Articles in Explore Carroll in the last several years by Kevin Dayhoff that mention McDaniel College

12/13/2010 – 12/29/2010

At a social function earlier in December, a reader had asked where they may find my articles on Western Maryland College - McDaniel College

Here are the results of s quick search…  I know that there are quite a bit more – going back to 2004, however, Explore Carroll’s current website only goes back a few years…

Also, if you type in McDaniel into the search engine in the right hand column of Soundtrack - http://kevindayhoff.blogspot.com/, quite a few stories pop-up: http://kevindayhoff.blogspot.com/search/label/Colleges%20McDaniel?updated-max=2010-07-24T19:57:00-04:00&max-results=20#uds-search-results

Fred Plunkert displays his 50-year pin.

Dan Plunkert, the son of Fred Plunkert, congratulates his Dad for 50 years of service at the December meeting of the Westminster fire company as the president of the fire department, Bob Cumberland, (left,) Joe Ebaugh, partially obscured behind Dan and Jamie Petry, fire department secretary look on.

And:

Veteran firefighter Fred Plunkert was honored for 50-years of service at the December meeting of the Westminster Fire Engine and Hose Co. 1.

“I joined the fire company on December 7, 1960,” Plunkert said later.  “But that wasn’t the beginning of me and the fire company.  When I got out of the service the first job I had was for the fire company.  I was a paid man at the fire department.”

The Westminster fire department has had paid help since the 1920s to ensure full-time coverage to the community for fire and ambulance service.

Plunkert simply explained, “They had a job opening,” when asked why he got involved with the fire service.  He had grown-up on a farm just north of Westminster in was then known as Mt. Pleasant – on Route 97 near the intersection of Stone Road…  http://www.explorecarroll.com/community/5023/plunkert-cited-50-years-westminster-fire-company-responder/

DAYHOFF: In Christmas past, county leaders and community celebrations made the news

Eagle Archive - DAYHOFF: In Christmas past, county leaders and community celebrations made the news, By Kevin Dayhoff shar.es/Xtm5U

"...Paradoxically, at a time when we look forward to spending more time with our families, friends and loved ones, the folks who provide so much to our quality of life are spending more time away from their families than at any other time of the year.

To make matters worse, recently the weather has been frightfully cold; making matters that more unbearable.

"Please keep folks such as firefighters, police officers, teachers and public works personnel in your hearts and your prayers as you enjoy the holiday season."

[...]

It was 40 years ago that one local community leader got his start, and made the news. The now-defunct newspaper, the Community Reporter, carried an article Dec. 11, 1970, noting that "Richard N. Dixon, 32 years of age and the first black to assume a post on the Carroll County School Board, was sworn into office last week."
