Yesterday, 17feb2019, we attended the 7:45 a.m. service at Grace Lutheran Church so that we could also go to the breakfast at the Reese fire hall. We really enjoyed the breakfast and saw lots of neat people, including Commissioner Dick Weaver and his wife, Lila.

Last Sunday, July 2, 2017 at the 10:30 in the morning service at Grace Lutheran Church

Last Sunday, July 2, 2017 at the 10:30 in the morning service at  Grace Lutheran Church. Pastor Martha spoke to us about Matthew 10: 40-42 "Whoever welcomes you welcomes me … and whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one …"

She asked the question, "What does it mean in our world today to offer a cup of cold water? How do we provide a compassionate welcome to others?"

She finished her sermon by saying, "I leave you today with a challenge for this week: Look and listen for concrete examples of people offering hospitality and a cup of water to others.

"And I urge you to offer God's grace when you see your neighbor in need…"

This is why I go to church, to learn insights that I can use in the following week. Just saying.

Sunday church service at Grace Lutheran Church in Westminster

Sunday, Jan. 15, 2017 church service at Grace Lutheran Church in Westminster.

Today's gospel lesson comes from John 1:29-42. Pastor Martha talked with us about, "What are you seeking? Where will the path of discipleship lead us. What are you looking for? The path of discipleship is one of trust.."

Have a great Sunday. Have a great week.

Augur, Auguries, and Augurium

Augur, Auguries, and Augurium

"A rose by any other name would smell as sweet" William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet.

I recently misspelled the name of the Delaware-Maryland Synod vice president, John Auger, in the July 18, 2016 proposed church council minutes for Grace Lutheran Church.

I misspelled Synod Vice President “Auger” as “Augur,” and after the mistake was called to my attention, I immediately knew why.

Not to auger myself into the ground over this, but if you will recall your Old Testament or ancient civilizations classes in college; during the days of the Roman Empire, an “augur” was a high priest who practiced the augury or the taking of the augury. According to numerous sources, an augur “observed natural signs, especially the behavior of birds, interpreting these as an indication of divine approval or disapproval of a proposed action.”

Another cite notes, “His main role was the practice of augury, interpreting the will of the gods by studying the flight of birds: whether they are flying in groups or alone, what noises they make as they fly, direction of flight and what kind of birds they are. This was known as "taking the auspices." The ceremony and function of the augur was central to any major undertaking in Roman society—public or private—including matters of war, commerce, and religion.” For more information, read: “Augur, Augurium,” by William Smith, D.C.L., LL.D.: A Dictionary of Greek and Roman Antiquities, John Murray, London, 1875.

Of course today, the term “augur” is also used in decentralized economic game theory. The etiology of the concept of mathematical modeling in conflict analysis between rational political actors dates back to Friedrich Hayek's “The Use of Knowledge in Society,” first published in September 1945 and later included in the compilation, “Individualism and Economic Order.” Although Hayek’s concepts are now well-accepted in the analytical world, they were highly controversial in the early 1970s when the acting church secretary was in the business of trying college professors who found it highly annoying to be challenged. I had always argued that tulipmania, which peaked in March 1637, was a great example of a randomized commodity economic bubble which resulted from government interference in economic markets. Read the 1641 book by British journalist Charles Mackay, “Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds.”

When in a hole, stop digging. Stick a fork in me, I’m done.

** As for the image of The Augury between Romulus and Remus, according to Zach Jay on Pinterest, “This image is a cartoon that is depicting the Augury between Romulus and Remus, which would decide who is the rightful ruler of Rome. In the image, the Cartoonist is depicting Romulus spotting 12 birds and Remus spotting 6 birds, thus making Romulus the winner. This image is representing the story of Romulus winning the Augury, and thus believing that the Gods chose him as the rightful ruler of Rome.” Saved from art.famsf.org https://www.pinterest.com/zacharyjay5/romes-foundations/ https://www.pinterest.com/pin/538813542902190148/

Services at Grace Lutheran Church in Westminster Md are cancelled for Sunday February 22, 2015

According to an alert released by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS) early Saturday evening, February 21, 2015, “Hazardous road conditions exist due to winter storm - stay off the roads to allow the crews to clear them and to allow emergency providers to respond during this time. Check in on family, friends, and neighbors - especially the elderly or disabled. Keep devices charged to follow weather and local emergency information. Be cautious when shoveling snow to avoid over exertion.”

Out of an abundance of caution, Grace Lutheran Church at 21 Carroll Street in Westminster Md., cancelled all services and Christian education on both Saturday evening and on Sunday, February 22, 2015.

Please join us for worship this coming Wednesday at 7 p.m. with soup at 6! Stay safe!

Newly-renovated sanctuary at Grace Lutheran Church

On September 10, 2014, just before the September 14, 2014 rededication of the newly-renovated sanctuary at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church at 21 Carroll Street, Westminster, MD; Bishop Arthur Pease sent me a great picture of the sanctuary…

This quiz can help you find the right denomination

This quiz can help you find the right denomination

January 7, 2011

Churchmouse Campanologist

Ringing the bells for Christian traditions and getting our story out there. If we don’t, who will?

Many of us wonder why we’re dissatisfied with the church we attend.  For some, this might be because the clergy displace biblical teachings in favour of more worldly, including political, ones.  However, others might be attending church in a denomination which might not suit their theological beliefs.

So, how do we know what denomination might be correct for us?  Here’s a 24-question multiple-choice quiz that can help clarify which church might be best for you, the Christian Denomination Selector.  It’s free and you don’t need to register or leave an email address in order to discover the results.

OMG. My results indicate that I am 100 % Episcopal/Anglican Church and 72 % Evangelical Lutheran Church and Methodist Wesleyan. I guess this makes sense since my family are historically royalists - and I was raised in the United Methodist Church. Do not tell my family or my pastors, LOL. Does this mean I can’t be on the church council – or does it mean I get extra committee assignments? God Save the Queen.

Flyer, information and entry form for the Easter 5K Run to the Cross April 19, 2014 at Taylorsville United Methodist Church

Flyer, information and entry form for the Easter 5K Run to the Cross April 19, 2014 at Taylorsville United Methodist Church

According to information from the Taylorsville United Methodist Church website, the first ever ‘Run to the Cross’ will take place this Saturday in Taylorsville, Carroll County, Maryland.

If you are looking to get outside after a long-cold winter of being cooped-up inside, this is a great family event for everyone to enjoy – and celebrate spring and Easter. And oh, was it mentioned that there will also be great food available - pulled pork sandwiches. And all the proceeds go to several good causes…

The 5 K run will go from South Carroll High School to Taylorsville United Methodist Church on Saturday, April 19, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. (TUMC). (You can run this or walk this 5 K.)

This 5 K run will travel west on Route 26, cross Route 27 (with State Police help) and travel south on Route 27 to TUMC.

At the end of the race enjoy live music, pulled pork sandwiches (free for runners) and the final awards ceremony.

This run is a joint venture brought to you by TUMC and SCHS’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes. (FCA)

Proceeds will be given to both the FCA and the No More Malaria Campaign. (Every 60 seconds a child dies in Africa of Malaria. This campaign has already cut that number in half, we want to stop deaths from malaria.) Your entry fee will be tax deductible.

There are two ways to register: One is to download the run entry form, fill it out, and mail it back to TUMC along with a check. Please register by April 6th. The registration fee is $10 for students; $15 for SCHS Alum; and $20 for adults.

The second way to register is to click below. Make sure you have a credit card ready and you can register totally on line.

Note there is a 2-4 dollar increase to offset on-line costs.

While many Christian congregations have activities or services scheduled for Maundy Thursday or Good Friday, Easter Saturday is often a quiet day that slips by before the celebrations on Easter Sunday.

But Taylorsville United Methodist Church is hoping to start a new Easter Saturday tradition with the “Run to the Cross” 5K race.

“The whole point is you’re running to the cross the day before Easter and looking to see it’s empty, and the next day you’re going to see that the tombstone is rolled away,” said the Rev. Sarah Dorrance, pastor of Taylorsville UMC. “It’s very specific, rain or shine, on Easter Saturday.”

Dorrance said she got the idea of the church hosting a 5K race while talking to colleagues from other parts of the country. Read more here: http://www.carrollcountytimes.com/features/religion/running-to-the-cross/article_5a6ef6b4-c8c1-5fa0-a54d-5b161e2760f9.html
