TEARS IN RAIN | Why is it so special?

TEARS IN RAIN | Why is it so special? The final words of Roy Batty is arguably the best scene in Blade Runner. But what makes it so powerful? In order to fully understand what makes this speech so special is to try to understand Roy Batty.  As the movie ends, Roy sums up his entire journey with Tears In Rain.

Blade Runner, as briefly explained well by another writer, Canadalorian, “Harrison Ford stars in this fascinating, dark vision of the near future as a policeman who tracks engineered humans--a Blade Runner. In the year 2019, the police department forces Rick Deckard (Ford) out of retirement to hunt four genetically engineered humans who have come to earth. Designed to do difficult, hazardous work, the manufactured humans are stronger, faster and smarter than non-engineered humans. They feel no pain or remorse; they are almost indistinguishable from other humans ... and they are killing people. Now Deckard must stop them before they kill again.”

“I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.” Roy Batty in “Blade Runner,” Warner Bros., 1982

Ridley Scott on Blade Runner's Tears in Rain Monologue (2017) | Rotten T...

Rotten Tomatoes Senior Editor Grae Drake spoke to Ridley Scott, director of 'Alien: Covenant' about Rutger Hauer's famous "I've Seen Things" monologue from 'Blade Runner,' and how it came to be.

The only actor nominated for an Oscar in Spike Lee's film
"BlacKkKlansman," is white.

Feb. 24, 2019

In recent years, watching the Oscars has become tedious. For
that matter, when I did media criticism years ago for another publication, I
wrote about the Oscars becoming irrelevant mindless drivel. So many pathologically
narcissistic Hollywood-types examining their navel with a cracked mirror.

In the latest Oscar death rattle: according to an article I
found on Yahoo, “Aubrey Plaza rips on Oscars and Netflix in hilarious Spirit
Awards monologue:”  https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/aubrey-plaza-rips-oscars-netflix-005201592.html
which first appeared in USA TODAY, “The host of the Spirit Awards, Aubrey
Plaza, used part of her opening monologue to make fun of the Oscars…

“Another part of Plaza's monologue that got plenty of laughs
was about Spike Lee's film "BlacKkKlansman," because its only actor
nominated is a Caucasian star.

" 'BlacKkKlansman' explores the struggle of a black
police officer to find his role in the fight against white supremacy. So
congratulations to the sole nominee from that film today, Adam Driver. We are
so proud of you. You were the best one. I’m sure they’ll do the white
thing."

You cannot make this up. I have not watched the Oscars in
years. It is no longer relevant. It killed itself with its pathological narcissistic
personality defect.

July 7, 1929 “Pleasure Crazed” movie set

July 7, 1929 “Pleasure Crazed” movie set.

Kevin Dayhoff February 5, 2019

This is a picture featuring an elegant art nouveau – art deco
entranceway from the set from an obscure black and white American movie, “Pleasure
Crazed,” which was released by Fox Film Corporation on July 7, 1929.

The movie was based upon “The Scent of Sweet Almonds” by
Monckton Hoffe and features themes involving a poor writer, con-artists, intrigue,
deception, infidelity, and suicide.

The 60-minute film was directed by Donald Gallaher and
Charles Klein and written by Douglas Z. Doty and Clare Kummer. The
cinematographers were Glen MacWilliams and Ernest Palmer. It was edited by J.
Edwin Robbins.

The melodramatic movie featured the work of Marguerite
Churchill, Kenneth MacKenna, Dorothy Burgess, Campbell Gullan, Douglas Gilmore,
and Henry Kolker.

The movie was made when the Great Depression was just beginning
and film design and technology were in its infancy. It was a time when art deco
was transitioning into ‘modernism,’ and many highly stylized movies and
literary works featured the excesses of the life of the rich and famous. In
retrospect, many historians view the era as an attempt to distract much of the
population from the rigors and depravations of the Great Depression.

It is hard to find information about the movie. According to
the American Film Institute, an April 21, 1920 New York Times news item, “Fox
bought the rights to Monckton Hoffe's story, which was written as a play but
never produced. The same article included Earle Foxe in the cast, but his
appearance in the released film has not been confirmed…

“Alma Dean and her husband, Anthony, rent a house from a
trio of crooks who have the intention of stealing the wife's jewels. The female
member of the group remains in the guise of a housekeeper, and gradually she
and Anthony become very fond of each other.

“In the meantime, Alma is playing around with a poor writer,
and Anthony, miserable, leaves her, accidentally carrying away a flask
containing poison.

“Previously, the writer dared Alma to commit suicide, but
when she sees her husband take this very flask, she says nothing. The
"housekeeper," learning of the state of affairs, chases after Anthony
and wrecks her car at the garage where he is buying gasoline. The situation is
satisfactorily resolved…”

Babette’s Feast’ is scheduled to shown at the Carroll Arts Center

Babette’s Feast’ is scheduled to shown at the Carroll Arts Center at 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on November 16, 2018.

Carroll Arts Center
91 W Main St, Westminster, Maryland 21157

Sadly, Stéphane Audran just passed away on March 27, 2018. Read more here: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/27/obituaries/stephane-audran-who-starred-in-babettes-feast-dies-at-85.html. We can all agree that the Françoise Nyssen, France’s culture minister said it best, ““her presence, her elegance and her inimitable voice remain and resonate.”

According to the NY Times, “Although ‘Babette’s Feast’ was her best-known movie internationally — it won the Oscar for best foreign language film in 1988 — Ms. Audran by then had been famous for decades in France, most notably for her work in the films of the director Claude Chabrol, to whom she was married from 1964 to 1980."

According to the Carroll Arts Center, “Beautiful but pious sisters Martine (Birgitte Federspiel) and Philippa (Bodil Kjer) grow to spinsterhood under the wrathful eye of their strict pastor father on the forbidding and desolate coast of Jutland, until one day, Philippa's former suitor sends a Parisian refugee named Babette (Stéphane Audran) to serve as the family cook. Babette's lavish celebratory banquet tempts the family's dwindling congregation, who abjure such fleshly pleasures as fine foods and wines.

“Film Lovers in Carroll County (FLICC) continues their annual tradition of screening a movie right before Thanksgiving that brings attention to hunger in our own community along with a canned food drive. Bring a non-perishable food item and get a free small popcorn.

“Eye in the Sky”

“Eye in the Sky”

I watched this taut British thriller while flying home from Paris recently. Not only did it help me pass the time on a long flight, but I really recommend it. Read this review by Rolling Stone writer, Peter Travers, from March 9, 2016 http://www.rollingstone.com/movies/reviews/eye-in-the-sky-20160309

Helen Mirren and Aaron Paul debate the merits of drone warfare in this torn-from-the-headlines drama

It's a setup for a moral debate on drone warfare. That Eye in the Sky is nowhere near that dry and academic is a tribute to director Gavin Hood (Tsotsi), who uses a tight script, by Guy Hibbert, to hold us in a vise and keep squeezing. The suspense is killer as military minds in the US and the UK come together only to lock horns on a drone operation in Nairobi.

In one corner, there's Katherine Powell (a dynamite Helen Mirren), a British army colonel ready to order a U.S. military drone to target a Somali terrorist organization believed to include two British citizens and one American. Cue the complication: Alia (Aisha Takow), a young Kenyan girl is selling bread in the kill zone.

Mondo New York - trailer

Best “beating a dead horse” scene in cinematic history

Best “beating a dead horse” scene in cinematic history, but I do not seem to be able to find a clip of the scene, when Ann Magnuson literally beat a dead horse to the theme song from the “Sound of Music,” in the camp-cult delightfully repugnant movie “Mondo New York,” about the sick and disgusting dark side of New York, New York. it will be sure to creep you out.

Here is the closest I have found on YouTube:

Mondo New York – trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-VOLwuHWcQ

The bittersweet core of the big apple, a perversely compelling tribute to the anti-stars of the city, a circa 1980s Berlin cabaret. Mondo New York is a cult classic celebration of what makes the naked city a one of a kind metropolis. With Ann Magnuson, Lydia Lunch, Joe Coleman, Dean Johnson, and much more. First authorized DVD release of this underground classic!

"È la stampa, bellezza. E tu non ci puoi fare un bel niente!"

Ed Hutcheson: It's not enough anymore to give 'em just news. They want comics, contests, puzzles. They want to know how to bake a cake, win friends, and influence the future. Ergo, horoscopes, tips on the horses, interpretation of dreams so they can win on the numbers lottery. And, if they accidentally stumble on the first page... news!

Jim Cleary: A journalist makes himself the hero of the story. A reporter is only a witness. “Deadline U.S.A.” 1952. #partylikeajournalist

On September 29, 2011, Craig Steves wrote on YouTube, “Bob Greene of the Chicago Tribune has called this the best journalism movie ever made. He is absolutely right.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kn_Y9ZU8hY8

If you are interested in art movies, see Citizen Kane. If you are interested in screwball comedy, check out His Girl Friday. If it's history you're after, watch All the Presidents Men. If you want to see a classic journalism movie, rent one of the multiple versions of The Front Page.

But if you want to see a movie that actually shows you what life is like inside a newsroom, how reporters work together to get a story, and how "the story" is not always about the big expose but sometimes just about getting the little details right, this is your movie.

You can also watch Ron Howard's The Paper, but it's a pale imitation of this movie.

The film brings up, a mere 53 years ago, issues that are relevant today - the tabloids versus real, factual news, and the meaning of a free press. These debates continue today, but unfortunately, it seems that the tabloid type of journalism is winning. As for a free press - our press might be freer than many, but it isn't entirely free. As anyone who lost money in the great savings and loan scandal can tell you, important stories disappear from the front pages all the time.

Bogart's strong performance is the engine that keeps this film going, and there's a nice performance by Kim Hunter as his ex-wife. Deadline USA reminds us of the good old days, when you could believe what you read in the New York Times.”

My Dinner With Andre BY ROGER EBERT January 1, 1981

One of my all-time favorite movies... I ran across this review, by happenstance. I have not seen the movies in ages; however as a result of reading the review, I will look forward to watching it again soon...

MY DINNER WITH ANDRE (PG)

My Dinner With Andre BY ROGER EBERT / January 1, 1981

The idea is astonishing in its audacity: a film of two friends talking, just simply talking—but with passion, wit, scandal, whimsy, vision, hope, and despair—for 110 minutes. It sounds at first like one of those underground films of the 1960s, in which great length and minimal content somehow interacted in the dope-addled brains of the audience to provide the impression of deep if somehow elusive profundity. "My Dinner with Andre" is not like that. It doesn't use all of those words as a stunt.

[...]

The two people are André Gregory and Wallace Shawn. Those are their real names, and also their names in the movie. I suppose they are playing themselves. As the film opens, Shawn travels across New York City to meet Gregory for dinner, and his thoughts provide us with background: His friend Gregory is a New York theater director, well-known into the 1970s, who dropped out for five years and traveled around the world. Now Gregory has returned, with wondrous tales of strange experiences. Shawn has spent the same years in New York, finding uncertain success as an author and playwright. They sit down for dinner in an elegant restaurant. We do not see the other customers. The bartender is a wraith in the background, the waiter is the sort of presence they were waiting for in "Waiting for Godot." The friends order dinner, and then, as it is served and they eat and drink, they talk.

What conversation!
