Wormseed was once a growing industry in the county [Eagle Archives]

Wormseed was once a growing industry in the county [Eagle Archives]

"The economy, jobs creation, and unemployment continue to be in the national and state news these days.

Locally, the business and economic climate has changed in the last few years. To be certain, change has been a constant dynamic in the local economy since the beginnings of our county in the 1700s.

The one thing that has remained the same in spite of all the changes, is that agriculture continues to be a major industry in Carroll.

But one agricultural product many younger readers may not be familiar with that has not withstood the test of time is an ancient medicine known for its distinctive, unpleasant smell — wormseed."

Cycling's connection to Carroll County includes clubs and races in 1800s [Eagle Archives]

According to the website for the Le Tour de France (Letour.com), the final, 21st stage of this year's 101st edition of the famed European bicycle race will take place on July 27. For the riders, it will mark the end of a journey of 3,664 kilometers, from England to Paris by way of much of France that began on July 5.

Did you know that a number of celebrated bicycle races took place in Carroll County, years before the Tour de France began in 1903?

In Carroll County in the late 1890s, bicycle races, tours and clubs were quite the rage.

Cathy Baty, curator for the Historical Society of Carroll County, reported in a July 28, 2013 program, "Old Roots, New Roots," on WTTR, that "The first machine that we would recognize as a bicycle was developed in 1865.

First legislative assembly in America — History.com This Day in History — 7/30/1619:

"In Jamestown, Virginia, the first elected legislative assembly in the New World--the House of Burgesses--convenes in the choir of the town's church.

Earlier that year, the London Company, which had established the Jamestown settlement 12 years before, directed Virginia Governor Sir George Yeardley to summon a "General Assembly" elected by the settlers, with every free adult male voting. Twenty-two representatives from the 11 Jamestown boroughs were chosen, and Master John Pory was appointed the assembly's speaker. On July 30, the House of Burgesses (an English word for "citizens") convened for the first time"

Liberty Reservoir Day celebrates local watershed on Saturday July 26, 2014. Baltimore’s Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, co-chair of of the US Conference of Mayors Water Council, will be in attendance and is looking forward to seeing all of you.

There will be lots of entertainment and big trucks for the kids to climb aboard…

Baltimore Public Works Director Rudolph S. Chow said that with events like Liberty Reservoir Day, “It is important that we provide our water customers the opportunity to learn about our watershed lands through educational, yet also fun, events like Liberty Reservoir Day.”

By Kevin E. Dayhoff, July 11, 2014

On July 26, the Baltimore City Department of Public Works
will again celebrate Liberty Reservoir Day in the recreation area right above
the reservoir dam on the North Branch of the Patapsco River.

Last year's Liberty Reservoir Day event was well attended and according to Kurt Kocher, the department's spokesman, the department would like to build upon last year's success.
[…]

"Baltimore and Westminster have a long standing partnership that goes back decades," said Westminster public works director Jeff Glass. "Maintaining a sustainable water supply for all our
customers is a constant focus."

[…]

The free event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the dam on Liberty Dam Road off Wards Chapel Road. Parking is free. For information, call 410-545-6541 or go to http://www.baltimorecity.gov.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the dedication of Liberty Dam, which is
located in eastern Carroll County at the border with Baltimore County.

According to a history of Liberty reservoir written for the Historical Society of Carroll County by historian Mary Ann Ashcraft several years ago in the Carroll County Times, "Baltimore Mayor Thomas D'Alesandro, Jr. dedicated Liberty Dam on September 21, 1954 …."

Architectural Competition Held to Rebuild Königsberg City Center - SPIEGEL ONLINE By Susanne Beyer in Kaliningrad, Russia

Architectural Competition Held to Rebuild Königsberg City Center - SPIEGEL ONLINEBy Susanne Beyer in Kaliningrad, Russia

http://www.spiegel.de/international/zeitgeist/architectural-competition-held-to-rebuild-koenigsberg-city-center-a-980260.html#ref=nl-international

The Allies bombed the Prussian city of Königsberg into the ground in 1944. Residents of what is today the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, a desolate Soviet landscape, are considering rebuilding the city center to reflect some of its historical German architecture.

"The architectural bureau looks pretty much like any other in Europe -- computer drawings hang on the walls, attractive young women concentrate as they stare into oversized monitors. Even the head of the office is wearing outsize glasses.

What's different here, though, are the odd place names featured in the plans. Rather than being in Russian as one would expect, they include German names such as Altstadt, or Old Town, Löbenicht, Kneipfhof.

These were the names of the city center districts in the city of Königsberg in the former East Prussia, but Königsberg was wiped from the map at the end of World War II, 70 years ago. The city had a grand history as the coronation site for Prussian kings.

It was famous for its university, where philosopher Immanuel Kant once taught. In 1724, the year of Kant's birth, the cities of Altstadt, Löbenicht and Kneiphof joined together to form the city of Königsberg. With its brick, Renaissance and baroque buildings, with a medieval castle on the Pregel River, with its Brick Gothic cathedral and its proximity to the Baltic Sea, it was one of Germany's most beautiful cities.

During the final days of August 1944, 360 aircraft with the Royal Air Force flew across the sea heading for Königsberg. They dropped hundreds of tons of highly explosive and incendiary bombs. The city continued to burn for days."

Recreation in Westminster always a hot topic during summer [Column]

Recreation in Westminster always a hot topic during summer [Column]

The City of Westminster and Carroll County's Department of Recreation and Parks have joined the National Recreation and Parks Association in celebrating National Recreation and Parks Month.

According to NRPA.org, the theme for this year's month-long celebration is "OUT is IN."

On April 7, 1922, the Democratic Advocate published an editorial about "Westminster and the recreation problem."

"Our fathers did not have recreational centers. Why should we have them now? Our fathers did not have telephones, automobiles, electric lights, rural free delivery of mails, and many other conveniences which we now enjoy. Shall we dispense with them because they were unknown to the previous generation?

"We cannot do business as our fathers did. Can we take our recreation as they did? In the early days work and play were combined. The men of a community would gather for 'clearing the new ground,' 'log rollings,' 'barn raisings.' 'harvesting parties' 'husking bees,' and the like.

"At the same time the women had their 'quilting parties' and did the cooking for the community feast. In the evening there were the community plays. Those days are gone never to return." ....

History News Network | Found yew! The 'oldest tree in Europe' discovered in a Welsh cemetery:

http://kevindayhoffart.blogspot.com/2014/07/history-news-network-found-yew-oldest.html

"The yew tree is more than 5,000 years old, from the era 3,000BC.

It started growing nearly 500 years before the Pharaohs built the Great Pyramid of Giza.

And it was a sapling at about the time work first began on building Stonehenge.

The 60ft wide tree’s age has been revealed by experts who carried out ring dating and DNA analysis." http://hnn.us/article/156299
