Details of the death of KTLA news anchor Chris Burrous released.

Details of the death of KTLA news anchor Chris Burrous released.

Apparently, it is one of those days in which it is not safe to read the news. First, there is the not so family-friendly story coming out of California about the sudden death of KTLA news anchor Chris Burrous.

Burrous, who is married to another journalist, died during a drug-enhanced – crystal meth - hook-up with another partner, who just happened to not be his wife. Oh, the details. You cannot make this stuff up. SMH.

I just do not get it. To rise to the level of accomplishment as Burrous and throw it away and die over a hook-up makes no sense.

According to the article in Yahoo, found here: https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/ktla-anchor-chris-burrous-cause-230148391.html, that is not really safe for work, “An investigative report on KTLA anchor Chris Burrous has determined that his cause of death was attributed to methamphetamine toxicity, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office. Burrous, 43, was found unconscious at a motel in Glendale, Calif on December 27, and later died at the hospital. The death has been ruled as accidental

“The coroner’s report said that in addition to the Class A drug, ‘Other contributing factors include hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.’”

Wait-wait it gets worse, if that were possible.

“Glendale police were contacted by a man who told them “an individual he was with had passed out and was possibly not breathing.” The man he was with administered CPR before Burrous was taken to the hospital. The medical emergency occurred during a sexual encounter, the report specified. It went on to explain that Burrous had met up through the Grindr app with a male companion, with whom he had met four times previously. During the encounter, Burrous inserted two “rocks” of crystal meth through his rectum before falling unconscious.

“GHB was also found at the scene, although the report indicated it had been consumed by the other man and not Burrous. The other man was not charged with any crime.

“The well-known news anchor had been a regular face on KTLA since 2011, co-anchoring the weekend edition of KTLA Morning News as well as serving as a correspondent for other KTLA telecasts. He was also one of the reporters covering the state’s recent wildfires as well as the mass shooting at Thousand Oaks’ Borderline Bar & Grill. He was also known for his “Burrous Bites” segments on local restaurants.

“Burrous is survived by his wife Mai Do-Burrous, a journalist whom he met while working at KGET, and their 9-year-old daughter.”

'Shades of Blue' Review: J. Lo Gets Low-Down Ken Tucker January 7, 2016

Ken Tucker writes for Yahoo - I watched the first episode of the new Jennifer Lopez cop drama Shades of Blue and thought, "This is kind of crazy — how are they going to make this a weekly show?"

And I immediately wanted to see a second episode. After I watched the second episode, I thought, "Wait — this is getting even more strange; how are they going to keep this thing going?

So I watched a third episode. (Thank you, NBC.) And then I have to admit, I watched a fourth. I wouldn't exactly call Shades of Blue addictive, but it certainly does keep you wondering. …

Mr. Selfridge | Mr. Selfridge | Programs | Masterpiece | PBS:

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/programs/series/mr-selfridge/

At the unfashionable end of Oxford Street in 1909 London, an American retail tycoon arrives to jettison fusty British tradition and open one of the finest department stores the world has ever seen: Selfridges. Three-time Emmy® winner Jeremy Piven (in his first television appearance since his iconic role as Hollywood agent Ari Gold in Entourage) stars as Harry Gordon Selfridge, the flamboyant entrepreneur and showman seeking to provide London's shoppers with the ultimate merchandise and the ultimate thrill.

Emmy® Award-winning writer Andrew Davies (Pride and PrejudiceBleak House) conjures the opulence and excitement of Selfridges and the story of its founder, a man of exuberant, outsized, and potentially dangerous, appetite. Behind Selfridges' lavish shop windows, gleaming counters, and majestic doors, appetite intersects with ambition and desire not just for Harry, but for his staff, his family, and the various women drawn to the store and the man. Zoe Tapper (Stage Beauty) is showgirl and temptress Ellen Love; Frances O’Connor (Madame Bovary) as is Harry's loyal wife, Rose; Grégory Fitoussi (Spiral) is the mercurial window designer extraordinaire, Henri Leclair; and Aisling Loftus (Case Histories) is the spunky shop girl Agnes Towler. Mr. Selfridge airs Sundays, March 31 through May 19, 2013 at 9pm ET (check local listings) on PBS' MASTERPIECE Classic.

EAGLE ARCHIVE By Kevin Dayhoff Posted on http://explorecarroll.com/community/3484/eaglearchive/ 10/04/09

One of the more interesting tidbits of history from October in yesteryear didn't take place in Carroll County, but had an impact upon our farming community — and what television looks like today.

It was Oct. 5, 1947, that the first televised presidential speech took place. President Harry S. Truman took to the airwaves to deliver an address to the nation.

The topic wasn't war, the economy or health care ... it was wheat.

What was so important about wheat? Glad you asked. Barely two years had passed since the devastating war in Europe had ended, and the continent was still in chaos.

I do not watch much of “Top 40” commercial television; however I have come to appreciate David Zurawik’s commentary on the contemporary pop-culture scene on the tube. It is intelligent and informative and keeps me up-to-date without having the dreadful experience of having to watch it.

About David Zurawik Click here for a larger image: http://twitpic.com/la8oe

I've been The Baltimore Sun's TV critic since 1989. My writings on TV and media have appeared in such publications as TV Guide, Esquire magazine and American Journalism Review.

I have a Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Maryland, College Park, and an M.A. in specialized reporting (on popular culture) from the University of Wisconsin.

I'm the author of The Jews of Prime Time (Brandeis University Press), a look at 50 years of Jewish characters and identity on network TV. I have also been with WYPR-FM (88.1) radio since 1994 and can be heard Thursday mornings at 7:30 doing a weekly "Take on Television" report.

The unblinking eye

“The unblinking eye.” May 28, 2009 by Kevin Dayhoff

Your brain is turning into mush…

“There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission. If we wish to make it louder, we will bring up the volume. If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper. We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical. We can roll the image, make it flutter. We can change the focus to a soft blur or sharpen it to crystal clarity. For the next hour, sit quietly and we will control all that you see and hear. We repeat: there is nothing wrong with your television set. You are about to participate in a great adventure. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to... The Outer Limits. — Opening narration – The Control Voice – 1960s

20070913 The president in HD

The president in HD

Thursday, Sept. 13, 2007

Thanks to David Wissing over at the Hedgehog Report – “President Bush Speech Notes/Open Thread” we learn that “tonight's Presidential address from the White House (was) broadcast for the first time in high definition television.”

Mr. Wissing credits TVNewser, “The President In HD” for the information, which notes, “Previous events, including this year's State of the Union address, were in HD but now that the White House is wired, the networks can carry the speech in HiDef.”

But quick, when was the first presidential speech on TV?

The History News Network, “How the White House Discovered Television” cites Christine Gibson in American Heritage : “…the first televised Presidential speech ever…” was “President Harry Truman's speech on October 5, 1947, urging Americans to save wheat…”

The speech and the circumstances are to be the subject of a future column that I am writing to coincide with the anniversary. I had come across the information before and then when I was at the Truman Key West “Little White House” this past February, I gained some more insight into the event. Anyone who reads Soundtrack, know by now how much I like movies and videos… and TV commercials…

Commercial TV these days leaves me flat. I’m not much on game shows, situational comedy, and certainly not a fan of reality TV.

But I hope to catch this program – “ABC I-Caught” - when it comes out – as I have so enjoyed much of YouTube… This seems like a pretty good match-up. We’ll see.

Network launches user-generated video show

By MICHAEL LEARMONTH Posted: Mon., May 28, 2007, 8:00pm PT

ABC is hoping to reinvent the newsmagazine for the YouTube generation with a show produced by ABC News but based on user-generated video.

Hourlong skein "i-Caught" will get a six-week run on the network starting Aug. 6 at 10pm on Mondays with an eye toward a midseason return if it performs as well as the network hopes.

Amateur video will form the basis of the show's segments, but ABC News correspondents will build news stories and features around video captured on cell phones or digicams and uploaded to a companion Web site.

Exec producer David Sloan said the show will take on a wide breadth of potential stories, including breaking news; celebrity journalism; investigations; and stories of politics, crime, Internet hoaxes or just the moments of everyday life.

"The watershed event that changed newsgathering was the London terror attack in 2005," Sloan said. "There were people on that subway who did not know if they would live or die, but they got out their cell phones and started shooting."
