This just in from the latest edition of the SPJ newsletter

This just in from the latest edition of the SPJ newsletter

July 4, 2018

“And, in light of the tragedy at the Capital Gazette in
Annapolis, Maryland, let us not forget that the willingness to sign your name
to an article, a column, a masthead continues to require an uncommon bravery we
often take for granted.” -- Christopher Carosa, president of the National Society of Newspaper Columnists, for USA Today.

WHAT'S HAPPENING

People are still talking about Annapolis after a man armed
with a shotgun and smoke grenades stormed into the newsroom of a community
newspaper chain in Maryland’s capital on Thursday afternoon, killing five staff members, injuring two others. It
prompted law enforcement agencies across the country to provide protection at
the headquarters of media organizations.

You can help honor the memories of the Capital Gazette
journalists by acknowledging a moment of silence. At 2:33 p.m. EDT Thursday,
SPJ will join journalism groups and newsrooms around the globe in a moment of
silence to honor the five employees who were killed.

To help newsrooms protect their journalists, ASNE and APME
have created a tip sheet explaining how to react if an aggressor enters the building.

In another act of violence against a journalist, Crime
Reporter José Guadalupe Chan Dzib, who was murdered Friday night in Quintana Roo, had been threatened
but was not provided with official protection, the United Nations Office
of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Mexico (OHCHR) revealed.

High school educators across the country have been clamping
down on students who publish articles on protests, sexuality, and other
hot-button issues. The killing of the opinion piece on the National School
Walkout protest was the third instance of conflict between John Burdett, the
principal of Prosper High School in Prosper, Texas, and the school’s news
publication, Eagle Nation Online.

CafePress, an online retailer, was in hot water for selling T-shirts emblazoned with the
phrase “Rope. Tree. Journalist. Some assembly required.” CafePress pulled the
shirts soon after the outcry began, but then the question shifted to why it
carried them in the first place. The message has been seen on t-shirts at Trump rallies for almost two years. But the fury over
the message has increased since last week, when five journalists were killed in
a shooting at the Capital Gazette newspaper in
Annapolis, Maryland.

CNN Chief Medical Correspondent Sanjay Gupta has appeared in
at least one advertisement for his brother’s Democratic congressional campaign,
raising questions about his objectivity in reporting on the
president’s health. At the very least, experts say, it creates the perception
of bias. (And we all know what the SPJ Code of Ethics says about that.)

June 14, 1995 Ubiquitous 'mean streets' are journalists' freeways By MIKE ROYKO http://articles.baltimoresun.com/1995-06-14/news/1995165177_1_streets-newsday-new-york

America's streets are in terrible shape. And I'm not talking about potholes, busted curbs or blinky street lights.

No, the problem is that so many of our streets are really mean. This meanness is sweeping the country and spreading to foreign lands.

I made this discovery recently after hearing a TV war correspondent refer to snipers shooting people on "the mean streets of Sarajevo."

It seemed to me that I had read or heard the phrase "mean streets" before.

Using a computer service, I searched for the words "mean streets" in dozens of newspapers.

The search covered only the first five months of this year. But the results were frightening. Here are just a few of the mean streets that were found.

Lester Bangs - America's greatest rock journalist.

Lester Bangs - America's greatest rock journalist.

America's greatest rock journalist. Died way too young: December 14, 1948 – April 30, 1982.

Lester Bangs is the folk hero of every freelance writer. In the early 1970s I was inspired to write as much stuff as I could and send it in to as many magazines and newspapers as possible dreaming of getting a break like Mr. Bangs did in 1969.

Alas, all I did was collect an extremely impressive collection of wonderfully worded rejection letters. His writing was awesome and back in the day I tried to read everything he wrote... For years I saved a box of his stuff from Rolling Stone and later, Creem.

His death on April 30, 1982 was a harsh lesson in reality for all of us with a typewriter and a dream. For a classic adventure in reading, try: "Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung: The Work of a Legendary Critic: Rock 'n' Roll as Literature and Literature as Rock 'n' Roll," published posthumously in 1987...

Lester Bangs Comes to Life Onstage in 'How to Be a Rock Critic'
Inside the Los Angeles play based on the writings of the cantankerous journalism icon

"A hero is a goddamn stupid thing to have," legendary rock critic Lester Bangs said two weeks ago. Actually, it was actor Erik Jensen, impersonating Bangs — his hero. The setting was a rehearsal room at the Kirk Douglas Theatre in the Culver City neighborhood of Los Angeles, where Jensen and director Jessica Blank were working on the one-man play they wrote about Bangs (who died in 1982, at age 33), How to Be a Rock Critic. On a set depicting Bangs' living room, cluttered with stacks of vinyl records and empty bottles of beer and cough syrup, Jensen brought Bangs back to life, right down to the mustache and the DETROIT SUCKS T-shirt: hectoring, joking, lecturing, fumbling towards a state of grace… http://www.rollingstone.com/culture/news/lester-bangs-comes-to-life-onstage-in-how-to-be-a-rock-critic-20150616

From cell phone video to podcasts, citizens and advocates shape national agenda

But what's left for mainstream media?

The past week has been a lesson in journalistic humility for me.

After a career of thinking and writing about how the kind of mainstream journalistic institutions at which I worked set the local and national agenda, I had a moment of clarity with a voice in my head saying, "Not so much any more, my self-important friend."

[…]

… I couldn't help but think how much the onscreen story of this police shooting was again the result of what was done by a single citizen with a cellphone — not by a network or a cable news channel with all their multimillion-dollar talent and resources….

[…]

Chaudry acknowledges that "journalists definitely have different roles than activists and advocates."

Mediabistro Morning Media Newsfeed - 9/3/2014 American Journalist Steven Sotloff Reportedly Beheaded by ISIS

American Journalist Steven Sotloff Reportedly Beheaded by ISIS (TVNewser)
Two weeks after James Foley was beheaded by ISIS, American journalist Steven Sotloff has reportedly been executed by the same group.

FishbowlDC "This is something that the administration has obviously been watching very carefully since this threat against Mr. Sotloff's life was originally made a few weeks ago," said White House press secretary Josh Earnest Tuesday afternoon. Earnest went on to say, "I'm not in a position to confirm the authenticity of that video or the reports at this point since I obviously just walked out here. If there is a video that has been released, it is something that will be analyzed very carefully by the U.S. government and our intelligence officials to determine its authenticity."

ABC News In a new video, which appeared online Tuesday, Sotloff addresses the camera, saying, "I'm sure you know exactly who I am by now and why I am appearing." Later the video then cuts to the militant who says, "I'm back, Obama. I'm back because of your arrogant foreign policy towards the Islamic State [ISIS]."

Politico Sotloff, 31, grew up in Florida and was a freelance journalist, having worked for publications like Time magazine and Foreign Policy. He was taken hostage while reporting in Syria last year. WSJ The Islamic State video also showed a man identified as Briton David Cawthorne Haines. He is kneeling and wearing an orange jumpsuit as the militant threatens to kill him next. A U.S. official said there is no reason to believe the video isn't authentic.

USA Today The U.S. intelligence community has concluded that a video appearing to show the beheading of Sotloff is genuine.

Kasell will record his final "Wait Wait" broadcast this spring and celebration shows are planned in Chicago and DC. Kasell became an audience favorite as the Official Judge and Scorekeeper of "Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me!" Cape Town, South Africa!

Here I am in all my glory sitting on top of Table Mountain in Cape Town, Africa.

I was very blessed to spend New Year's vacation in Cape Town, South Africa last week and let me tell you, that place is pretty epic!
Cape Town, located in the Western part of the country, has a rich cultural history.
The city was colonized by the Dutch and is the place where Nelson Mandela spent nearly 20 years as a political prisoner on Robben Island.
There was so much history to be learned but also so much fun to be had... Read more: http://make-upmusicmoneyme.blogspot.com/2014/01/cape-town-south-africa.html

Rick Steves: Greece in Economic Crisis and Your Travel Dreams

Rick Steves checking out the impact of the economic crisis in Greece

June 11, 2012 http://blog.ricksteves.com/?p=7675 Retrieved December 2, 2012

With all the news about Greece’s economic problems, people are wondering whether it’s a good time to go there or not. I’ve surveyed my Tour Department and our Greek guides who live and work in Greece, and here’s my report…

My guides report that our Greece tours so far this spring have been as smooth and fun as ever — virtually unaffected by the local political and economic events

The big concern among the hotels and restaurants we use in Greece is whether they’ll be able to survive the downturn in tourism as many postpone their travels there, fearing “instability.” And many sights are running on their shorter winter schedules for lack of money to staff the longer summer hours.

… First and foremost, Greece is a safe place to visit. In fact, it’s a good time to visit because you will be made especially welcome. Tourism is Greece’s heavy industry and its leading employer.
It seems to me that US media coverage of Greece has been nothing less than hysterical — just plain silly at times, and woefully lacking in analysis. Greeks are emotional people, and they are given to outbursts of anger — as well as outbursts of joy. Their bad governments in recent times have given them plenty of reasons to be angry. The scenes in Syntagma, the big square immediately in front of the Greek parliament building, are a symptom of this — and act as a release valve. These scenes occur only when the parliament is voting on the hated austerity measures. When you see riots on TV, they are generally the work of a group of anarchists who are limited to Syntagma and know how to get on the news.

The big debate politically is austerity (from the right) versus no austerity (from the left). Until this all sorts itself out, I would recommend that travelers do not wear “Angela Merkel” masks. Regardless of how the debate turns out, and who emerges as the new government, Greeks of all political stripes will take care of tourism, so vital to its struggling economy. The Greeks, a welcoming people at any time, will be doubly appreciative of any visitors in these difficult circumstances.

The main impact on travelers as Greece struggles through this period will be: shorter hours of sights; intermittent strikes; and friends and loved ones back home wondering if Americans traveling in Greece are okay… http://blog.ricksteves.com/?p=7675

Kevin Dayhoff - The Tentacle: A Tribute to David Broder, A Reporter’s Reporter

March 16, 2011  http://tinyurl.com/4r4ahfv

David Broder, A Reporter’s Reporter
David S. Broder, 81, the well-respected dean of letters for The Washington Post for over four decades, has died from complications of diabetes.

In an era when too many writers shoot from the hip with commentary that is only rivaled by a bar room conversation with an inebriated unicorn, Mr. Broder always seemed to have a certain depth and gravitas to his work.

A prolific writer, The New York Times noted “Mr. Broder, whose last column was published February 6, was often called the dean of the Washington press corps and just as often described as a reporter’s reporter, a shoe-leather guy who always got on one more airplane, knocked on one more door, made one more phone call.

“He would travel more than 100,000 miles a year to write more than a quarter-million words. In short, he composed first drafts of history for an awful lot of history.”

In spite of that level of productivity, in the week since his death, I have been a bit unnerved by how many of my colleagues are not aware of the life and work of such a distinguished journalist, who seemed to effortlessly sit on either side of the typewriter as a hard-news newspaperman and a political commentator.

Although many could not recall his work at The Washington Post, it was only after I called attention to his numerous appearances on Washington Weekand Meet the Press that Mr. Broder came to life...  http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=4284
