Intolerance (1916) Full HD Movie

D. W. Griffith’s classic “Intolerance,” was released on Sept. 5, 1916.

Compiled by Kevin Dayhoff September 12-15, 2023.

I was originally researching the life and accomplishments of Bessie Love, an early silent film star who was born September 10, 1898. One of her early movies was “Intolerance:” released Sept. 5, 1916, "Intolerance is a 1916 epic silent film directed by D. W. Griffith and considered one of the great masterpieces of the Silent Era. It is perhaps one of the top ten movies ever made.

Bessie Love appeared in the movie along with the likes of Lilian Gish, Vera Lewis, Ralph Lewis, Mae Marsh, Robert Harron, Constance Talmadge, Josephine Crowell, Margery Wilson, Frank Bennett, Elmer Clifton, Miriam Cooper, and Alfred Paget.

The three-and-a-half hour epic intercuts four parallel storylines, each separated by several centuries: (1) a contemporary melodrama of crime and redemption, (2) a Judean story: Christ's mission and death, (3) a French story: the events surrounding the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre of 1572, and (4) a Babylonian story: the fall of the Babylonian Empire to Persia in 539 BC. Each story had its own distinctive color tint in the original print. The scenes are linked by shots of a figure representing Eternal Motherhood, rocking a cradle."

Bessie Love played the role of ‘The Bride,’ in the ‘Wedding at Cana’ scene in Intolerance. It was a complex scene in which Christ attends the wedding at Cana with Howard Gaye as Christ, and with Bessie Love and George Walsh as the bride and groom. Bessie Love was born on September 10, 1898. She was discovered in 1915 when she began working in silent pictures directed by D.W. Griffith. Following her small role in ‘Intolerance’, Love gained her first prominent role in ‘The Flying Torpedo’ in 1916.

One media source explained, “In 1929, when sound made its way to films, Love was one of the few actors who found the transition from silent films to early talkies smooth. She won an Academy Award nomination for her stellar performance in ‘The Broadway Melody’. She moved to Britain in 1935 where she resumed her acting career…” Her acting career ended in 1983.

An interesting sidenote is that she worked for the American red Cross during World War II in England.

According to a story in Los Angeles Times at the time of her death in London England on April 26, 1986 at the age of 88, “She was born Juanita Horton in Midland, Tex., the daughter of an itinerant bartender father who moved his family through Arizona, New Mexico and finally to Los Angeles, where his 16-year-old daughter talked her way onto the set of ‘Intolerance.’”

Throughout her career she Bessie Love made 141 films, including the Oscar-nominated Broadway Melody (1929), making appearances in The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone (1961),  Isadora (1968), Sunday Bloody Sunday (1971), Ragtime (1981), Reds (1981) and The Hunger (1983). She wrote her autobiography, From Hollywood with Love, in 1977.

The Los Angeles Times reported, “She was cast in a series of parts she once described as “sunbonnet girl next door” in “Nina the Flower Girl,” “The Great Adventure,” “The Yankee Princess,” “Human Wreckage” and three dozen more before becoming a self-professed “sequined and spangled showgirl” in “The Broadway Melody.” That 1928 production was the first talking picture ventured by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The film, also believed the industry’s first sound musical, brought her an Academy Award nomination.”

This information has been compiled and assembled from multiple documented and undocumented sources over many years – all of which I have been very careful to cite and no claim to original authorship is either claimed or implied.

Morgan Wade - Psychopath (Official Audio)

#amwriting to Morgan Wade – According to ‘About the Artist’ retrieved August 24, 2023 on Spotify, “Most artists don't top Rolling Stone's Best Country Albums of the year list with their debut album. But most artists aren't Morgan Wade, who earned the top spot with her scathingly honest and raw 2021 LP Reckless.

“While Reckless, and its Top 30 lead single "Wilder Days," busted down the doors and introduced Wade as a once-in-a- generation songwriter, she now readies her anticipated follow-up project, Psychopath, arriving Aug. 25.

An astounding 13-track LP, Psychopath most excitingly finds Wade peeling back layers of her psyche like never before. Wade has been no stranger to the road throughout the first quarter of 2023 on her headlining NO SIGNS OF SLOWING DOWN TOUR, which sold out 35 shows for more than 40,000 tickets sold.

A Virginia native, Wade has broken away from the pack to become one of country music's most compelling new voices. Possessed with a raw and unflinching voice anchored by a perfect tinge of twang; the rare ability to pen honest portraits of some of life's most precious and painful and unpredictable moments; and an onstage vulnerability that so seamlessly breaks down the wall between fan and artist, Wade has quickly made her mark on the country music scene- and the music world at large-with nominations for ACM New Female Artist of the Year, Americana Music Association Emerging Act of the Year, and CMT Breakthrough Female Video of the Year…

There is a good article on her in People magazine here: ‘Who Is Morgan Wade? All About the Country Musician - Here's everything to know about Morgan Wade, from her musical rise to her Grand Ole Opry debut, By Skyler Caruso  Updated on August 11, 2023 https://people.com/morgan-wade-everything-to-know-7556954#:~:text=Among%20the%20most%20unique%20aspects,her%20emotions%20into%20a%20song.

Los Amigos Mexican Restaurant, 205 Frederick Rd, Thurmont, MD

The restaurant is well lit and fun - nicely decorated and obviously well-maintained. The folks that work there obviously  like the restaurant. The staff was very welcoming and friendly. The food was great with great prices, and a large parking lot – right off Rte 15. We look forward to returning soon.

Earlier Caroline had played in a Westminster Municipal Band concert in the Thurmont Memorial Park, just off 116 East Main Street, Thurmont, MD 21788, at the Thurmont Trolley Park. The band concert was great – and enjoyed by many folks from around town who came out on a beautiful Sunday evening to enjoy the music.

We really liked the 1.3-acre park. It was well maintained and picturesque. It is obvious that Thurmont loves the park – and that folks enjoy it. The park comes complete with a bubbling stream that runs through the park – not far from a memorial pavilion that honors local folks who have served in the military and fought in a nation’s wars to maintain the freedoms and quality of life we enjoy. It was a great evening, and we look forward to returning to Thurmont.

The Thurmont Trolley Park. We were intrigued about the Trolley Trail Park. According to the Thurmont website, “The Thurmont Trolley Trail is a .8 mile trail installed over the former trolley tracks that serviced Thurmont in the 1900’s.

“The Town of Thurmont also acquired and displays one of the trolley cars that was once utilized in Thurmont’s history. The building that was once used to house all the electrical components that operated the trolley sits at the beginning of the trail on East Main Street.

“The Town of Thurmont and the Thurmont Lions Club has installed murals on the building depicting the history of Thurmont...

“From 1908 to 1954, Thurmont was the "end of the line" for the trolley system that traveled from Frederick to Thurmont. During its hay day in the 1920's, the Hagerstown and Frederick Railway (H &F) carried 3.8 million people per year.

“However, with great strides in the world of transportation, the demands for the trolley dwindled and the H&F made its final trip to Thurmont in 1954 and the tracks were removed. The existing trail begins at the historical trolley car and promotes a glimpse at Thurmont’s historical transportation services. Today, the trail is heavily used by residents and visitors for hiking, jogging, biking, and enjoying nature.”

It was a great evening, and we look forward to returning to Thurmont. https://goo.gl/maps/o1SsDQQoxCfWduqf9

Nolly Gelsinger: Our artists’ cooperative Off Track Art was incorporated in 2009 by a great field of local energetic artists.

For the month of July, Off Track Art is checking in with some of our former partners who spent time with us in the recent (and not so recent!) past.

We refer to each one as a “Partner Emeritus” to honor their status. They are all dear to us and we appreciate how these partners helped to pave the way for the continued success of Off Track Art.

Specifically, we wanted to see how some of our former partners, who are involved in their former or new communities, are now using their outstanding creativity as their lives have evolved in additional directions.

We caught up with seven of them-their names may be familiar to you- and asked them to update their biography with us, bring any artwork they have been doing, display it on our lobby walls, and offer it for sale for the month of July.

The show runs from Friday June 30 until Sunday, July 30. Our visiting artists are: Sherrill Cooper, Kevin Dayhoff, Gail Elwell, Sarah Gawens, Thomas Sterner, Robert Waddell, and Pamela Zappardino!

One of my favorite pictures of Rev. Erin Snell

One of my favorite pictures of Rev. Erin Snell, in action, working to make a difference in our community.

On Wednesday evening, December 21, 2022 Caroline and I attended the annual Blues Christmas and Community Homeless Memorial Service at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Westminster. The service will be the topic of the article I an writing for this weekend in the Carroll County Times. During the service I was reminded of one of my favorite pictures of Rev. Erin Snell.

The other day Erin had reposted a St. Paul's United Church of Christ post with a picture of candles on her page. The caption for the picture explained: “We will have our annual BLUES CHRISTMAS AND COMMUNITY HOMELESS MEMORIAL SERVICE on Wednesday, December 21 (Winter Solstice) at 7:00pm.

“This service is for people struggling with the challenges of the holidays for whatever reason. And, with the help of various community agencies and local law enforcement, we will remember homeless people who have died this past year.

“This service will be live in the Sanctuary and available on Zoom at the usual Sunday worship Zoom link.

“Very special thanks to Henry Reiff who has served as Music Director for this service since we started it together many years ago.” https://www.facebook.com/StPaulsUCCWestminster/posts/pfbid02ZUj2cv3kwgnnz7MKTAZ1TPrfB83dcSvBWJEgbcmmGNgYB7TexYZrVsT8cTpYgz7wl

Toby Keith - Don't Let the Old Man In

Don't Let the Old Man In
Song by Toby Keith

Don't let the old man inI wanna leave this aloneCan't leave it up to himHe's knocking on my door
And I knew all of my lifeThat someday it would endGet up and go outsideDon't let the old man in
Many moons I have livedMy body's weathered and wornAsk yourself how would you beIf you didn't know the day you were born
Try to love on your wifeAnd stay close to your friendsToast each sundown with wineDon't let the old man in
Many moons I have livedMy body's weathered and wornAsk yourself how would you beIf you didn't know the day you were born
When he rides up on his horseAnd you feel that cold bitter windLook out your window and smileDon't let the old man in
Look out your window and smileDon't let the old man in

Early morning fire claims the life of a shopkeeper. One firefighter hospitalized.

Early morning fire claims the life of a shopkeeper. One firefighter hospitalized.

By Westminster Fire Department PIO and Chaplain Kevin Dayhoff

Westminster Md., Monday, December 12, 2022 - - Over 100 firefighters from throughout Carroll County, in addition to firefighter units from Frederick and Baltimore County and Adams and York County Pa., responded to an early morning fire in the unit block of West Main Street in Westminster.

As a result of the fire, a shopkeeper, Bradley White, 55, the owner of White’s Bicycles was found dead, and one firefighter was taken to Carroll Hospital for treatment. “The severity of those injuries was not known as of Monday afternoon,” according to Westminster Fire Department public information officer Robin Stansbury

According to Westminster Mayor Dr. Mona Becker, “The bicycle shop has been a fixture of Main Street for several decades. The fire is a real tragedy.”

Tony Chiavacci, Westminster Common Councilmember and Public Safety Chair agreed, “The fire – it’s devastating, just heartbreaking, Brad White was a phenomenal guy. Everybody in the community knows him.”

This is the second fire fatality to have occurred in Carroll County in recent weeks. On Sunday afternoon, November 27, 2022, Ronald Joy, 62, a Pleasant Valley man died in a fire in the 2700 block of Littlestown Pike just north of Westminster. https://dayhoffwestminster.blogspot.com/2022/11/fatal-carroll-county-house-fire-nov-28.html

A number of serious fires have occurred in Carroll County this fall that have required the response of a large number of firefighters, first responders and equipment. Approximately 80 firefighters and 25 pieces of firefighting equipment from Carroll, Baltimore, and Frederick county fire departments responded to a building fire at the Westminster Wakefield Valley Park late Thursday morning, November 17, 2022 - https://www.facebook.com/kevindayhoff/posts/pfbid02JJuiAe7qDcHroqcjAdaFtfkMs4tihUk7m2vp9JtAk8FaxG4y9qJ3wNBAPSauv7B2l

Upon arrival, the Westminster Fire Department found fire showing from the roof line of the historic three-story 1767 Durbin House - https://dayhoffwestminster.blogspot.com/2022/12/stubborn-fire-damages-historic.html

The first call for the report of a building fire in the historic downtown Westminster business district, came in to the Emergency Communications Center at 5:18 a.m. Upon arrival units from New Windsor, Reese and Westminster fire departments found fire and heavy smoke evident within the building - coming from White’s bicycle shop, according to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Westminster responded quickly to the scene because the rear of the bicycle shop is adjacent to the Westminster fire station at 28 John Street. Westminster immediately began assisting with evacuating residents from the ten apartments above the business on the 2nd and 3rd floor of the building.

Firefighters from Reese and New Windsor with assistance from Pleasant Valley immediately began an interior fire suppression attack from the front the building – on West Main Street. Additional units responded from Gamber and surrounding fire companies to assist.

“Firefighters continued their search,” according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal, (OSFM) “and subsequently located … White inside. Firefighters pulled him from the building, and EMS began CPR. He was transported to Carroll Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.”

The sprinklers that had been retroactively installed a number of years ago in the historic building that dates back to 1885, were activated by the fire.

According to the OSFM deputy fire marshals, “along with the Westminster Police Department, have been working throughout the morning to determine the cause of the fire. Deputy State Fire Marshals have preliminarily determined the fire originated within the office of the bike shop.

“During their investigation, they discovered evidence White was living inside the business. And while the building was equipped with an automated fire sprinkler system, it was determined the office had no sprinkler coverage.

“Investigators have concluded once the fire spread from the office, the fire was extinguished by fire sprinklers, allowing the 30 tenants above the bicycle shop and the adjoining apartments above Johansson's Dining House to escape safely, and no injuries were reported," said the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office. “The sprinklers saved lives,” according to Westminster Fire Department Chief Jeff Leppert.

“Most of the tenants are displaced and will be assisted by the Red Cross,” said the OSFM. “Carroll County Building and Fire inspectors are assisting OSFM Fire Safety Inspectors in addressing non-related fire and safety code issues in both buildings. A joint investigation between the Office of the State Fire Marshal and the local police agency is a standard operating procedure for a fatal fire.”

The fire was declared under control at 6:34, according to Stansbury. The fire remains under investigation. Most of the tenants that were displaced from their apartments as a result of the fire are being assisted by the Red Cross, according to Stansbury and Valerie D. Hawkins, Carroll County Emergency Management Manager.

“The Westminster Fire Department would like to thank Chick-fil-A and BJ's Wholesale Club  for donating food following the fire this morning. Their generosity was greatly appreciated by all,” according to Bridget Weishaar, the Westminster Fire Department Recruitment & Retention Coordinator.

The Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office, Westminster Firefighter and PIO Robin Stansbury, the Westminster Police Department, Mike Robinson, the Carroll County Director of Fire and EMS, Valerie D. Hawkins, Carroll County Emergency Management Manager, and Tony Chiavacci, Westminster Common Councilmember and Public Safety Chair, assisted in putting this report together.
