful show at Carroll Community College.
