Here are the winners of the 2014 US Military Photographer Awards Business Insider Australia… by JEREMY BENDER

“A panel of judges in Fort Meade, Maryland have made their selections for the 2014 Military Photographer awards.

“The judges have handed out awards to military photographers for their amazing work in ten different categories including Sports, Pictorial, and Combat Documentation (Operational). The judges have also named the overall best military photographer for 2014…”

This is an awesome set of photographs…

In photograph # 17, “A US Marine assigned to Echo Company 4th Reconnaissance Battalion rappels out of a CH-46E Sea Knight helicopter at Camp Upshur, Marine...”

Take a good look at this photograph. I trained, in part, at Camp Upshur in the summer of 1972. If you will notice how graceful the Marine jumps out of the helicopter. This Marine makes it look so easy – so polished – so graceful. A ballet in the air with a helicopter. It is beautiful. That, my friends, is not how I did it.

In the real world, the helicopter is so loud. The air rushes about so violently. If my memory serves me, in my case the helicopter was a Boeing CH-47 Chinook and-or a CH-46E Sea Knight – see picture #16...

At night it was easy to lose track of what was up and what was down - and just where is the ground anyway? You pray you find the landing zone before it finds you – with a very hard thud. I usually flailed-out of the aircraft and fell on my head. Over and over again.

Go here for all the pictures…. I also did number 7: I have no idea why I did not drown. I remember #6… I still do not like wind to this day.

Picture #10 is pretty powerful. And see if you can look at picture #14 and not get a tear in your eye.

Photograph #21 made me think of my grandfather, William Earl Wright, who served as a farrier in the cavalry during World War 1. (My dad served in the Navy during World War II – in the Pacific Theater …)

Photograph #24, ‘'The Army Chaplain' is pretty poignant.

All of the pictures are great. Please enjoy…

Maryland Senate Session Adjourned in Memory of Airman 1st Class Matthew Seidler

Maryland Senate Session Adjourned in Memory of Airman 1st Class Matthew Seidler - Marylanders for Joe Getty January 18, 2012

Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown, U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin and I attended the funeral yesterday for Airman 1st Class Matthew Seidler. In our official capacities, we offered condolences from all Maryland citizens to the family for their loss.

Today, at the end of the Senate legislative session, I moved that the Senate adjourn in memory of Airman 1st Class Seidler as a tribute to this Maryland Fallen Hero.

Seidler was 24-years-old and lived in Westminster where he graduated from Westminster High School in 2006.

When he joined the Air Force, he was accepted into the elite EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) unit. He was well-aware of the dangers he faced - the EOD personnel comprise only 1% of the Air Force but suffer 25% of the casualties.

On January 5, 2012, Seidler was part of a military convey of 27 vehicles engaged in hostile combat operations in the Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Earlier that day, his unit had defused two IEDs (improvised explosive devices) so that the convoy could continue its maneuvers. Tragically, his truck was hit by a third IED that killed Seidler and two other airmen.

The article by Kevin Dayhoff of the Carroll Eagle does an excellent job of capturing the outpouring of emotion and the honor and dignity given to this local hero during the funeral at Sol Levinson's & Bros. in Reisterstown. (click here)

Please keep the family of Airman 1st Class Matthew Seidler in your prayers.

Today in history was the last day of the Battle of Gettysburg

July 3, 1863

One of the best reads on the epic battle may be found here: The Gettysburg Campaign, on the ExplorePAhistory.com web site

The Battle of Gettysburg, fought over of the first three days of July in 1863, was one of the climactic events in American history.

Confederate General Robert E. Lee's bold offensive into northern territory resulted in the epic clash of two great armies with perhaps 175,000 soldiers, tens of thousands of horses and mules, more than 600 cannons, and hundreds of supply wagons and ambulances, all of which had traveled from Virginia to south-central Pennsylvania. Here, the two armies suffered a combined total of more than 51,000 men killed, wounded, and missing. Lee's army then walked back to Virginia where it continued to fight for almost two more years.

Monday, June 01, 2009

KABUL — The U.S. military in Afghanistan is launching a Facebook page, a YouTube site and feeds on Twitter as part of a new communications effort to reach readers who get their information on the Internet rather than in newspapers, officials said Monday.

The effort, which officials described as a way to counter Taliban propaganda, represents a sea change in how the military can communicate its message.

"There's an entire audience segment that seeks its news from alternative means outside traditional news sources, and we want to make sure we're engaging them as well," said Col. Greg Julian, the top U.S. spokesman in Afghanistan.

GI jumped into action with flip-flops, too, after surprise Taliban attack

WASHINGTON - Defense Secretary Robert Gates says American soldiers have more than their military might and training on their side in the war in Afghanistan. Some have pink underwear.

Gates told an audience in New York about Specialist Zachary Boyd, routed from sleep by enemy fire on his post in eastern Afghanistan.

"He immediately grabbed his rifle and rushed into a defensive position clad in his helmet, body armor, and pink boxer shorts that said 'I Love New York,'" Gates said Thursday night.

[…]

"Any soldier who goes into battle against the Taliban in pink boxers and flip-flops has a special kind of courage," Gates said, adding that Boyd may have hit on a new kind of psychological warfare. "I can only wonder about the impact on the Taliban.

Jail, money issues ruin chance at security access, students told

BALTIMORE - Kelsey Volkmann, The Examiner 2007-11-27

Students have yet another reason to stay out of debt, avoid arrests and earn good grades.

They need clean financial, police and school records if they hope to earn the security clearances required for many of the military-related jobs coming to Maryland in the next few years as part of Base Realignment and Closure.

[…]

State education officials have met with leaders from school systems across the state to create a syllabus for a consumer literacy course called Personal Resource Management. The class, which would launch statewide next school year, would teach students about financial planning and how to maintain good credit.

Some school systems, including Carroll County, already require students to complete a financial literacy class to graduate high school.

The state also plans to launch a Web site next year that will give parents and students tips on how to attain security clearances.

20070711 "90 seconds"

Military Army United States Military Academy (USMA) West Point

"90 Seconds"

July 11th, 2007

My Tentacle column is up on the web site.

Writing this column was rather poignant for me…

The jarring juxtaposition of visiting the United States Military Academy at West Point and seeing the dedication and sense of service and sacrifice on the hallowed grounds and then to read, on the same day, the sanctimonious twaddle of the New York Times editorial last Sunday, “The Road Home” was enough to make your head spin and spew pea soup…

I had wanted to write a simple “travelogue” of West Point. I just wanted to attempt to capture some of the history, tradition, and grandeur of the storied institution that dates back to 1802 but I was so taken aback by reading the New York Times editorial in the context of just having toured the grounds, that my keyboard was just not having it.

Especially since there is a profound disconnect in reading about the successes, efforts and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform in harms way from the military blogs and what is being reported in the mainstream media.

"90 Seconds" by Kevin E. Dayhoff, July 11, 2007

It was nothing short of cruel irony that I happened to be on a guided tour of the United States Military Academy at West Point on the very day The New York Times editorialized for the United States to unconditionally surrender in Iraq. It was this past Sunday.

The editorial, "The Road Home," opened with this: "It is time for the United States to leave Iraq, without any more delay than the Pentagon needs to organize an orderly exit."

We live in an era where irony rules, the truth is illusory, paradox pervades and the 90-second difference between reality and perception continues to become "curiouser and curiouser."

To witness the impressive grandeur of West Point and the omnipresent homage to past graduates who have fought for our way of life and the freedoms we have come to take for granted - just days after the 4th of July - and then to read the New York Times, just 90 seconds after leaving the post, was mind boggling.

20070228 Reconnecting a friend to Fred Magsamen

Web site helps reconnect a friend to Fred Magsamen

February 28th, 2007 – Posted March 3rd, 2007

Last Wednesday’s Westminster Eagle has a letter to the editor about a column I wrote for the Westminster Eagle – and later a blog post I wrote on the Winchester Report on May 26th, 2006: "On Memorial Day, Freddy Magsamen is No. 11 in our hearts."

Web site helps reconnect a friend to Fred Magsamen

I just blundered (literally) across a story about Fred Magsamen that Kevin Dayhoff wrote for The Westminster Eagle way back in May 2006. ("On Memorial Day, Freddy Magsamen is No. 1 in our hearts," May 26, 2006.)

His story brought tears to my eyes. I am the Ken Van Arsdel whom he quoted in the article.

I can't tell you how much the article means to me. I counted Fred as a good friend É best friend É although I knew him for only a few short months.

The intensity of life as a soldier in Recon Company, CCN, seemed to distill daily experiences into moments that were both potent and poignant. Great friendships were formed quickly in the maelstrom of the events we lived. Sadly, they were often brought up short, as the odds caught up with us.

Mr. Dayhoff's article told me more about Fred than I ever knew, and I miss him all the more for it. Thank you for remembering him, and for sharing those memories with the world.

The Internet is a wonderful thing; without it I would never have seen your article.

Or would I? It is an experience like this that makes one question whether "divine intervention" or "karma" are more than just pop culture concepts.

Ken Van Arsdel

San Andreas, Calif.

(Editor's Note: The Magsamen article and others are available on our Web site, at http://www.thewestminstereagle.com/.)
