A reader was recently in touch and asked: Where did R. Sargent Shriver live on Willis Street in Westminster Maryland when he was a child.

I have always thought that Mr. Sargent Shriver grew-up in the large brick home at the northeast corner of Willis and Center Street that is now divided into apartments…

For your enjoyment, pasted below are the links to several stories I have written about Mr. Shriver and his family, in the past in www.ExploreCarroll.com:

Shriver lived several childhood years in Carroll County

Robert Sargent Shriver, Jr.'s life of spreading goodwill internationally started here on Westminster's Willis Street.

Shriver, who was born Nov. 9, 1915, lived several childhood years on Willis Street in Westminster. He died Tuesday at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda.

Shriver was a member of the historic Shriver family in Carroll County, known as community, political and business leaders; whose heritage has been, in part, preserved by the Union Mills Homestead.

Shriver spoke fondly of his Carroll roots over the years. A Nov. 30, 1988 newspaper account described that Shriver once spoke to “an audience of about 520 gathered at Martin’s Westminster about the Carroll County” in which he was raised.

“We really didn’t have to recite the Pledge of Allegiance every day because we lived it and so did everyone in Westminster…  The things I’ve learned here (in Westminster) are more important than what I’ve learned in all the other places I’ve lived since.”

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eunice Kennedy, President John F. Kennedy’s sister, and the daughter of Joseph P. and Rose F. Kennedy.  They were married on May 23, 1953.  Mrs. Shriver was the founder and chair of Special Olympics International and the Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. Foundation.

The Shrivers had five children, one of whom, Maria Owings Shriver, is married to another well-known national personality, the former governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger… http://www.explorecarroll.com/news/5094/life-work-wisdom-sargent-shriver-began-westminster/

EAGLE ARCHIVE By Kevin Dayhoff Posted 8/16/09
On Aug. 11, people all across the nation mourned the death of Eunice Kennedy Shriver, who died at a hospital on Cape Cod surrounded by several generations of her large family. She was 88.

Inspired by her sister, Rosemary Kennedy, who was born mentally retarded, Shriver founded the Special Olympics in 1968 for persons with intellectual disabilities. Rosemary died in 2005.

As children, Rosemary and Eunice Kennedy are reported to have spent a great deal of time together swimming and sailing.

Mrs. Shriver became known around the world, but here in Carroll County she's remembered as the wife of R. Sargent Shriver, who was raised on Willis Street, in Westminster. The two married in 1953.

Sargent is a member of the historic Shriver family in Carroll County, known as community, political and business leaders. Their heritage has been preserved, in part, at the Union Mills Homestead.

Sargent Shriver at one time was President Kennedy's first director of the Peace Corps. He was also Sen. George McGovern's running mate in 1972, and ran for president himself in 1976.

By all accounts, Eunice and Sargent were very close, and she was an integral part of her husband's political career… http://www.explorecarroll.com/community/3295/shriver/

The life, work, and wisdom of Sargent Shriver began in Westminster

The life, work, and wisdom of Sargent Shriver began in Westminster by Kevin Dayhoff

Robert Sargent Shriver, Jr., of Westminster has died.

Shriver, who was born November 9, 1915, lived several childhood years on Willis Street in Westminster

Shriver was a member of the historic Shriver family in Carroll County, known as community, political and business leaders; whose heritage has been, in part, preserved by the Union Mills Homestead.

He was predeceased by his wife, Eunice Kennedy, President John F. Kennedy’s sister, and the daughter of Joseph P. and Rose F. Kennedy.  They were married on May 23, 1953.  Mrs. Shriver was the founder and chair of Special Olympics International and the Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. Foundation.

The Shrivers had five children, one of whom, Maria Owings Shriver, is married to another well-known national personality, the former governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Throughout the Shriver’s lifetime they received numerous awards for their work with children.  In 1962, when no one spoke in public about the mentally handicapped, the Shrivers broke the ice to highlight the plight of the handicapped.

It was then that Eunice Shriver “revealed her sister's condition to the nation during her brother's presidency in a 1962 article for the Saturday Evening Post,” according to a number of historical accounts of Shriver’s incredible life of service to our nation.

A year earlier, in 1961, President Kennedy “signed a bill the Shrivers championed to form the first President's Committee on Mental Retardation,” according to news accounts.

It was on November 18, 1988, the community was abuzz in anticipation of one of Carroll County’s most celebrated native sons, Robert Sargent Shriver, Jr. returning to town to help celebrate the “City of Westminster’s 150th Anniversary Dinner”.

The program for the 1988 event listed Shriver’s “unparalleled record of public service at the local, national, and international level: International lawyer … advocate for the poor…  He is a graduate of Yale University and Yale Law School and he served in the U.S. Navy for 5 years.

“He worked briefly as an editorial assistant at Newsweek Magazine before joining the staff of Ambassador Joseph P. Kennedy.”  Later he became one of the guiding forces of programs developed and supported by the Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. Foundation.

He served under President Kennedy, as the organizer and first Director of the Peace Corps and as the first Director of the Office of Economic Opportunity.

He “created VISTA, Head Start, Community Action, Foster Grandparents, Job Corps, Legal Services, Indian and Migrant Opportunities, and Neighborhood Health Services…”

He also served, as Special Assistant to President Lyndon Johnson and as ambassador to France.  He was nominated as Senator George McGovern's running mate in the presidential election of 1972 and ran for president himself in 1976.

Known as a devout Catholic, he remains the last - since 1976 - anti-abortion candidate to run for president or vice president for the Democratic Party.

In 1984 he was elected President of Special Olympics International, where he administered the operation and development of sports programs for individuals with mental retardation in every state… and 65 foreign nations.

Shriver also has a special connection with the burial of President John F. Kennedy at Arlington National Cemetery on November 25, 1963.  It was Shriver who suggested that Arlington Cemetery be the fallen president’s final resting place.

A November 30, 1988 newspaper account of the event described that Shriver spoke to “an audience of about 520 gathered at Martin’s Westminster about the Carroll County” in which he was raised.

“We really didn’t have to recite the Pledge of Allegiance every day because we lived it and so did everyone in Westminster…  The things I’ve learned here (in Westminster) are more important than what I’ve learned in all the other places I’ve lived since.”

Sadly, in recent years, Shriver suffered from Alzheimer’s disease.  His daughter, Maria Shriver Schwarzenegger, published a children’s book in 2004, “What's Happening to Grandpa?” to help explain Alzheimer's to children.

Sargent Shriver, who received the Presidential Medal of Freedom on August 8, 1994, once summed it best: “Nearly everybody in their life needs someone to help them.  I don't care whether you're the greatest self-made man; the fact is, somebody has helped you along the way.”

We can all be proud that Sargent Shriver found the roots for his lifetime commitment to public service in Westminster.  Our nation and the world have all greatly benefited from the life, wisdom, and work of this great man - who began his journey on Willis Street.

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger just began following me on Twitter. I took the opportunity to look up several columns that I have written in the past in which I have mentioned him in conjunction with the fact that his father-in-law, Sargent Shriver, grew-up in Westminster, MD.

I sent links to the above articles to him…

Eunice Kennedy Shriver remembered

Eunice Kennedy Shriver remembered for founding the Special Olympics

Sunday August 16, 2009 by Kevin Dayhoff

Some folks have asked where they may find my tribute to Eunice Kennedy Shriver, “Shriver remembered for Special Olympics and also for a connection to Carroll that appeared my Carroll Eagle Archives column on Sunday August 16, 2009

So I thought what I would do is post the long version which is unedited to meet word limit…

Last Tuesday, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, died at a hospital on Cape Cod surrounded by several generations of her large family. She was 88 years old.

Inspired by her sister, Rosemary Kennedy, who was born mentally retarded, Shriver founded the Special Olympics in 1968 for persons with intellectual disabilities.

As a child, Rosemary and Eunice Kennedy are reported to have spent a great deal of time together swimming and sailing. Rosemary died in 2005.

Shriver earned a sociology degree from Stanford University in 1943 and subsequently worked as a social worker at a prison for women in Alderson, W. Va, and the juvenile courts system in Chicago, before she took over the philanthropic foundation named after her brother, Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr., who had been killed fighting in WW II.

Throughout her lifetime received numerous awards for her work with children. In 1962, when no one spoke in public about the mentally handicapped, Shriver broke the ice and turned on the light on the plight of the handicapped.

It was then that she “revealed her sister's condition to the nation during her brother's presidency in a 1962 article for the Saturday Evening Post,” according to a number of historical accounts of Shriver’s incredible life of service to our nation.

A year earlier, in 1961, President Kennedy “signed a bill she championed to form the first President's Committee on Mental Retardation,” according to news accounts.

Shriver was the fifth of nine children in the family of Joseph P. Kennedy and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy. President John F. Kennedy and Sen. Robert F. Kennedy were two of her more famous brothers.

Many folks will also remember her as the mother of former NBC newswoman Maria Shriver; and the mother-in-law of California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

She married R. Sargent Shriver, from Willis Street in Westminster, in 1953. Sargent is a member of the historic Shriver family in Carroll County, known as community, political and business leaders; whose heritage has been, in part, preserved by the Union Mills Homestead.

He later became President Kennedy’s first director of the Peace Corps. He was also Sen. George McGovern's running mate in 1972, and ran for president himself in 1976. It is reported that the couple were very close and that she was an integral part of her husband’s political career.

However, it is through the Special Olympics that she will live on through the ages.

She was the daughter of a millionaire, the sister of a president and a U.S. Senator, and the mother-in-law of a governor; however she is best known for her tireless lifelong commitment to the mentally handicapped – and the Special Olympics.

Tovia Smith said it best on National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered:” Shriver “was born to one of America’s most powerful families but spent her life laboring for some of the least powerful.”
