Presidential election politics are over for 2012 (well, sort of), but we can still recall local history related to our nation's chief executives. For instance, the Nov. 15, 1964, edition of the Baltimore Sun's Sunday Magazine carried a story by Philip Myers with the headline, "I Remember … Theodore Roosevelt in Westminster."

Remembering the most wonderful time of year for 'Stanta' Claus

Remembering the most wonderful time of year for 'Stanta' Claus

Remembering the most wonderful time of year for 'Stanta' Claus By Kevin Dayhoff, November 20, 2012 Planning for Christmas in Westminster is almost as much a cherished tradition as the holiday itself… http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/community/ph-ce-remembering-stan-1118-20121119,0,4483663.story

But for many, Christmas 2012 will not quite be the same without Stan Ruchlewicz, the City of Westminster's administrator of economic development and Main Street manager, who died of a heart attack on June 5 at age 56.

During the holiday season, Ruchlewicz was a perennial fixture at the Locust Lane Santa House, serving as "Stanta" Claus to the delight of children and parents alike.

But he was also a driving force behind many of the events that make up the annual Miracle on Main Street activities in Westminster: the parade, the tree lighting and other special events that bring people, businesses and organizations together… http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/community/ph-ce-remembering-stan-1118-20121119,0,4483663.story

In Carroll County, voters warm up to a cool election day

Westminster precinct reports heavy, and steady, turnout

By Kevin Dayhoff, November 6, 2012

It was almost anti-climactic at the polls in Westminster on Tuesday afternoon.

After a year of robo-calls, tons of campaign literature, debates and nonstop news coverage, election day came to Carroll County — and the turnout was heavy and steady.

Just after 4 p.m., as temperatures dropped, there were plenty of hardy campaign workers at the polls at Westminster Elementary School. Joy Fisher and Erin Snell and Jennifer and Molly Harvilak were busy greeting voters and handing out literature in support of Question 6, the Civil Marriage Protection Act.

"Been here since the morning — and we're cold," Fisher said in between shivers… http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/ph-ce-election-day-1106-20121106,0,1592306.story

Area artists paint the town during book signing

Area artists paint the town during book signing

Area artists set up easels and painted in the cold morning air Saturday as throngs of best-selling author Nora Roberts’ fans lined up for a noon book signing.

Promotions bill Roberts’ “Inn BoonsBoro” trilogy as being “inspired by the inn (she) owns and the town she loves.” The inn referenced is the boutique-style bed-and-breakfast hotel of the same name as the trilogy on the square in Boonsboro. Roberts updated the property in 2008 with a $3 million renovation. ... http://www.herald-mail.com/news/hm-area-artists-paint-the-town-during-book-signing-20121103%2C0%2C2685631.story

Pen and ink artist Stan Gilmore to exhibit at Off Track Art

Please join us at Off Track Art on November 2, 2012 at 5:30 in the evening for a reception for our next guest artist, Stanley F. Gilmore, Jr.

Mr. Gilmore specializes in pen and ink drawings of various buildings and structures found in and around Carroll County. He enjoys this medium as it suits the character and structure of many historic buildings.

The drawings are all limited and numbered edition prints with each subject not just rendered in ink, but many are hand colored with watercolors as well. A few different subjects other than Carroll County scenes will be on exhibit and for sale as well.

In addition, Mr. Gilmore has also illustrated two children’s books for Old Line Publishing, found at Old Line Publishing.com, Amazon.com, and Barnes & Noble.com.

One book is “The Little Match Girl,” by Hans Christian Anderson, and the other is “The Birth of Christ,” as found in the gospel of Luke. These two books will be available for purchase and signing at the opening of his art show on November 2, 2012.

Mr. Gilmore is now a retired art teacher who taught elementary, middle school, and high school art for 38 years in various schools in the county.

He is presently teaching art at the Carroll Lutheran School K - 8, one day a week, and varied drawing classes in the evenings at the Carroll Community College in their Continuing Education Program.

He is a graduate of The Maryland Institute College of Art with a BFA in Art Education, 1970, and Towson University with a MS degree in Instructional Technology, 2000.

“Off Track Art” is an artists’ collective and gallery located in the historic Liberty Building at 11 Liberty Street – next to the railroad tracks, off of the Sentinel parking lot at the corner of West Main St and MD 27-Liberty St - in downtown Westminster, Maryland.

For almost 4-years, the ten partners in the coop have been dedicated to advancing the arts in Westminster as well as the careers, ideas, and artistic visions of its members.

The coop partners include, Kevin Dayhoff, Gail Elwell, Linda Van Hart, Judy Goodyear, Charlotte Laslo, Amanda Beck Mauck, Joyce Schaum, Carolyn Seabolt, Robert Waddell, and Gordon Wickes.

After discussions and organizational meetings in December 2008, Off Track opened its doors in January 2009 and had its grand opening on Feb. 13th, 2009.

Off Track Art’s hours are: Wednesday through Friday, 12 – 6 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m to 5 p.m.
